Changing red Chamby
by brodklop- 6 replies
I grew this Chamby from seed about 3 years ago. The new red leaves weren't anything to write home about. They were more brown than red and were the same from day dot till the latest leaf which is rich red. Has anyone else had this sudden change or is this normal for the standard Chamby. By the way this was dug up about a year back and put in a pot for 6 months then planted. Growing conditions are basicaly the same. Regards Brod The latest rich red leaf before Leaf while in a pot

Planting question
by rozpalm- 4 replies
I recently had some re-landscaping done on my front yard and have a question I think I know the answer to but want to make sure before I call them and tell them to re-do what they did. The goal was to plant plants around my Royals to give them a skirt. They used green island ficus. Instead of digging down into the roots of the Royals they built up the dirt around them about 4"-5" including the mulch. Won't this hurt the royals having this dirt up against their trunks? All of the trees range from 8gw to 16gw. Thanks, Ron

Queen Palm removal
by bgl- 5 replies
- 8.9k views
OK, here's one more challenge for you guys. Received another e-mail from Rusty at Allen Press, and this came from a James J. Cope & paste from that e-mail: "I have 14 Queen Palms in my back yard, and need to remove 3 of them. They are leaning against my tiled roof. What is the best way to remove and kill the root-ball? Looking to use a chemical treatment that will reduce the root-ball and not contaminate the soil…I want to replant with “Pigmy Palms”. My irrigation backflow and electrical is too close to have it professionally removed...had contractors look at it. Need your assistance; James L. J." So, who has some good ideas? Bo-Göran

Arizona's Best, Palm Tree Food
by buffy- 6 replies

Anybody try this stuff out. It has Iron, Manganese and Zinc at 3%, 1% and 1% concentrations, respectivly. It's manufactured by Western Organics, Inc. out of Tempe. I showed up at my Mom and Dad's house here in Scottsdale and discovered that he had 6 large Queens suffering horribly from Frizzle-Top. This is the only product I found at Lowe's that had the trace elements like Manganese. I soaked this in with a lot of water (no burn showing on the grass and annuals after a couple of days). I bought him a couple of extra bags to put out every couple of months. Should this do the trick in these alkaline soils.

Palm variegation
by Scott Mcintosh- 7 replies
I have a pinnate leaf palm that showed variegation on its seedling leaves 2yrs ago. The palm produced 7 pinnate leaves that showed no variegation. In the last 2 weeks it begain to open the 8th pinnate leaf. The 8th leaf shows variegation from the terminal leaflets to 1/3 down the leaf. The variegation is only on one side of the leaflet vein. The terminal leaflets (show no green) are showing signs of sun burn. Do I need to remove this palm from the sun? Or maybe this is just a fluke?

Big Butia growing in southern Europe
by Christian_G- 19 replies

Hi I had posted some times ago pictures of a big Butia which I was not able to identify; I went back to this palm and I took again some pictures which are hopefully helpful for identification. The inflorescence spathe was not 'woolly' and the petioles seemed broader than in other Butias growing nearby. Flowers were not visible. In the meantime, the palm was labelled as Butia capitata, but I have never seen a B. capitata with a trunk of this size. What do you think? Big Butia Big Butia trunk base - the lenght of the shoe is 30cm which corresponds to 1 foot. Big Butia - close up of the leaves Ciao, Christian
