I'm just wondering if anyone has heard from Jason Cox lately? I know he was building a house etc, but I haven't seen him around for ages. I just wouldn't mind contacting him, but I'm not sure where to find him now. Anyone know. Best regards Tyrone

I wasn't happy with my sand mixtures (weight and compaction). I've just switched to small chunks of pine bark with a bit of perlite and compost-y soil. What are y'all thoughts on this mix. Drains great. Holds moisture. Light.

Lutz or Kuputz
by _Keith- 4 replies

Well, after looking at all of the data, and deciding what was BEST FOR ME, I decided to order the Lutz Fertilizer Spikes for my palms. After completing the easy online order form I was happy until the last step when the "error" message came back. So, I went back and hit refresh, and it said denied due to duplicate order. OK, it seems in spite of the error message it went through. Then, came the second cocern. Today, in the mail I got a great letter, all kinds of great data, and the order sheet confirming my order for 125 potassium spikes. Panic. I didn't order Potassium Spikes, I ordered the maintenance spikes. I had all kinds of horror in my mind. Wrong order…

Images of bud rot

A few days ago, the two newest leaves on this juvenile sabal brazoria were dried and discolored. The next day, the spear pulled. It was planted in March 2008. Sabal brazoria is a variation of sabal minor. I pretty much knew that it would die, so I pulled up the plant. Thought I would take some pictures. I think I know what caused the rot. Probably overwatering. The picture below shows the roots missing on one side. This is the side where I had put the irrigation. (The only other possibility was some bug. I've dealt with agave snout weevil and their damage is similar)

Paging Caryota experts

I purchased this caryota palm bare root by mail from a California source maybe 6-7 years ago (I'm in Lake Placid, Florida). It was sold to me as Caryota ochlandra. I thought C. ochlandra was not a clumper. I'm I wrong about this? After a few years in the ground an offshoot emerged, and is now about 1/4 the size of the mother plant. I've found this palm to be a fairly slow grower, at least compared to C. mitis, which I have two big clumps, one now in seed. Can anyone tell from the photos below what species caryota this palm is? Does it appear to be ochlandra? If not, what do you think? I have another caryota, a clumper, that I need I.D.d, but I will have to ta…

NT Government House Open House
by ariscott- 34 replies

I thought I would post this here... since I didn't travel anywhere (Dean - if you have to move it, I wouldn't get upset). Last weekend was NT Government House open house. It only happened once a year. I heard that the garden was nice and it was a must to go and visit... but I didn't realise it would be that nice. It is 20 years of constant work for a group of gardeners. Everything is well grown and looked after. The house was on the edge of the wharf, so it has steep slope to one side. It makes the gardens very interesting with meandering path. It would've been hard to garden and weed in the beginning, I would imagine. It has everything, not just palms; huge trees (I …

by _Keith- 11 replies

A friend who knows I am into palms, just sent me an email and says I have 2 of these you can have, bring your shovel. 6' wood fence for scale. I assume this is Sabal minor. And don't they have some massive underground thing going on? So, what is ahead of me? How much do I dig? Are the roots gonna die back anyway? Do I cut the foliage back? I want these palms, somebody give me the technique, please.

I've got a lot of Texas rhino beetles in my yard. They are palm borers. I'm trying to prevent infestations on my young (mostly one gallon) transplants. Is it safe to use Bayer 12 Month Tree and Shrub Insect Control with 1.47% Imidacloprid on my new transplants? It seems to be the only product approved for borers... Thank You Very Much.

Fertilizer burn/damage
by CromulentKevin- 13 replies

Hey y'all! I went a little nuts fertilizing the palms (with apex palm plus) in my front yard. I'm afraid I might have used too much. And I'm curious what symptoms I should look for if that is the case? And how long these symptoms would take to show up? I used an amount that was what they recommended for a medium level of fertilization. However, they suggested going all around the dripline. In my yard, much of the dripline is concrete, so I'm afraid I put an amount of fertilizer that should have been spaced out in a large area, instead condensed too heavy in a smaller planting bed. Anyway, I've never burned anything before, so I just want to know what can happen to palms…

Palms in pots permanently
by newtothis- 10 replies
Say I want to grow some palms that are close to my zone but out of it. Say one year it might get to 20F. I'm thinking of just keeping certain palms in pots permanently. THere is someone here from NY I think that ships his palms to a nursery during the winter. I think he buries the palm in the pot when it warms up. THe benefit I see is I can put them in the garage with a space heater during the winter and I think I heard you can stunt growth if you don't want a 100' plant?? Also if I have to relo I can take it with me. Can we discuss pros/cons of this

Coco Nuts

The Town of Palm Beach in its infinite wisdom decided it needed more Palms (which isn't a bad thing), but all in a row and all the same size?? This stretch of County Road was lined with Queen Palms but they were very scruffy and were removed (which was a good thing), but the new Cocos look like ants marching. The following photos are a little dark and I will post better ones if this thread goes anywhere. The trees looked to be spaced 10-12 feet apart and cost $1500 each. (You hear that Ken?)

I have heard (not sure I have read it somewhere too) that there are 2 varieties of Arenga Hookeriana an normal one and a compact form? I bought Arenga Hookeriana in 2 seperate occasions and they look like they are growing differently from each other. Here is a picture of the 2. The large one has been with me a year and the smaller one is a recent purchase. I am thinking that the smaller one might be the compact form??? What do you think - anyone out there thats really famillar with A Hookerianas??
