Old man (palm) transplant update
by ThunderSRQ- 21 replies
- 4.7k views
Well...I posted last week about an old man palm that I was transplanting from a location 90 miles away and was able to complete the job succesfully (I had gone there previously three times to root-prune it and just needed to complete the dig under the root ball, get it out of the hole, load it up, head home, and re-plant it in the hole I had already dug in my yard). However -- a job I thought would take about 30 minutes (on site) turned out to be a "brutal" 3 hour sweat-fest battle that resulted in me getting back home just short of 2 AM!!! In summary, this palm was located in a very tight, heavily vegetated back yard so there was no way to get a tree spade, hoist, et…

Kabary in Costa Rica? Dogs with hats?
by DoomsDave- 0 replies

Howdyall: I thought I'd just put up a post about the big Kabary in Costa Rica for the Big B, as in Biennial. Kabary ("kabarrr") is a Malagasy word for friendly fun gathering, which I know this is. (Bruno gave me the word, for the second time . . . .) So, who's there? And, is fun being had by all? What poisons are being consumed? Shellfish being eaten, perhaps? Tell us! What have you seen so far that's amazing? I suspect pics will come later, but some verbal descriptions will get the salivary glands salivating and swoon-muscles flexed. Give it to us!

Public Plantings of Palm Trees

Group, I was reading Don's posting of "Cali Royals". He has taken pictures of all sorts of palms at South Coast Plaza in the Costa Mesa area of Southern California. It is a truly beautiful collection of palms around a shopping center. I was going to just click a reply to Don's posting. Instead, I decided to start a new thread. The reader might ask: "How does this happen". How does a major business or municipal garden get started? Do Board of Directors all get together and make decisions? Do they make an Ad Hoc Committee that spends 12 months researching a project. The answer is: No. The actual mechanism for plantings is usually decisions made by one person. A…

New additions to my beach garden
by Really full garden- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
I am always interested in finding new species that will do well at my beach garden. The conditions are harsh, windy, salt spray, poor soil and a very long dry season. The best candidates are from similar climates and they all seem to be really slow because to survive they have to develop a deep root system before there is much growth above ground. Syagrus schizophylla - this is about two years old and is planted in partial shade. It is doing very well and has put on two fronds since planting Dypsis madagascariensis "Lucuba" - this is doing well and appears to be a moderatly fast grower Gaussia maya, these are planted in partial shade under some tall citrus that will be …

Florida palm growers...
by ThunderSRQ- 9 replies
- 1.1k views
I'm doing a lot of planting right now and would like some input re: commercial soil mixtures as supplements to sandy Florida soil. I'm sure some of it depends on the type of palm but is there a "general rule" or formula that would be good to keep as a primary gameplan? Most of my yard is pretty sandy and, overall, I would definitely say that there is very little clay or other non-porous materials in my planting areas (and some holes I recently dug under my live oak canopy had nothing short of pure white beach sand once more than 8 inches below the surface!) As an FYI, right now, unless the palm is one that I know likes conditions more on the dry side, I typically p…

I have seen this little guy a few times now and can not figure it out. I asked the man who lived at the house, he was in the yard, and he said the landscaper gave it to him 16 years ago, but does not know what it is. I am hoping 1 of you guys do. It has a very short petiole, and a very stiff leaf.

Weather Damage
by napariag- 3 replies

I have recently purchased a Rhapis excelsa last week and now 75% of the leaves have fallen over, but they are still dark green. I had the plant on my front patio area, when I noticed it this morning. I am concerned about this plant it is very expensive. I have talked to the nursery owner about it and to see if he would take it back in exchange for another one. But he said that it just needs some water. I don't know what I should do? This is the first time this has occurred! I want to know will they come back to life and stand straight up or will all of the plants leaves that have fallen over just die. If so this is a problem because the plant is commonly known to …

My Garden

I've just renovated my garden around the house and try to put as many palms as I can. Due to limitted space, most of the palms I choose are small species or the ones that don't need a lot of spaces. Hope you enjoy it. The first pic is a corner of the garden. I planted Astrocaryum alatum, Licuala glabra var. Selangorensis and Carpoxylon and a few other species...

Neatly Trimmed or Over Trimmed

This is a typrical neatly trimmed rural home in South Louisiana, actually just down the road from my house. He has Washingtonias lining the driveway which are fairly new and two larger CIDP on the corners of his home. He has already kept his grounds meticulously neat. This is a look that is greatly admired in this area. So, my question on the CIDP is, are they overtrimmed, or just trimmed neat and tight but acceptable.

I noticed this palm and it says 'Hydiastele Pinangoides' but when I looked it up it didn't quite match up with the pictures in the net. The leaflets look wider and fuller and it has an attractive ' wavy ruffling' going on too. No red leaves too but maybe becuase there wern't any newly opened ones.

Was over by the South Coast Plaza today so I decided to take a few pics. Every time I go by I am constantly amazed at the number and size of these palms. I counted 61 royals on either side of the street and medians. I was reading that these palms were transplanted there in 2001 with about 6' of wood trunk. They have grown very nicely over the years. Hopefully I will be able to get the pics posted so here goes. you can see the massive trunks that are on these in comparison with the people walking. You can see there are quite a few

Well I potted up a few Dypsis decipiens today, around 120. It took me about 10hrs. There were a lot with red colouration in there, so I took a few shots. There is also my triple red D decipiens which sprouted three plants from the same seed. All three are happy little things all joined at the heel. One day the heel will break down and they will separate into 3 identical plants. You gotta love these decipies. Best regards Tyrone

Sanding Palm Trees
by Alicehunter2000- 18 replies
- 4.4k views
That's right, yesterday I passed by a crew of workers using a belt sander to sand smooth the trunk of a Canary Island Palm. The top was cut into a pinapple and sanded, then the remaining trunk. Is this common somewhere else in the world? Or are people down here just a little kooky? It actually looked pretty cool, as the sander was doing a good job at smoothing. Is this a new way of getting that manicured look? I'm going to try and get pictures tommorow of the finished product........if no one has seen anything like this. Looked pretty darn labor intensive and their was a massive pile of palm trunk sawdust at the bottom of the tree.
