On the palm side, I planted two more P. sylvestris to make a trio of sylvestris in one of my front beds. It should be a dramatic effect in a few years. I started on the holes for my 5 new Livistona, but it was still a bit wet where they are going to go. I expect to finish them up later in the week. On the non-palm side, I planted 3 Arizona Cypress. a "found" Althea, a weeping Mulberry, and a Silk Floss Tree. Oh, and a few bananas went in the ground, one named "Bordelon" and other one unidentified that makes small edible bananas here in mild winter years. So, what did you do this weekend? Tell us all about it. Keith

Green water & seedlings
by John in Andalucia- 2 replies
Our water supply is not treated. It comes from river and rain water that is piped to houses in our area for agricultural use. It is not "agua potable", so you can't drink it. We store it in a very large concrete deposit that builds up with algae from time to time, and I was wondering if it was harmful to palm seedlings, or does water containing algae microbes benefit plants over treated "city" water? It's smelling a bit "dockside" on the floor of my greenhouse.

Dypsis Baronii x Fine leaf
by Urban Rainforest- 2 replies
My single trunk Baronii and one of my Dypsis fine leaf "fakey" are right next to each other and flowering at the same time. The Baronii has produced viable seed for two years in a row but this is the first time the fine leaf has flowered. So what are the possibilities of hybidizing these two palms? Are the chromizomes all wrong? Has anybody tried this? I have heard that Dypsis Hybridize easily ala Teddy x Triangle etc. Either way I'm going to give it a shot so what do you think? I'm looking forward to more of my Dypsis flowering so I can try to make some freaky hybrids . Steve

Dypsis Saintelucei
by fisherman1- 12 replies
- 1.7k views
A while back I picked up two Dypsis Saintelucei. I had them in pots outside and when it got cold they really took a hit. One died and I moved the other inside where it is doing real good. This is a beautiful palm in my opinion. I recently picked up several small palms and all are doing well except for my two new Saintelucei. The weather has been good and they are all in shade. The Saintelucei are very finikey for me. I have looked around and I can not seem to find out very much about this palm. Is anyone having success with this palm in So. Cal. Thanks F1

Hyphaene compressa Seed Germination
by plantapalm- 5 replies

I have been looking for info on getting these monsters started. I have read a few different tips from RPS on a Hyphaene coriacea and 1 of them was talking about a vice and saw. I have not found any info on my Hyphaene compressa seeds. I know I should soak them for several days to a week. But does anyone have any good tips for starting these seeds. Where should I cut into it, if I am to cut into it at all?

Palm Mycorrhizal associations
by Kailua_Krish- 10 replies
- 1.3k views
I was thinking in my botany class about mycorrhizal associations and how they often help plants perform better in the environment. After class I researched it and found a couple of articles showing how these associations significantly improved the health and production of Phoenix dactylifera in middle east palm groves and another on a tropical mexican species of palm. The articles also mentioned that it has been suggested that these associations may also improve disease resistance. I was wondering if anyone ever intentionally infects palm seedling roots with this fungus and if so how are the growth rates impacted. I'm guessing that when planted in ground they get infected…

Project Foxtrot
by Walter John- 8 replies
- 1.1k views
What is "Project Foxtrot" ? It is a study of undetermined (claimed) foxtail hybrids to determine growth speed, and hopefully discover exactly what species are on board. To assist and to cross examine, true Wodyetia and Veitchia palms are part of this study. What is known about these seedlings ? It is known that the source of supply considers one batch of seedlings foxtail and Veitchia arecina hybrids and another batch foxtail and Adonidia hybrids. How long will the project take ? Approx. 2 years Will you seek funding for this project ? No, but all donations and bribes greatfully received. That's all for now folks, as winter is coming on here, not likely t…

A remarkable palm find in Madagascar?
by rafiki- 24 replies
As readers may know by now, Peter Balasky, Guy Rafamantanantsoa, Pierrot Rahajanarina and myself were in Madagascar during the month of April. Each year we target specific forested areas and pick selected palm species to try to find and photograph. This year Dypsis furcata and Dypsis lanuginosa...two palm species not seen for many years...were our objective in several small forests in the south east of the country. Imagine the electric shock when Pierrot yelled out...what is this...what is this? We all rushed over and stood in awe! Our guides did not believe that the palm in sight was a palm! Dypsis lanuginosa is represented by a single herbarium specimen in Paris an…

Palm Growth Rates
by PalmGuyWC- 13 replies
- 1.7k views
Like Wal, I'm conducting a little experiment of my own. After 5 days of blistering heat, the heat wave is subsiding and my low this morning was 60 F (15C), which is about normal for this time of the year. Last evening, I marked 3 different palms with a felt pin. Rather than just puting a line across the emerging frond and the nearest petiole, I drove a thin bamboo stake in the ground next to the palm and put the mark on the emerging frond at the top of the bamboo stake. I think this is a more accurate way to determine growth rate since a nearby petiole could be growing also. I'm trying to determine if palms grow more at night than they do during the day. The 3 palms I…
