Seedling Care
by _Keith- 12 replies
- 1.1k views
My seedlings have been in the shade house (really under a Live Oak canopy) for the summer. Now that the heat is backing off and the sun angles are getting lower in the sky, would they benefit by being placed out in full sun. I'd like to get a little more growth on them before winter sets in and the growth slows to nothing. This seems reasonable, but I don't want to kill them.

Coconut and Royal Palms, downtown Orlando
by Eric in Orlando- 9 replies
- 1.8k views
I noticed this Coconut Palm the other day just east of downtown Orlando in front of an office building. It appears it was planted in the past year. Looks to be a 'Green Malayan'. It looks to be in a good microclimate. There is a big tree overhead to give it frost protection but it is high limbed so it still gets sun. There is even a few fruit forming. This Roystonea regia was planted several years ago at an apartment building near downtown. I went by it today and it looks good. anyone else itching to pull that dead leaf off?

Another Palm ID Required
by Neofolis- 5 replies

Someone has asked me to identify this palm and my first guess would be Coccothrinax crinita, but given my track record of always getting palm ID's wrong, plus the fact that the leaflets look narrower than those of C.crinita, I thought I would seek expert help here. At first I thought Trachycarpus of some kind, but the trunk doesn't really look like any pictures I've seen of any Trachycarpus.

Hawaiian Garden Virtual Reality

Here is a link to a new photographic concept I've been working on. It puts you in a full 360 degree sphere of an area in my garden. You can spin around, look up and down, zoom in, and even hear the birds if your speakers are up. It may be a little tricky to "drive" around at first, and it's so real you may even get dizzy. Try reading the brief instructions if you have difficulty. It is really quite easy once you get the hang of it. I think there is much potential with this concept. I hope to make many improvements, and use it to share any gardens I visit. Feedback will be appreciated. I am most curious about how it displays on differing computers, browsers, and s…

Find the bare root Butiagrus...
by pg6922- 2 replies

May of 2008 I spotted a large Butia Capitata dropping seed within 10ft of a Queen palm dropping seed. I figured there was a chance some of the seeds would turn out to be Mules. 4 months later this is what I have. Sphagnum moss in a 1g ziplock was the method of choice. They have been popping sporadically for over a month now and still going. It is amazing the difference in the size and growth characteristics of these seeds. All have taken well to being potted up and have been growing steadily. I potted these up tonight and noticed two that really stood out with massive roots compared to the others. All of these are from the same Butia palm. I have gotten 4 dou…

PRS....Palm Related Score!
by TikiRick- 9 replies
I have written about my continual problem with huge iguanas coming off the waterway and into my garden. They LOVE hibiscus, caladium, iris, and a variety of other shrubs. I have no more of the former since they had their Thanksgiving dinner early this year. I have not had any problems with them eating palms, however. (Thankfully!) Now, they are more of a nuisance and can be a bit intimidating since one bad boy is about 5' long. So, I came across this Palm Related Score and decided to join 'em. This is about life size! It is made from an old oil drum and was handcrafted in Haiti. It is about 4.5' long and I couldn't pass it up for a whopping $25.00. It's new home …

Inflorescence and seeds
by Bags- 3 replies
- 1.5k views
I have a few questions about palms that I am sure there are more than a few experts that can help me out. Thanks in advance for the help. 1. I understand that the inflorescence is how a palm is ID. Are the flowers the same for every genus of palms? For example does every Dypsis inflorescence look similar but each species have a subtle variation. How does the inflorescence ID the palm? 2. I have heard people talking about cutting open seeds to identify if they are one type or another. What is this refering to? P.S. Her is a pic of my yard from the begining of summer. It has come a long way since and I plan on posting the rest some time soon. Thanks again, …

Digging a Trachycarpus fortunei

Any special advice for digging up a 10 foot overall Trachy? My brother in law just dug up a few and he got decent sized root balls. They have not been watered in a long time and the root ball is completely dry. Should he keep them on the dry side? Keep 'em wet? Any advice is appreciated.

Dypsis ID again! 1 2
by ellidro- 45 replies
- 3.3k views
Here's a palm that I've had for a few years now and I still have no idea what it is. The seed came in around 2001 as Dypsis Ambositrae which clearly it is not. The guy who germinated these also had some real Ambositrae in the same batch. He said the seeds looked identical and could only tell a few years later it was a different palm. This has been one of the fastest Dypsis I've grown and always looks dark green and healthy. My guess is this palm is in the Baronii complex but it's definately different than the "regular" baronii's going around. Any guesses?

ID Quiz

This is not really an ID quiz because I just can't remember the species of most of these palms. These are all part of the famous "Hermínio Simões" collection, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I took lots of pictures there but now I can only ID some 50% of them. I guess he is growing over 500 species of palms and several dozen different Cycads at his property in the Serra do Mar. Help ID please folks: # 1:

some ID needed
by fiji jim- 13 replies

Hi All, Once again we have been reorganising the shadehouses and out with the older seedlings to make room for the new borne. Some of these I had identified before and would like to confirm them now that they are older and showing more of their true characteristics. Firstly here is one that since very young has been showing a new bronze leaf for a week or two until the next spear starts to show. Any ideas to any of these identities would be greatly appreciated as most of these were only 1 or 2 successes from many seed.
