Palm Identification Please!
by KrisTX- 12 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi everyone! I received 5 of these plants (hopefully the pictures will upload) from my mother-in-law and I don't know what they are, where to plant them, how big they will get, how far away from each other to plant them, etc.! I was told they are palms and will be relatively short and wide; however, I have searched all over the internet looking for more specific information, to no avail. I found this website and y'all seem extremely knowledgeable and willing to lend a hand, so...any help would be GREATLY appreciated! -Kris in Southeast Texas

Archontophoenix myolensis 1 2

Visited the habitat with mikey and was surprised to see how little habitat there was for this palm to survive. Maybe 30-40 in habitat in an area along a creek 400m long by 40m wide, extremely fragile enviroment as on one end the land has been cleared probably will only survive in collections. hopefully it will be protected. So if you have one, appreciate how fragile their existance is in the habitat enjoy Colin

Howdy Yall, I have been wanting one of these for a while and to my surprise they had 2 of them at HD today. I'm so glad Morningstar Nursery is getting these on the market. I want 2 more to add a trio in the back yard. I think I will wait till after hurricane Ike passes before I plant it though. How many years before its gets a trunk? PG These are the ones 5 minutes from my house at Cape Harbor that put them on my short list.

Water in the palm crown test
by Palm Hound- 6 replies
At my place of work, I have often gnashed my teeth when I saw the sprinklers shooting out on top of the 2 CIDPs and the 4 groups of Roebeleniis. I think of bud rot, imagining pulling out a spear with a putrid stench. Actually there is no appearant damage to any of these palms. in fact, I see significant growth on the CIDPs. Some palms are susceptible to bud rot if watered with tap water into the crown. Right? Ravenea rivularis is one species that is susceptible to this. I think Howea forsteriana may have the same problem as I dealt with bud rot in mine. It is my understanding that palms with a crownshaft may not be affected or to the same degree by this travesty. Anyone …

Trimming your Phoenix Canariensis
by iamjv- 29 replies
- 15.5k views
This thread is meant to highlight how I go about trimming my Phoenix Canariensis (CIPD), while attempting to get that Pineapple look. The first step that I take in trimming up my CIPD is to trim away the lower hanging fronds. I typically cut away enough to give the fronds a “fountain look”, I think this helps in getting that pineapple look that most people seems to like. From the shot below I'd trim away two or three rows of fronds, reevaluating the look as I go along.

You do not want to see this on your palms

This afternoon I was heading out the door and saw this colorful caterpillar on my Ptychosperma. I was upset, to put it mildly! I have seen these really destroy plants. I had to put it down, and it put up quite a struggle. Butterflies I love, but they should metamorphose elsewhere

¿Pseudophoenix sargentii or vinifera?
by migacebo- 12 replies
- 3.3k views
Hello, last Friday I found this specimen in a nursery nearby. I think it may be a Pseudophoenix sargentii, but I'm not sure. The Pseudophoenix sargentii and vinifera look very similar at this stage of growth. Provide some photos if someone wants to comment on his identification. Incidentally, the best price: 20 euros. I would appreciate any information on crop growth ranges, fertilizer needs, etc.. I know you must have a substrate very draining and irrigation should be more scarce, especially in winter. He likes the sun and resists salinity and wind as a few. Its growth is slow. Well, I am listening to. A greeting

Just getting ready to put a trio into the ground and would really like to see some pictures and/or hear from some folks that have seen a nice grouping in order to get the spacing right on my three. As an FYI, my C. macrocarpa are about 4' tall (with a nice trunk already) & 2' tall respectively and my hookeri is about 2' tall (I also have a very small C. macrocarpa but will probably plant it eleswhere). Thanks... Tim

Areca macrocalyx
by Tyrone- 27 replies
- 4.4k views
Areca macrocalyx is a beautiful solitary palm from the New Guinea highlands where it grows to 5280 ft in habitat. Reportedly it needs less heat than the lowland varieties and does well in So Florida. This is one species I'd love to get my hands on one day, and try in my own garden as Areca catechu does fine for me, and that one is a lowland palm. What is really wonderful about this palm is the pinkish reddish crownshaft, similar to the red form A vestiara but more pink. Who is growing this one? What experiences do people have growing it, and do you have any pictures of it? Best regards Tyrone

Orange Crush Germination
by corkycory- 6 replies
So today i ventured into my closet and i briefly looked at me orange crush containers which i have had for almost a year (the ones Bo sold ) and had almost given up on. Well i noticed a container full of little stems...or leafs..(?) well the thing is all of them are a yellowish color, is that right? I usually provide a visual with my palm questions but the camera appears to be lost around this time.. and if the yellowish color is fine what should i do with my little orange crushes i.e. what kind of pot, shade, water etc... Thanks in advanced and thanks again Bo for selling the seeds for such a great deal :DDD
