Sub Prime Crisis and Palm Sales
by Palm Guy- 13 replies
- 1.2k views
Hi all, I work at a brokerage firm by day, palm nut by night and weekends and sometimes during work too! I've been hearing about the sub prime mortgage crisis in the states which has now spilled over the world. I know that many stock markets are down but what about the palm market??? Have any of the nursureymen taken a hit? In theory, a recession will usually have negative effect on non-essential goods like palms (Although to the palm aficionado palms are essential). I can see a rise in sales for certain palms species such as the coconuts since cocos generally fall into the food industry (which are essential goods - thus recession proof). What do you guys think…

Syagrus! vagrans!
by DoomsDave- 6 replies
Howdyall: I want (as you know by now) an S. vagrans, which a Queen palm relative, which branches underground and looks like a clump of queenie seedlings, up to about 8 feet tall. I want to use them for both a curiosity and a hedge, to block out the neighbor's ugly as a pimpled butt roof I have to stare at every time I leave the front door of my place, and have to explain to people . . .. So, no. one: how fast do they grow and how tall do they get. In the words of Jimi Hendrix, are you experienced in such matters? And, who has them for sale? Up to five gallon size. And, for how much? (Hope they're NOT made out of gold and can't be sold . . . . ) Tha…

Acelloraphe -- Cany U Dig It??
by DoomsDave- 9 replies

Howdyall: One of a number of errors I made in palming at my place is misplacing (putting in a not-cool spot) an A. wrightii, that's lovely, but not enough room. So, I'm gonna dig it up and move it. I'd like to do it now . . . . Anyone have any thoughts on how they take being dug up and moved. This one is about 6' (2 m) tall, and about as wide, with multiple trunks. Thanks! dave

Palm Diary
by metalfan- 16 replies

I mentioned my "Palm Diary" on the Iguanura thread I had and Frito wanted to know about it. I started it a little over a year ago and recorded all the palms I had then. I have added to it since. Mine is in a spiral notebook. I start with the following info on each palm: Name place I bought it from (or if it was a trade or gift, from who/where) and how much I paid date I got it size it was when it came (height), # fronds any interesting info about it (rarity, only survives in cultivation, origin, natural habitat characteristics ie--"grows along streambeds in Borneo etc) culture info (lighting, soil, water, etc) If I keep it potted, I record the pot size Whe…

Growing Palms From Seed
by austinl01- 18 replies
I'm just curious as to the best method for propagating seedlings. Here are my thoughts: 1. Plant the seeds in a community pot and separate the seedlings when they get one or two leaves. 2. Pot up the seedlings into 4 inch pots and grow them for 1-2 years. 3. Then, pot the seedlings into 1 gallon pots and grow 1-2 years. 4. Plant the palm in the ground or bump up to 3 gallon pots. What are your methods of growing seedlings? I'm looking for some ideas. Do you think my method is a good one?

Cycads stolen from Lotusland 1 2
by Cycadcenter- 45 replies
- 4.2k views
This was just posted to another group by Jeff Chemnick. Unfortunately, I have to report that 3 small cycads were stolen from the cycad garden at Lotusland in Santa Barbara, California during the month of November, 2007. The plants were fist-sized and had been in the ground for approximately two years . The species stolen were Encephalartos latifrons, E. dolomiticus, and E. nubimontanus. The thief removed the accession tags along with the plants, then carefully replaced the dirt and mulch to make it appear as if nothing had happened. If anyone has any information regarding this crime or the whereabouts of the plants, please contact me ASAP either by email…

Roughed up home-depot Royals..
by AS in SA- 10 replies

I was shopping at Home Depot and of course wandered over to the garden section. They've had the two same Royal palms for at least the last year or so - they're starting to look pretty sad too. I've been wanting to pick up a Royal to put in the ground this spring, but am wondering if I should find something that's in better shape or if these might still work. The list price was $197.00 on each, but the garden manager said he'd be willing to sell them to me for half that if I was interested. Photos below - one of my main concerns is that both palms appear extremely pot-bound and have also put on a few inches of trunk - will they grow out of this or possibly have const…

The special PALMS supplement about the genus Pritchardia just reached us, and there has been some conversation on this genus. Pietro Puccio, shared this picture of the plant he grows in his garden by Palermo, Sicily. It was received in December 1993 as a seedling from Palme per Paket. Quite compact, but not blue.

Ok guys what the heck is a Hilo Palm???? Stopped at Home Depot in Kapolae tonight and found about 1/2 dozen of these palms in 3 gallon pots. I bought one for $20. I'll take better pictures in the morning under natural light, but in the mean time these will have to do. There is a slight pink tone to the crownshafts.

Let the palm have it's brown leaf already
by osideterry- 2 replies

I'm convinced my palms insist on having 1 ugly frond. By that, I mean if I trim that one brown frond off, in a few days the next oldest leaf turns brown. If I trim that one off, the next oldest one turns brown, etc. By giving a palm that one sorry leaf, it has a chance to build a full crown. Am I starting a palm "wive's tale" or "e-myth"? It could be psychological I guess. After trimming that first leaf, you keep raising the bar. "That next ones a bit yellow..." snip. I say leave a brown one. You are the only people in the world who might relate to this.

After Wal very kindly took the time to visit my website, he suggested that this month's poll may raise some interest here, so here it is. My vote went with Madagascar, although it was a very close call between Indonesia and New Caledonia as well. Sorry for any other noteworthy palm locations that I have omitted.

Does anyone from SoCal or 9b FL have Calyptronoma occidentalis growing? How does it do? I might like to try this palm but am not sure about cold tolerance. I know Calyptronoma plumeriana can be found in a few SoCal gardens, but it is not from Jamaca.

Propagation of Pony Tail 'palm'
by Double C- 6 replies

Hi a little help from someone please. I have a Pony Tail, [beaucarmea Recurvata] in flower at Present. I realise that it is tree not a palm however, as they are 'referred to' as palms, possibly some knowledgable contributor may be able to assist. I would like to know how to recognise the seeds, know when they are ready to collect, and any tricks of the trade to assist the successful propagation from the seeds. Thanks in advance, Chris C....

My neighbors...
by osideterry- 26 replies

The nice folks across the street had two 35ft washy robustas removed because they were shading out the flowers they were trying to grow below. What took 20 years to grow is now a 10 square foot plot of ordinary flowers and ground cover. Now the new people next door are even crazier. I heard a lot of noise going on. Out front is a big wood chipper. They are right now taking down every tree of size on the lot. Two 25ft queens, and 2-3 tall sycamores so far. I'd bet my 403( that those are not going to be replaced with mature, boxed trees. I'm dumbfounded that 20-25 years of growth is going into a woodchipper. I can hear it grinding as I type.

Recently there was a posting re the 2000 year old seed germination, when reading the article it was mentioned the seed was soaked in water with a chemical added, With some species having a low germination rate it would be worth discussing ways of improving germination rates prior to sowing, What chemicals are available to do this regards Colin

This palm is doing so well in a container. I want to know, how long can I reasonably expect to leave it containerized? I am not sure that I have any more space inside the greenhouse on the floor to plant any more larger growing palms. I am saving some space for the stoloniferous ones I bought at Tampa last fall (I am going to take out hte large stand of golden crinum that I now know is hardy here and replace it with the Chamie stolonifera). But how about this one? ANyone have a BIG one, or an older one that can give me an idea of how big they are at a certain age?
