Palm ID

Hello everybody. I joined this forum some months ago but I started posting recently. I live in Aegina, a Greek island near Athens with typical Mediterranean climate, with watering problems in Summer. Generally in Greek nurseries you can only find P.Canariensi, W.Filifera. P.Roebelini, C.Humilis,T.Fortunei and more rare S.Romanzofiana, P.Dactylifera. Normaly in our climate (especially in South Greece - Athens & below) we could cultivate more than 100 palm types - but this doesn't happens, mostly because nurseries are kept stuck in the past and they afraid to try something new. So the only way is from seed and to be honest, this started to happen because of Interne…

Bits and Pieces by wine bottle
by Walter John- 29 replies
- 1.3k views
Okay, I can't recall/find the ideas man or woman now but in another thread somebody started using a champagne bottle as perspective next to the palms and plants in photos as a variation of Dave's red shoes in the sunset style. I like the idea plus to make it even more interesting I've decided to use a bottle of tropical plum wine from the Bundaberg Tropical Fruit Winery. My wife and I have never been game to open it so I've found a use for it finally. I would dearly love to see, and I'm sure we all would, others add to this thread their palmy bits and pieces using a bottle of their choice for size comparisons etc., name your own poison ladies and gents and snarkaholic…

Devastation in myanmar
by merrill- 9 replies

I'd be very grateful if someone can identify the prevalent palm spp. towering over the landscape in the area of the devastating tropical storm. They seem to have survived well, albeit with the loss of many leaves. There were similar palms, but with straighter trunks, on islands in the South China Sea years ago. Thanks for any info - merrill

I purchased a nice little Dypsis fibrosa at the spring PBPCS sale. I was taken by the delicate look and the new red fronds. I was surprised to find out that some are clumpers. From the very few pictures I have seen I think I prefer the solitary form Anyone have this in their garden & what's your experience with it.

Hi guys , Does anyone know the requirements and cold hardiness of Wettinia kalbreyeri? As far as I know this "Wetti" is from high altitude cloud forest in the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador, growing in areas up to 2200m high. Wettinia maynensis is another that grows to elevations of 1600 m. Any experiences/ pictures?

The Palm Garden is Complete!!
by kylecawazafla- 26 replies

Today the experimental palm tree garden in Gainesville, Florida was finally planted! It really could not have been done if it weren't for the members on this board, and the existence of this board in general, so I thank everyone on here that played a roll in putting this thing together. It doesn't look like much now, but with time we'll learn the true hardiness of some palm trees , and hopefully also be pleasantly surprised with the affect structures have in creating a microclimate! There are definitely other people on this board who directly helped, but a special thanks to Bob Johnson, Cfkingfish, Bubba, Tank, and many more people! For pictures from the process, and…

I was at a friend's house this afternoon talking about her landscaping, when she said she wanted to put in a Queen because she liked the one across the street. She pointed to her neighbor's house. And what to wondering eyes did appears? A beautiful Adonidia merrilii about 20 ft. tall. It was on the South side of the house, in a corner with house walls on two sides of it, under an oak canopy. I have no idea how long it has been there, although I do not think more than a year since I never noticed it before. Even with all that protection, it has to have a short life expectancy. I hope they take care of it. Likewise, just a few blocks from me, a neighbor planted tw…

Why are we so addicted?

Is it just sheer beauty? Their difficulty in growing or obtaining? Iconism and symbolism of paradise? Is this even something that is explainable or do you even know why you have such a strong affection for this plant? What are your opinions? Why are you so stuck on palms?

JUBAEA Discussion
by PalmGuyWC- 3 replies

This has been an unusually cool spring in N. Calif, and only in the past week have my night time minimums crawled above 50 F (10C). I have 4 large Jubaeas and one has been blooming for several years. I noticed about a week ago that the blooming one is pushing out two bloom spathes, and they are about half emerged now. I'm curious to know at what stage the Jubaeas are in bloom growing in San Diego along Mission Bay? Since you have warmer temps. in S. Calif., I'm wondering if the flowering is ahead of or about the same stage as mine. Normally, I would have Butias blooming by this time of the year, but only a few are pushing out their first bloom spathe. I used to think i…

Need someone to watch palms in TAMPA
by surgeon83- 4 replies
I'm sorry I have to post this here, but I am moving to south Tampa soon and I have to keep my stuff in storage there for 2 weeks prior to moving into my new house. The palms won't live in storage, so I am hoping that someone in the Tampa area would be willing to store and water my potted palms for 2 weeks (6/2-6/16) until I can move into my house. I will think of some way to reimburse you, whether we agree on palms, labor planting palms or weeding, or cash. They are mostly 5 gallons and smaller, with the exception of a 15 gallon bottle and 15 gallon majesty. All of the pots combined would probably need a 10x10 foot area at least to fit, maybe slightly larger. I …

Newest Leaves Completely Brown
by JimR- 23 replies
- 1.5k views
On one of my V. arecinas, the two most recent fronds have gone comletely brown. The older fronds are still green, though. This is a palm approx. 7 ft. tall overall. Perhaps 1 ft. of actual trunk. It has been in the ground since 2004. It is within 4 ft. of 2 other arecinas and within 10 ft. of a Ravenea rivularis. All of which are doing fine and do not show similar symptoms. What might be going on here? This palm is the closest to the salt water, and, during some recent freakishly high tides we had, the water would have been up on the grass about 3 ft. from the palm for a short period of time. That is the only idea I have had. If it is a reaction to the saltwater…
