Trithrinax campestris 1 2
by ghar41- 48 replies
- 8.4k views
A recent thread brought up the genus Trithrinax. T. campestris is one of my all time favorite palms... after all how many palms can be used to ward off a mugger? Is there a more strange palm found anywhere in the world? No other "blue" palm looks quite as unique although Ive never been able to capture their beauty with my digital camera. Ive always felt this palm should be more widely planted...who is growing it, and where? Post your photos!

Extra cold hardy mule palm cross.
by Jeff zone 8 N.C.- 5 replies

Has anyone ever tried to hybridise a mule palm with more cold hardiness? I would think that if you selected a mother and father with better cold hardy genes you could make such a cold hardy mule. I live in North Carolina and want to try it. I have selected a fast growing, thick trunked, red fruited Butia, with good form and cold hardiness and have removed the male flowers. I need Syagrus pollen to apply. Does anyone have a Syagrus with a little better than normal cold hardiness that is producing pollen? I don't need much. Just a little in a regular letter envelope would do the job. I will share seeds.

another fert q

Im working through figuring out how to fert my grass and my palms and I believe im going to resort to just using palm fert on the whole yard which wouldnt be a problem except finding decent palm fert in TX is about like finding rocks in FL.... Before I get some palm fert imported, I need to clear up what I think is a pretty bad potassium deficencies in some of my palms. Iknow potasium sulfate is normally the preferred way (or actually Kmag) but, does anyone have any experience with muriate of potash? Its the only thing I can find readily that may help, otherwise its mailorder (or trip to the valley time) As a related aside, anyone know if K problems will show them …

Sabal Riverside and Jubutyagrus
by Alberto- 28 replies

I have 3 year old plants of Jubutyagrus and S.Riverside that i was planning to plant near a pond. The water table will be high (+- 1.5 m - 2m) but the soil is well draining. What do you think? Is it a spot for the sabal? Will the Jubaea genes make this spot apropriate for the hybrid or will the queen genes make that it will thrive hear? BTW Livistona decora are growing very fast at the same spot! Thanks!

I hope this is just a combination of overwatering and too much sun at the same time, but the petioles are dying off in an unusual pattern... I know online diagnosis is difficult, has anyone seen such a pattern in their Carpoxylons? There has been a huge amount of precipitation here and my water system faulted and did not shut off during the rains so things are really wet here... For example we got 7 inches in the last 5 days. But I have this awful fear of LY entering the shadehouse, and I have a sneaky feeling that C. macro are very suseptable to it. Would LY look like this to a seedling or am I just dampening off/sun scortching my palms? These pics tell the awful…

Small Tropical Palm Care in 8B
by AggiePalms- 2 replies

I just got back from the Mango Festival at Fairchild Gardens; it was great, then with LOTS of help from Steve at Exotic Palms, Bill of Pious Palms, and Ellis at Redlands Nursery I picked out about 15 beautiful small (3 gallons or less) tropical palms to bring home. These include a Pinanga, Allagoptera, Kerriodoxa, Dypsis leptocheilos, a couple of Coccothrinax sp., etc. OK, I realize these can't survive an 8B-9A winter ouside, so I need some advice. I overwinter quite a few tropical palms and other tropicals inside in a probably too cold, too dry, too dark "sunroom", but they do survive and I've seen lots of growth on some during the past few years. The top of my Bism…

P. roebelenii
by chris.oz- 4 replies

I took this shot just to illustrate the range of foliage forms in the is palm. The one at the back has the best looking leaf I have ever seen on a P. rob. I got that palm for free at a house demolition in the next street. The palm infront of it, has a less compact crown and less even leaflet distribution just looks untidy by comparison. I know this is a popular palm, How many have specimens which are similar in leaf form to the form at the back?

coolest palm
by Bennz- 29 replies

What is the coolest palm, the one(s) growing in the most heat-deprived habitat? Ceroxylon utile at 4000m would be the obvious contender for the coolest palm title, if such a palm actually exists. I've heard that there are C. parvifrons in habitats that have light frost or snow on the ground nearly every day of the year, and have daytime max. temps. not above 10-15C. Anyone got any pictures of palms in seriously heat deprived habitats?

If I'm interested in keeping seed pure, how careful do I need be when considering where to plant these various genera? For example: What happens if I put my L. mapu under my L. elegans? Or my C. micholitzii under my C. spicatus. Or P. disticha under my P. speciosa. Or..............you get the idea?

Mystery Veitchia... input needed

Picked this up from a nursery in Miami. It isn't V. arecina or montgomeryana. Any ideas? It is just starting to trunk; the leafbase scars are very close together and the crownshaft and petioles are covered in black ramenta. Leaflets aren't concave on the adaxial surface like most other Veitchia spp.

When was the last time we had an election where the canidates had opposition? Not ever that I can remember in 25 years. It is not easy or cheap being a director. You need to make a trip a year, sometimes half way around the world. That eliminates many of us. We must have meetings on line in the future. There are plenty of ways to do this. Also an agenda could be published ahead of time and we could all chime in if we wanted, lord knows we all do it here! I know that Bo has made Palm Talk a great place and Dean and others are working to make it better. Our online presence should be expanded to include our publications and even more coverage of our affiliates meetings…

Miracle -small- plants

Have any of you had small stuff (say sub 5 gal size) that for whatever reason, you thought was dead, come back? Post your pix please. First I had the Licuala ferregamo? that was growing okay in its pot, then the emerging leaf looked funky and I pulled it out easily. As you can guess, I'm not quick to throw things/plants away and I noticed the old leaves continued to look just fine, So, I backed off on the water a little and its now pushing something out! I can't quite tell yet if its a new leaf, or the end of the last petiole.

cracking attalea
by palmhead44- 0 replies
calling all palmnuts of the world. what is the proper method for cracking attalea? they seem to have tight fibers inside unlike your average coconut. the fibers in cocos are loose and there is plenty of room to work with. when i buy attalea seeds, they're already processed. last year i collected the seeds too early and all the seeds were immature. this time i waited for them to fall off naturely. i'am assuming there are three seeds inside so that doesn't leave too much room to work with. maybe its the same method that is used for borassus. soaking for a couple of weeks hasn't helped. thanks for any advice, sean

Phoenix question
by gsn- 8 replies
I am aware that phoenix species need both a male and a female tree to reproduce. My question is regarding my reclinata. It was purchased as a 15 gallon ,about 3 feet tall and 3 stems,it is definately a hybrid, with some other phoenix mixed in,not a pure reclinata. This palm is now about 12 feet tall, and suckers profusely. I am trying to stay on top of it and I am removing all suckers except for 4 additional stems I am letting grow.I am trying to keep it trimmed to 7 trunks. It appears the original 3 stems were all female, as it has set seed for the last two years on those stems(not viable). I have not seen any male flowers,or any seed set on any of the additional 4 s…

Sabals dying in Florida
by plmcrzy- 8 replies

What is the latest scoop on the Texas Phoenix palm decline desease that is now spreading unabated in Florida? It is widespread in Hillsboro county and is also found in 5 other counties in west-central Fla. I understand that it was first found in Texas in the 70's and has no known cure. This is of concern to those of us here in South Eastern North Carolina as Sabal Palmettos abound. Plmcrzy in Wilmington, N.C.
