New Dypsis
by ellidro- 19 replies
- 1.6k views
I bought some seedlings from a reputible dealer in southern california. He said the seeds were bought as dypsis albofarinosa from gunther in Madagascar about a year ago. These seedling look nothing like the albofarinosa that Jungle Music or Floribunda are selling. Apparently these seedlings are only a little over a year old and have grown way faster than any other dypis he has grown including onilahensis and baronii. Let me know what you guys think, its stumped a few pretty knowledgeable socal growers.

Palm That Can Handle Cold to 20-25 Range
by _Keith- 9 replies

First., this list is getting big, which is cool. It is a not a "safe" list. This is a list for folks who get cold fronts in the mid to low 20s that are looking for a single comprehensive list of plams to try. Some may go fast, some may last a few years, some may last longer than you. Where did the list come from? They were either listed on Palmtalk as someone growing them in a climate similar to above or found on some website's cold hardy palm list. I will keep adding and updating the list, but to be one it, the palm should be planted in the ground favorable microclimates OK, and not given undue protection except maybe when young. And of course, no potted palms. …

I purchased two of these palms and they were sold to me as Dypsis hovomantsina. There is some debate about this palm so I am not confident in this ID. Although my images will not show it there is a definite heel on this palm. Any ideas?? Patrick

Ravenea or Dypsis?
by BS Man about Palms- 16 replies
- 1.4k views
Seeing the direction Carlo's thread has taken has prompted me to post a possibly related mystery palm. I picked this up from JDA's just less than a year ago and Dan and Jerry weren't sure what it was. Jerry says Ravena "something" and Dan says Dypsis "something". I'm not real sure either way. Its in a 15 gal pot and it will go in a 24" box in the spring. It is "smooth" on the petioles like a Dypsis, (no hairs) but its kinda growing like a Ravenea.

Just before the New Year I picked up a few palms from a grower in North San Diego County. This was sold to me as Dypsis malcomberi. Here are a few images as I am looking to confirm ID. There were two seeds that germinated in this pot so it is not clumping. Thanks Patrick

RHAPIS CULTURE
by PalmGuyWC- 16 replies

This thread is to consolidate the three threads on this board concerning Rhapis. Jeff, my experience with blooming and seed setting of Rhapis goes back to when I lived in Florida, and that's been many years ago, so maybe my memory has become a little foggy. I lived off and on at Paul Drummond's in Coral Gables Fla. for about 7 years, with two years in the army during that period. Paul had several large clumps of Rhapis excelsa growing around his garden and they were all from the same clone and they were female. They would bloom each year, and they would grow "dummy" fruit because he didn't have any male plants. He finally located a gentelman with a male plant, so t…

New Here.... moving to Florida
by Derekjp- 12 replies

Well, after 27 years of living in North Carolina I’m headed to Florida. I’ve wanted to move to a warmer climate for the past 10 years. Now my dreams are finally a reality. It’s funny because I know so many people in NC who moved from Florida. I'm so glad I found this site as I didn't realize there were this many people who shared my passion for growing palms and tropical plants. I’ve grown bananas, cactuses and many palms in NC, but always have to move them indoors during the winter. I'm a property manager and manage several apartment complexes in eastern NC. I’ve had the ability to plan large landscaping projects and load several of my apartment sites with palms. …

Will Arcontophoenix cunninhamiana die @ 25F? 1 2

Alright palmophiles, my A. cunninghamiana has gotten big enough that it's hard to protect during freeze events. Our forecast low is in the mid 20's later this week. How bad would you expect the plant to be damaged...or do you think it will die outright. KS...Jacksonville, FL.

Fruit maturation in Phytelephas
by Dewayne in Ticolandia- 3 replies
I have some fairly old heads on my Phytelephas but have never harvested a ripe bunch. Do the fruits in the head dehisce releasing the seed, or does the head just rot and disintegrate. I'm worried that I may be leaving the heads on the too long. I'm not sure I want the seeds for germination, since the lady who gave me the plants said they took 4 years to germinate.

The Genesis of my illness
by DoomsDave- 9 replies

I start this at BS' behest. I've always loved palms since I was a little kid. I hated Ohio winters (swimming beats skiing every time) and palms grew where it never got cold. Or, so I thought at the time. Plus, they were easy to draw (badly), so all of my art class pictures of houses had palms around them. Went to Corpus Christi Texas in the winter of 1979, saw the lines of tall washies along Ocean Drive, and was hooked. Left Texas under inauscpicious circumstances, but the palms never left me. Went to California in 1985, bought a house in San Bernardino in 1986, on September 1. On September 2, 1986, I planted a bunch of Syagrus noodlesromanoffianum, whic…

Dypsis decipiens 1 2
by ruskinPalms- 45 replies
- 3.3k views
D. decipiens has turned out to be the darling of last year's california freeze. The freezes get just as cold here in florida and occur more frequently than in california - even if it is warmer in FL overall. It just seems like there must be a way to grow one of these here. Any suggestions or theories out there how to get one of these to grow in a hot, humid climate? Thanks for any ideas!

Sorry, no palapa so I'll post here. I've got these holes that are everywhere on my hillside. I'm pretty sure that they're not gopher holes as they are only about the diameter of a nickel (3/4"). I've got a lot of stink bugs. Could this be from them?

Greenhouse Temps
by freakypalmguy- 11 replies
Hi all, Just finished my new 6 X 10 greenhouse. It is my first and I was just curious about the recommended Temps high and low for a greenhouse. I will use it for seed germinating mainly and winter protection on those colder days and nights. I have a thermostacally controlled heater so at what temp should it be set at to at night to keep seeds in germination mode? Also it is a soft sided unit, other than the manual circular vents included in the kit, is there an inexpensive self opening unit I can put in it for those hot days? Pics to follow. Matt

This is a big deal for me since I have my first germinations of palms I actually collected in Madagascar on my last trip. I did not do the actual germination, I let my good friend and master plantsman George Sparkman do the honors. Never-the-less, it has more meaning to me since I field collected the seed. Here are some photos; My prize palm, Dypsis Black Stem Vicona Dypsis Ambositra (True Form)

Hi folks! I have a bunch of these seedlings that someone unloaded on me. Now, I know this is a relatively new variety and I've only just begun my search for information on this one. I figured I'd ask here first if anyone has any info or links I can take a look at to give me more info. Ive read a few things comparing them to T. princeps, but I really don't know. So, if anyone's got any info. for me, please share & it's very much appreciated!! Thanks in advance... Pat
