Seedling leaf damage
by freddyuk- 1 reply
I have several seedlings where the second and third leaf appears lacy as if insects damage has occured before the leaf opened. Some leaves seem to have trouble unfurling and with a bit of help they quickly unfurl and the damage along the ribs is obvious. Hard to see any insect life or pupa cases. Should i just spray with insecticide or something else.

Kill a Washie -- hate to do it
by DoomsDave- 12 replies

Howdyall: My infamous washie, by the pole is still there, and teh power company will only trim off leaves taht touch the wires, but not kill the palm by beheading it. I was advised rather snarkily by Lily Tomlin over at the power company that "You can, of course, hire a licensed contractor yourself." One ringy-dingy! The problem is that the power company cuts the leaves off and leaves a huge mess and I'm tire of it. I want the hassle to stop, and I'm NOT paying a "licensed contractor." Thankyou no thankyou. It's got a trunk about 20 feet (6.6 m) tall, way too big to get up there and pour some poison in the top. I've thought about pounding copper nails, or …

Ok here is a little off the wall subject. GFP green florescent protien taken from jelly fish and injected in plants to track disease. Has anyone tried this here? I am willing to give it a try, any others out there with the now how? We have the university of washington close by who extract GFP from the Jelly fish up here. Unfortunately the photos are not posting at the moment. I will post some photos later. You can go on Youtube and type in GFP and it will show videos of glow in the dark mice and glow in the dark rabbits. With the recent disease attacking palms in florida. GFP might be the answer to see what is really going on inside of the palms. Here is a link. An…

Variegated Rhapis
by Jeff zone 8 N.C.- 1 reply
For those of you who are interested in variegated Rhapis, there are some listed in the "Palm Exchange" section of this board, sold by "saipancnmi" (Mike D'Andrea of Hollywood FL). I ordered one and was very impressed with it. He shipped it fast and communicated well. He did not know the official Japanese name but said it was not a dwarf type, but rather a full sized variegated form of regular Rhapis. The variegation on mine is outstanding. I don't know Mike and usually don't post for something like this but think this was a good deal. Thanks Mike!

There has been a big road construction project in downtown Orlando where I-4 and the East West Expressway meet. Some of the new lanes have been finished and they are planting lots of palms; Phoenix canariensis, P. dactylifera, and Washingtonia robusta. I noticed that they are also planting groups of Livistona decora, Ribbon Palm. Good to see something different being used.

Plants make aspirin when sick
by sonoranfans- 1 reply
I remember reading that some members here reported using aspirin to improve immunity/health of their palms. Well now it appears that this is actually an immune system mechanism in plants. http://www.rdmag.com/ShowPR~PUBCODE~014~AC...RODLETT~DU.html So it appears that this is not only a home cooked remedy, but a natural immune response as well. Pehaps when some palms get sick, they dont produce enough of the methyl salicylate to ward off disease, so an application of aspirin can make up for a failure in immune system response.

Dypsis Oropedionis
by ellidro- 5 replies

There was some question as to whether or not the oropedionis that are going around in California are the same palm that Steve fom SD posted a pic of in his Travel Log thread. The question was asked due to the ultra plumose, irregular leaflets in Steve's palm compared to the more regular leaflets of the much smaller palms being sold in SoCal. I just took a close look at my largest oropedionis and the leaflets are definitely becoming irregular. I think the bigger these get the more irregular the leaflets will become. My thought is they are the same palm but the Hawaiin plants are much further along than the SoCal ones. Any thoughts? If you look at the leaflets you can…

Ideas for cool shade palms
by ThunderSRQ- 16 replies

As a follow-up to my recent post about planting a Chambeyronia macrocarpa/hookerii trio under live oak canopy, I wanted to ask for recommendations re: other palms that would do well in my planting area. Since this is a high profile spot (and I just like odd/unusual stuff anyway... ), I'm mainly looking for palms that are colorful and/or have a neat/unique shape, "look", or other characteristics. And, as far as mature adult size is concerned, under 20' is ideal with 30' max. growth as the upper limit. I already have quite a few small and relatively small palms slated for this front yard area (Cryosophila warscewiczii, Licuala peltata sumawongii, Kerriodoxa elegans, Dy…
