Variegation - discussion
by Gbarce- 17 replies

I just wanted to share these shots of variegated rhapis I saw in one of the plant shops over here and ask the experts about (and probably have an open discussion about) the "phenomenon" of variegation. Most of the variegated Rhaphis they had were almost purely golden.

A cool Sunday afternoon
by Carlo Morici- 15 replies

I gave a camera tour of my wild garden today, during a cool sunny afternoon. Nights fell at 10 C, which is the coldest we can get. Days achieve a weak 20-22 C at midday. This afternoon it was about 15-17 C. Native Asphodelus. Behind Coccothrinax crinita (duller than usual in winter), Hyophorbe lagenicaulis (less colours) Heliconia indica, Cryosophila sp., Chambeyronia macrocarpa Another Heliconia indica, they are very cold sensitive when in pots, not in the ground. Working in the patio

I fell in love with a common palm
by www.dadluvsu.com- 28 replies

Decided to take the bicycle into work today. Always a nice ride into work... I passed by a house with a regular plain ol' queen palm, Syagrus romanzoffiana. She happened to be showing off her loverly flower this morning and it just caught my eye... I must be a palm freak because I was able to appreciate this commonly mis-used and over planted palm one more time. Have a look, isn't she a beauty! (I still think they are overtrimmed all too often )

A year to the day
by DoomsDave- 3 replies

Howdyall: Recall that exactly one year ago, we here in So Cal were all gnashing our teeth and crying into our beer and any other handy liquid about that awful MLK weekend freeze. Thanks to everyone worldwide for your sympathy! I want my Big Ollie back! That said, almost everything else recovered, though the Ravenea hillebrandtii got really tweaked. Hmm. What have I learned from this? That R. oleracea is really marginal here . . . . . How about the rest of you?

chamaedorea flowers @ anthesis
by MattyB- 3 replies
Since the shutdown of Kamipalms website I can't find any good anthesis pics. Does anyone have one? I've got some C. alternans pollen that I'm trying to apply to C. plumosa. Probably not a probable hybrid but I thought I'd try. But I can't tell if the flowers are at anthesis yet. Do they noticeably open up and show a little yellow?

Saw a great doco tonight on the flood plains of the Kalahari. There was a few different palms shown, one had fan leaves and I was wondering what it may have been. There were elephants shaking it to get the fruit. Anybody know what it is ? Hyphaene palm of some sort perhaps ?

Germinating Thrinax radiata seeds
by PalmatierMeg- 1 reply
Hello all, I just picked about a dozen white seeds off my Thrinax radiata. How do I go about germinating them? Do they need to be cleaned? Left to dry out & how long? Soaked before germination? My palm has dozens more seeds coming on. Are they worth collecting, i.e., would anyone be interested in them? Thanks.

Hi everybody, James here... I am new to IPS and just wanted to do an intro. I moved over here from Bananas.org. I live in Sand Springs, OK zone 7a. Anyway I really am just getting into palms (trying to diversify from JUST banana plants). I have washingtonia robusta and filifera, sabal minor, trachycarpus fortunei, and trachycarpus wagneranius x fortunei (spelling latin species names is not my specialty by the way) and that is about the extent of my collection.... hopefully I will expand a bit more pretty soon. Have a good day/night! -James-

New to Forum & IPS 1 2

Hello to All, I joined IPS effective 1/6/08 after following this forum for a number of months. I'm really impressed with your vast font of knowledge. Palms fascinated me all my life but I finally got to indulge when I moved from VA to FL in 1993. Initially, I planted the usual suspects but finally (after a 3+ year detour courtesy Hurricane Charley) am looking to get on track with the rarer and more exotic palms. The freeze on Jan 2/3 slapped some of my babies around (the night time sprinklers left icicles coating everything). Currently, I have Syagrus romanzoffiana (7 - too many, I know), Ravenea rivularis (3), Livistona decipiens (3), Washingtonia filifera (50' …

Pest Management - How do you do it?
by www.dadluvsu.com- 8 replies
I seem to have an ongoing bout with scale and mites in my shadehouse. I have learned that I can apply a couple different chemicals in weaker than recommended doses as a foliar drench about 3 times a year and it seems to keep the pests from feeding on my palms. This preventative and chemical style keeps my plants looking good, but the chemicals are not cheap. Alot of us live out our palm fantasies in a container style habitat, and I was wondering what ya'll do for pest management?

A palm i saved from certain death

My uncle had this poor old kentia in one of his offices(apparently its been there for 9 yrs !!) anyway he said" i am throwing out a dodgy palm > do you want it ? " this was in oct 07 . I repotted it ( was unbelievably rootbound in the smallest pot) with a good mix then put it under my pergola in 50 % shade and fed it every fortnight with thrive liquid at half the recommended rate . Its made an amazing recovery and i am confident that it will have produced 3 lush fronds by the end of our growing season late May . I would say by the frizzled fronds it was serverly malnutritioned .

Anybody growing Elmer's Palm?

I decided to do a little housekeeping today and pulled off a dead leaf to reveal some beautiful color on this gem. It's a youngin' that I picked up at the Palm Beach Palm Society's sale in Boynton recently. It must have been grown from a seedling in FL as it had a Kapoho Palms pot stick in the dirt. Anyone have some photos to share? Here's a couple pics! I really should get a camera that doesn't focus automatically.

Hi, I have a few photos of a Pritchardia growing in Brisbane Australia. The owner passed away last year and his wife does not know the species. It seems to be quite hardy as I have grown some from the seeds and winter does not Knock them around at all. The seed is about 10-13mm in diamater. If someone out there can identify it I would be most appreciative. Cheers Brod

I don't mean to intrude with this post but with so many varieties of seeds/plants that you offer and you guys obviously have a much wider access to palms than ordinary hobbyists like us-- I am really curious as to what palms you have in your private /personal collection? What are your pride and joys? Come on guys -- brag a little.

Shocked palm
by SubTropicRay- 2 replies

In last week's cool snap, I had to move a couple of potted and rooted in palms. One of these was a 3 foot tall Normanbya. A few days after breaking free the roots, some of the older leaves have yellowed. I assume this is transplant shock from which it will eventually recover. Is there anyway to minimze the effects of this? Superthrive drench? Thanks in advance, Ray
