Bad Greenhouse Moment
by metalfan- 9 replies
Our first "real" winter weather...it's 33F at the moment. Saturday morning at about 3am a major severe weather cell blew through as the cold front approached and knocked out our power. We had three trees fall down (ugh, chainsaw time again) It was about 65F at the time, so no big, but it was supposed to drop to 29F this morning. Fortunately the power company got the power going PDQ and so at the moment everything in the greenhouse is a toasty 50 or so. I was really worried. We have never lost power before when it was forecast to be COLD,only during the summer storms when it really doesn't matter. I have a small backup generator I can use to heat the greenhouse w…

Anyone have a guess? This is a nice big blue Sabal that is at least 15-20 years old and only has a few feet of trunk... very slow. It is growing here in SW Florida.

I germinated some of our home grown Licuala Grandis seeds and I noticed that the leaf tips of my seedlings are suddely turning brown. Whats happening here and what should I do. The potting medium is compost and a lot of Charcoaled rice husk so its a very freely draining medium.

Greenhouse II 1 2
by MattyB- 52 replies

Hi guys and gals! Just finished the greenhouse at the new place and I thought I'd share some pics I took throughout the process. First is a shot looking south into a large existing octagonal shed which I decided to make into my growing area. First thing I did is build an interior wall, splitting the 20 foot diameter shed into two halves. The south side would be the greenhouse and the north side would remain a utility shed. Let's take a break for the coolest lizard I've ever seen!

Getting ready for winter (1 of 3)
by htownpalmer- 12 replies

I live in Houston. For 42 weeks a year, it's a great place to grow palms. It's just those other 10 weeks when it gets dicey. In preparation for the upcoming cold nights in January & February, I prepared a shelter for some of the palms not acclimated to Houston's winters, including: * dypsis decaryi * archontophoenix cunninghama * ptychosperma elegans * Arenga pinnata and * Ravenala madagascariensis Basically, I had a frost cloth sewn onto a tarp and hung the thing from the side of my house, connecting it to my fence. This side is south facing, so it should offer as much protection as I can get from the colder winds coming from the north. I'm alread…

Pot Planting Method
by Morabeza- 7 replies
Hello everyone, I joined the Southern CA chapter of the IPS in 1997 (ish?) and at the time there were articles in the journal and talk at meetings extolling the advantages of planting palm species that either have sensitive roots or are marginal with regards to cold hardiness to be planted, pot and all, directly into the ground. It seemed that many members had success at the time, but my participation in the group ended after successive moves to Portugal in 1998 and then Cape Verde Islands in 1999. I was back in CA for a while but never got a sense of how these palms that many were planting using the "pot-planting" method ended up faring in the long run. D…

Just felt like snapping a few pics this morning. Hope you enjoy. Dypsis sp. 'Orange Crush'. It had filled out a 2 gallon nicely so I potted it up into a 5 gallon last night. Maybe it'll be ready to plant by spring. I like the twising action.

Bugs
by Surf Guy- 6 replies

I was checking out my palms in the back when I got home from work and noticed these black spots on my Pritchardia. They look like some type of bugs. The plant is in the ground and ants seem to like this stuff. They arte on the new spear and go down oinside the plant. I would take pictures but I don't have the equipment to take a closeup of something this small. Is this harmful? Should I be worried and take immediate action? If so, what do I use to kill it? I then noticed it on some of my other palms as well. What should I do? Mike

2007 frond production
by TonyDFW- 7 replies
A cold norther is blowing in and it looks like it is going to be bringing in our first frost. With the end of the growing season and year upon us I counted up the new fronds produced from some of my rarer cold hardy palms. My 4 year old Trachycarpus princeps produced 6 fronds this growing season where we had over 50 inches of rain this wet year. Normal amount is 34 inches. Notice 2007 leaves are much larger than previous ones. Trachycarpus latisectus I've had this palm for 10 years. All winters when the temps fall below 22°F. the plant defoliates. This year it produced 6 fronds during the growing season. Brahea moorei. This 4 year plant produced 6 fronds. All…

Necrotic Calamus
by Jason in Orlando- 0 replies
I purchased a one gallon Calamus tetradactylus last spring. It was a healthy plant. Since I have had it, all leaves have emerged chlorotic to necrotic and growth has been slow (don't know how fast it grows to begin with though...). Below are pictures of the plant. Any ideas? I has been kept in shade, watered regularly, and fertilized with a granular slow release formula with micros. The leaves originally on the plant when I purchased it have remained green and healthy looking. Any help would be appreciated. Jason

Brahea armata
by chris.oz- 25 replies
- 5.6k views
I have a Brahea armata groing in a raised bed, in the sun for 4-6 hours per day. It grows from October to April and puts out one leaf per month during that period. This makes it much faster than other palms I have growing in shady places in my garden and it grows leaves at about the same rate as my Syagrus. It also holds lots more leaves than many palms I have growing. Is there anyone out there who calls this "slow"

Stupidly, I planted these two species too close to other palms last summer. Next spring I plan on transplanting them to areas where they will have more space. Are the Beccariophoenix and the B. capitata easy trans-planters?

Seeds
by freakypalmguy- 5 replies

I was just out looking at some of my Butia seeds and decided to crack a few open to see what was inside. They all had a pungent odor to them (B. paraguayensis, eriospathe, and archeri). Does this mean they are going bad? Or is it normal? I have had them on heat and I hope I have not cooked them. When I cracked them open they all looked like a coconut inside, some had a void and others had a mushy white stuff in the middle. I assume the ones with voids are the non viable seed in the batch. Any know for sure, Matt

Here in Louisiana, weeds are a big problem. I was just reading about a preemergent product called Snapshot and wondering whether it was safe, we I realized that you guys would know the answers. What chemicals, pre and post emergents, have you been succesful with that have not harmed your palms and other ornamentals plants?
