newly planted groupings of Livistona decora in downtown Orlando
by Eric in Orlando- 0 replies
There has been a big road construction project in downtown Orlando where I-4 and the East West Expressway meet. Some of the new lanes have been finished and they are planting lots of palms; Phoenix canariensis, P. dactylifera, and Washingtonia robusta. I noticed that they are also planting groups of Livistona decora, Ribbon Palm. Good to see something different being used.

Dear friends I need once more your help please for three other palms I am growing: I am sure ID won't be a problem for the experts. The first one is a fan palm with smooth petioles. The fans are irregularly divided; so far no trunk visible; slightly costapalmate fan; about 1m tall. Thanks Mpiodi

All of these lumping and changing has really confused me And there is so little information around for these rarer species . Now for some strange reason I thought this was pleurocarpum , when the tag was for ledermannianum DUH , I did not even really look at the tag until I just got some delivered that I thought were going to be another sp. Now does anyone have a picture of a H.ledermannianum seedling ? I have posted a pic of what I got recently .. here is another one .

Plants make aspirin when sick
by sonoranfans- 1 reply
I remember reading that some members here reported using aspirin to improve immunity/health of their palms. Well now it appears that this is actually an immune system mechanism in plants. http://www.rdmag.com/ShowPR~PUBCODE~014~AC...RODLETT~DU.html So it appears that this is not only a home cooked remedy, but a natural immune response as well. Pehaps when some palms get sick, they dont produce enough of the methyl salicylate to ward off disease, so an application of aspirin can make up for a failure in immune system response.

Dypsis Oropedionis
by ellidro- 5 replies

There was some question as to whether or not the oropedionis that are going around in California are the same palm that Steve fom SD posted a pic of in his Travel Log thread. The question was asked due to the ultra plumose, irregular leaflets in Steve's palm compared to the more regular leaflets of the much smaller palms being sold in SoCal. I just took a close look at my largest oropedionis and the leaflets are definitely becoming irregular. I think the bigger these get the more irregular the leaflets will become. My thought is they are the same palm but the Hawaiin plants are much further along than the SoCal ones. Any thoughts? If you look at the leaflets you can…

Ideas for cool shade palms
by ThunderSRQ- 16 replies

As a follow-up to my recent post about planting a Chambeyronia macrocarpa/hookerii trio under live oak canopy, I wanted to ask for recommendations re: other palms that would do well in my planting area. Since this is a high profile spot (and I just like odd/unusual stuff anyway... ), I'm mainly looking for palms that are colorful and/or have a neat/unique shape, "look", or other characteristics. And, as far as mature adult size is concerned, under 20' is ideal with 30' max. growth as the upper limit. I already have quite a few small and relatively small palms slated for this front yard area (Cryosophila warscewiczii, Licuala peltata sumawongii, Kerriodoxa elegans, Dy…

by mari- 6 replies
- 1.3k views
I just received some palm tree seeds from Orantique because I joined PalmTalk. What a great program!!! Now, I recieved the following: 10 seeds Sabal Mexicana 10 seeds Copernica Alba 5 seeds Archontophoenis purpurea 3 seeds Beacariophonis alfredii 10 seeds Dypsis mananjerensis If all of the seeds germinate I will have a nice small palm nursery on my hands. I am not familar with Beacariophonis alfredii and Dypsis mananjerensis. I did some internet searches on these palms and found little to no information on these palms. Can someone tell me more about these palms, like their habitat and experience as far as cold hardiness, germination speed and growth rate…

Last week I posted an update photo of my very odd F2 xButyagrus, posted below again. I just noticed that it it flowering for the first time. Should I try to cross pollinate it now, or wait another year when it matures a little more? I noticed with other species the first flowering cycle is usually not that successful. Gary The Flower

Another PRA, Palm Beach style
by Ken Johnson- 8 replies

It was wonderful to meet up with Bubba and Sur4Z today in Palm Beach. i have been delivering some palms to this new garden down the street from Bubs office. These guys came over at lunch time to check it out. Funny how things work out as this garden had some sculptures ( yes the same as in the giant ant post). Turns out this client is the son of the lady that MAKES these giant insects. Small world. There is more to the story but that will be another day. This pic shows that Bubbalouie was still under the influence of the last PRA as He was pontificating immediately about the wonders of human achievement and its conflicts with nature. ( or some thing like that!) BTW …
