THE FUTURE, 50 to 100 YEARS
by PalmGuyWC- 29 replies
- 1.9k views
The "oldest palm in your garden" thread set me to thinking. Rather than thinking of the oldest palm in our garden, maybe we should think of the future and what species has the best chance of survival. Most of us think of climate change, extreams of temperatures, droughts, floods, etc., but most likely for those of us with private property, probably the most limiting factor will be our life spans, and what happens to our palm gardens when we are gone. Will your kids or your heirs preserve your palm collection? Probably not. The property will most likely be sold, and who will care or look after the palms then? Who knows what the political situation will be many years dow…

Greetings from Ruskin, Florida

Howdyall: Palm fever has taken a serious turn for the worse. So far, I've seen enough Sabal palmetto to remember for the rest of my days, both seedlings and mature specimens, plus enough Serenoas to cure the swollen prostates of a billiion old men. Well, maybe a bit of hype, but you get the idea. My hands are shaking as I'm getting over my web withdrawal. It's been a long while since I've been this long without logging onto the board . . .. . I've got only an hour, so this has to be good, instead of the usual tarrying . . . I'm in the regional library here on the outskirts, of Ruskin, which is on the eastern edge of Tampa Bay, south of Tampa and north of …

3 year old S.mexicana seedling setting seed.

Here a pic of two 3-4 year old seedlings flowering. I have about 17 others that are normal and fed same fertilizer, but these ones just tweaked out. These pics are a little old and the more advanced flowering one set a few seeds. <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Tropicallvr/palms/10-16-2007-35.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Outdoor lighting for palms

I have been thinking about adding some accent lighting to my front landscape bed. I have seen these solar powered spotlights/flood lights at the box stores. Anyone have any experience working with these? Are they even bright enough to shine up a palm? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Why do some palms want out of their containers?
by www.dadluvsu.com- 10 replies
I've heard people mention this before but had never experienced it... Take a look at the Teddy Bear... Why is it trying to get out of it's pot? Super strong roots? Time to repot? It's in a 5G pot... Surely there is room for more root growth before potting up... Sould I shake some of the soil out of the roots and repot in the same container but just straighten her up when I do it? I've got questions... Whose got answers?

cat palm in zone 9?
by southlatropical- 21 replies
- 7.1k views
First post here. I live in south Louisiana zone 9. I bought a 5 1/2 foot cat palm for 5 bucks at HD. I had been wanting to try one outside to see if they would make it here. It is planted against a wall on the protected side of the house with a live oak canopy partially overhead. We had one frost so far this year. The shaded area where I planted the cat palm saw no frost at all that morning. We had several days of +80F this past week, but now there is another frost comming tomorrow night (32F is the forcast). Would it help or hurt to water it the evening before the frost? And, does this palm have a chance of making it here? I do plan on wrapping with something tomorrow…

Anyone following this story? "Foja mountains rainforest in eastern Papua province in a June expedition, said U.S.-based Conservation International, which organized the trip along with the Indonesian Institute of Science." "A 2006 expedition to the same stretch of jungle — dubbed by Conservation International as a "Lost World" because until then humans had rarely visited it — unearthed scores of exotic new species of palms, butterflies and palms." From another article "Plants A total area of about one million hectares of pristine, ancient, tropical, humid forest containing at least 550 plants species, many previously unknown and including five new species…

Thermocube

I can't locate the original post, but a member mentioned this product in a thread some time ago. Well, I went and bought a few online and they work. It is a thermastically controlled timer of sorts. There are different variations, but the one I have turns on when the temperature hits 35 and turns off when the temp gets back up to 45. I'm using them for the first time tonight. I installed them earlier tonight when it was 45 out. It's now 35 and they're on. They're connected to emergency lights (the kind that you hang from the hood of your car when you're working on it at night) with 100 watt bulbs under frost cloth. The only issue is that I can't sleep becasue I'm …

Hookeri X Macrocarpa
by ellidro- 8 replies
- 1.3k views
Just saw an auction for a hybrid between Chambeyronia Macrocarpa and Hookeri. It says it comes from a well known palm collector in Hawaii who has both trees next to each other and producing seeds. Apparently the seeds look different and the seedlings are growing noticeably faster. Any thoughts or anyone know who this collector may be? Here's a link I hope it works. http://cgi.ebay.com/1-Subli....iewItem

I'll be out of town for eight days during the upcomping Holidays. During that time, I obviously won't be able to protect anything if it gets cold. I was thinking about leaving frost clost over my more tender stuff just incase we get a freeze or frost. Are there any issues with covering palms for such a long duration?

How do I get Allogoptera arenaria to do this?

I saw these in the garden at University of South Florida with Regina (Metalfan) a few months ago. I never really liked Allogoptera arenaria, but when I saw these I became an instant fan. Do they usually grow so much clear trunk? Are these even A. arenaria? This one even had a double trunk!

Normanbya in PA
by 2cold- 12 replies
- 1.2k views
I found a normanbya in the "death" section at Lowes, and decided to take it on as a project. It is 10 feet tall, and looks to be worth a try. I had a very hard time finding out what it really was, but I believe it is a normanbya normanbi. Any tips on helping this palm return to good health? It had half of the soil missing, and was beat up pretty bad. I live in PA, and have it in my sun room, re-potted and cleaned up. Thanks for any help you folks can offer!

Bad Greenhouse Moment
by metalfan- 9 replies
Our first "real" winter weather...it's 33F at the moment. Saturday morning at about 3am a major severe weather cell blew through as the cold front approached and knocked out our power. We had three trees fall down (ugh, chainsaw time again) It was about 65F at the time, so no big, but it was supposed to drop to 29F this morning. Fortunately the power company got the power going PDQ and so at the moment everything in the greenhouse is a toasty 50 or so. I was really worried. We have never lost power before when it was forecast to be COLD,only during the summer storms when it really doesn't matter. I have a small backup generator I can use to heat the greenhouse w…
