   OK- As many of you have read, I actually PLANTED some palms this summer! I am gonna post a thread of my PLANTED palms! Anyway, would you like to see the pics of the plants as tarted up as I can make them (i.e. teeny weeds pulled, scissor cut the burnt tips) or just post with "most of the stuff" out of the way.    Looking at a photo of Dypsis sp. (White Petiole) on Dave's Garden (palm at Floribunda Jeff's garden?) and the PACSOA website showing Dypsis albofarinosa (described as, ".. medium sized, thin stemmed clustering palm with nearly pure white crownshafts..") it is clearly not the same as the sturdy, solitary palm with V-shaped, recurved leaves photographed in Jeff's Marcus' garden. The Floribunda price list refers to Dypsis albofarinosa as formerly, "Dypsis sp. (White Petiole)" but the PACSOA website shows a Dypsis albofarinosa that appears to be a completely different palm, and makes no mention of it's former name, only that it's common names are, White Petiole Palm, White Po…

   Throughout last winter I found many of my rare palms were having fronds eaten off, or in some cases for seedlings, the entire palm was eaten. Not knowing what was doing this, I placed some rat poison in the area with no effect. This winter the damage is continuing, and I am 99% sure it is a possum (or 2 or 3) which is eating my palms. Does anyone have any successful ways of catching or stopping them damaging my palms? It (or they?) also have excellent taste in palms (unfortunately for me), going after Dypsis prestoniana (my first one and its replacement this year), Dypsis 'ovobontsira', Dypsis 'canaliculata', some different Ceroxylons, Caryota himalayana and a few…

   The other night I was repremanded for the use of the H*** word. I've noticed that our moderator's girlfriend goes by the name of "Putu Angula".    This Pritchardia hillebrandii "blue dwarf " shown below is from the very first palm seeds I attempted to germinate in early 2004. Living in Northeastern Brazil, with not many diversified palm nurseries around, made me consider trying to learn more about cultivation from seed and this curiosity led me to find the IPS website and the Palmtalk forum some five years ago.     I put together two more full 360 Panoramas and linked them to the one I already did. Now you can look for a "Hot Spot" on the original one, and when clicked on it takes you to another complete panorama from that location. You will have to look for the "Hot Spots" with your mouse. When you find one you will know it, and then just click on it. Hint: From this starting location, go down to the right of the house for the first Hot Spot. Once you enter that panorama, the second one is in the same general direction, just further along. You can turn around and return as well. HAWAIIAN GARDEN PANORAMA

    What to do about Queen Palms?

    So I have four queen palms in a planter in my back yard. It is definite a focal point of the garden. Anyway, I want to incorporate other palms and plants into the planter and am thinking about the future. Will I be in a situation where the queen palms (when they seed) will be creating a big mess for me? And are my smaller palms and tropical plants in danger from falling fronds? Also, since they are not self cleaning, am I looking an unneeded expense when they get too large for me to trim myself? OR, have I become a palm snob and these issues are not really issues at all?     As its the first week of spring I have removed the portable hothouse, lipstick looks like winter never happened as did the grandis. I expect we will get some nights of 8C to 10C in the next couple of weeks but that should be it till next winter. This winter has been the coldest and longest for many years and I did lose one of my palms which was the Gronophyllum pinangoides. The betel nut has quite abit of black spotting but still managed to push out acouple of frons. The coconut also took a beating with considerable black spotting. Both of these palms are now exposed to the cold winters winds due to there size, over 30feet. I also did a garden make over for those of you…

    I got seed from a Elaeis guineensis about 5 years ago (seed was on ground under palm). This is the plant the seed produced.It produces 2 new leaves per year. The palm looks like a Caryota to me. What do you think? Elaeis? Caryota? something else?

    Ok, so its another "look at my chambey opening a new leaf" thread, but its my first one and I've been waiting since April 1st when I planted it in the ground for it to open a leaf. All I can say is that it was worth every penny. I see now why the common name is "Flame thrower palm" "red leaf" palm is kind of boring. Thanks to Justin and Derek at Seabreeze palms for offering such a fine specimen. Anyways, enjoy what God has created. PG just a peak on Day 1 Day 3 ready for a frame

    Acanthophoenix germination

    Just wondering if anyone has succeeded in germinating any of the three Acanthophoenix species. I've tried myself with zero success. They certainly are no Dypsis, Archontophoenix, or Carpoxylon for ease of germinating? Can anyone enlighten me with success stories so I can figure out where I'm going wrong?     I have noticed interesting little horns on Butia seeds that I collected from one of our local parks... Can anyone help me with ID? The seeds are on average 17 mm long and 14 mm in diameter. The plants I collected them from are on the photo below. Thanks, Marian
