Bethel palm?
by Tropical T-Bone- 7 replies

While at a local nursery here in S. Fla., I came across an appx. 5' tall slender pinnate palm marked "Bethel Palm". A google search came up empty. Just curious if anyone recognizes this name. Sorry I don't have a pic, and my palm IDing ability is in it's infancy. Thanks for any info, Rob K.

Beccariophoenix "Southern Form"

I got ten seeds from RPS when these were offered about a year ago and now have seven seedlings bursting out of small sized tree pots. They seem to be fairly fast growing.I am going to bump them up to five gal. sized pots. RPS also mentioned that these seeds came from a coastal population.I am always interested in trying new species that have potential to do well in my beach garden.Does anyone have photos or experiences with mature palms?

After seeing so many of these incredible palms in habitat, it might be interesting to compare with what we have in cultivation. I just went out for a couple of night shots, and will get some more during daylight tomorrow. First, our largest Welfia regia. No new red frond at this point, but the trunk and crownshaft is pretty colorful as well. And I don't remember seeing this in Costa Rica. Probably because no one was out there in the rainforest, cleaning them up (which is what I had to do with this one). A full view (well, almost) and then a close-up of the trunk (about 5 ft of trunk at this point)

This palm caught my eye while driving through a neighborhood as we left the Ford/Edison winter estates in Fort Myers,FL. I have never seen such a small skinny palm anywhere around here. Any guesses? a small grove of these would be be neat in a patio setting. Thanks, Patrick

I am still out working as I write this, but took a minute to come in to cool off. It is right about 90F/32C out there. Hopefully you had some PRA (palm related activities) to talk about. I'll put up a few picture and my activities later. Being Memorial Day Weekend, it was a long weekend (3 day) here in the US. I am not sure if this holiday is celebrated elsewhere. That would be an interesting sidenote as well. Let us know if this is done in your country. So, what did you do this weekend?

Caryota transplant
by Trópico- 2 replies
Look at my Caryota mitis This picture was taken a few months ago. After getting away with just smacking open the new spears to prevent screen puncture, the last spear is just too thick and too high. Time for the dreaded transplant! So I went ahead and started by removing the suckers. The first one I planted in a pot and all it's fronds dried except the spear. Based on past experience I figure it's working on its root system. The rest, some didn't make it, some are in a bucket of water (in an attempt to get them to root some more). Now it's time for the main trunk. Due to removing of all the suckers and associated dirt, the palm is starting to lean. It has a f…

Germinating Licuala spinosa
by Matt in SD- 20 replies
- 3.6k views
I collected about 50-100 licuala spinosa seeds in Hilo a year ago in March. I kept them in a tupperware container in my fish tank incubator with bottom heat for nearly a year and not one sprouted. Nearly all the other seeds I collected on that trip had sprouted within the first couple months. The temp in there is 85-90 F. A few months ago, I took all the good stuff out of there and turned off the bottom heat since I didn't have any new seeds to germinate. This tank is just sitting on a shelf in a dark place in my house, definitely NOT a warm spot. I looked today because I was going to get it going again for some new seeds, and well over half of the Licuala spino…

D. decipiens perplexing seed availability
by monkeyranch- 18 replies
- 2.2k views
Curious if anyone has knows why Dypsis decipiens seeds are hard to find in US. I buy thousands of seeds annually and know of the usual sources, RPS, Ortanique, EuroP., Trebrown, Amazonia, etc. No sighting on RPS for years. Is it CITES? No domestic harvests yet? Are they just limited and thus hoarded? I could use a few thousand of these. Any information would be appreciated. Thank You.

Palm ID, please (with photos)
by cagary- 1 reply

Bought a palm and was told it was Veitchia joannis, but found a label buried in the soil while planting it that said V. Montgomeryana (which, I believe, is the "old" name for V. arecina). Here's some photos of the palm that aren't real great. I don't know how helpful they will be, but I would appreciate your opinion as to which you might think it is. Thank you!

Identify The Problem
by Neofolis- 9 replies

This plant, sold to me as Pinanga dicksonii, which we decided on another thread isn't, has severely chlorotic foliage. I suspected it was an iron deficiency or other nutrient inbalance and, as such, I have re-potted it. I've bought some chelated iron to help, until the roots re-establish, but before I apply it, does anyone else have any ideas. I have spotted occasional webbing at the base of the petioles, which would suggest spider mite, but I don't see any actual mites, and I have removed the webs and sprayed and wiped the leaves. So what's your best guess?

Hi, I'm new here but I want to know lots. I live in New Zealand and my wife and I have built an new place by the beach North of Auckland. In our new garden we have planted lots of palms mostly Queen, a Kentia and some Majestic. Some horrible person tried to steal some by ripping them out of the ground. They weren't sucessful as the majestic they tried for had already made good roots held on but broke off leaving the roots behind, sadly it died of course. But now I have a space and I would love to plant a Fish Tail palm or two. I have read a bit but seemed to find conflicting info. Does anyone know for sure that given a few years that these Fish Tail or Chinese (I th…

Pinanga coronata...in pots
by pg6922- 8 replies
- 1.1k views
I went to HD to get some Sphagnum Moss for seeds and took a stroll down the palm isle. 2 palms caught my attention right away, fresh off the truck were 2 perfect pinanga coronatas just begging to come home with me. The story goes...I have a screened lanai/porch that my 2 cats have access to. I also have 2 planters that sit empty because the cats like to chew the leaves of whatever plants they get to. They also like to "throw up" all over the house what leaves they ingest. For this reason the pots remained empty for a while. Also, regular mulch is out, cause they also like to use the planters as a litter box. So, with all of this in mind, I still had to try th…

What Kind of Bugs are Eating my Palm???
by Derekjp- 1 reply
One of my indoor majesty palms is infested with some type of bugs, which are very quickly eating it alive! This palm used to be outside when I was in North Carolina. I've had it for several years and it's always gone outside in the summer. These bugs must only come out at night, because they are hard to find, but have ate 20-30% of the fronds. What should I do? Treat it with an insecticide or give up? The tree is right next to my bed so I'm not so fond of sleeping next to these sobs every night. the culprit damage thanks!
