A neighbour gave me this. I think the seed came from Equador. Does well in our cool Auckland climate. Leaves remind me of Swallows. Trunk is tan coloured and about an inch in diameter. No flowers yet. No signs of suckering (trunk is about a foot high). Any ideas? cheers Richard

Planting a few palms in Amazonia
by amazondk- 21 replies

I have been getting a few palms in the ground at our place in Paricatuba. The rainy season is coming and things should start taking off well. The work on the bridge over the Rio Negro is progressing. Since the river is at it's lowest level the ferry boat has delays loading and unloading. All of the bricks and roofing tiles sold in Manaus come from the other side of the river and the trucks hauling the material tend to have problems getting off the ferry boats and cause delays. The barge in the middle of the river in this picture is making the columns that will support the bridge. They are down into up to 54 meters of water and I am not sure how far into the grou…

Second Area Needing Planting Idea
by _Keith- 5 replies
Again, sorry for poor photo and deceiving angle. The red line is 55 feet long. This edging bricks are outlining where my future circular drive will pass. Just to the inside (right) of that is a large grassy area with a fountain in the middle. You can see my large Butia towards the bottom of the picture. Then a small Mule Palm, the future sidewalk coming through, then another Mule Palms on the other side, and a small double trunk Butia behind that. At the top of that line is a combo planting of a W. robusta and a L. chinensis close to the base. So, along this 55 foot red line I am envisioning a line of palms. But what? Wake up those creative juices …

Chamaedorea klotzschiana

First, I must start by apologizing that these seeds were sent to me by someone on this board, but I have misplaced my notes on by whom. So, here are my questions. 1. What is cold hardiness on this palm? 2. How much longer can they remain in this community pot? Remember winter is coming here so growth will slow to nill. 3. Any other information? Pictures of juvenile and mature specimens? 4. Did you send them to me? If so, thank you again, and let me know so I can give you appropriate recognition. Keith

Kris has mentioned that his residence provides the ideal temperature for germinating seeds. It has probably been discussed previously. But, what do you do to provide the correct temperature? A light bulb comes to mind, but Kris says that a dark environment is best.

I need expert advise asap! Ike decided to visit my little piece of paradise, and left me a nice present. Now, I need to know what to do to save some of these palms. I know some of them need to be uprighted but, um, im gonna need something larger than 1 person to move some of these!! what can I do if anything to help these trees survive and at least have a fighting chance. Or is it just hopeless and I need to rip em all out and start over again? all of these palms had at least a foot of pure saltwater surge around them, with some of them taking on 3 ish feet. Making matters worse we werent allowed home for ~2 weeks after Ike and only just a few days ago got wa…

Most of the day was spent attending to Mom's more pressing needs. Cel cleaned the yard removed water from the leaks inside, while I nailed tarps onto the roof. But,,,,,,, When I got home today, there was a few minutes to begin the righting. As usual it pays to be prepared. I had purchased a 300' roll of webbing a few months back from Forestry Supply. This stuff is great from fastening plants and much easier on them than using a rope. My only regret is not purchasing the 3000' roll. Here is subject 1 before and after

I planted two Sabal Minors this past April. One plant is looking well; however, the other does not look so healthy. The spear has brown areas and has not grown out like the other. I am posting pictures of the healthy Sabal Minor and the one that has brown spots. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Palm roots
by Mark_NoVA- 5 replies

Got a scientific question: do any palms have 'taproots'? Generally, most dicots have taproot systems while most monocots have fibrous/adventitious root systems. (And palms are monocots.) Are any palms exceptions to this? I'm guessing not, but would rather know than guess!

Rhabdoscelus obscurus

I noticed today that the crown on my Phoenix canariensis looked a little fallen over. After getting the ladder and climbing 14 feet into the crown I found the culprit (palm weevils) The newest 20 leaves have been affected and now removed from the plant. The heart of the growing center of the palm looks fine. What is the next thing I should do? The same happened to this palm 4 yrs ago and I used Ortho fire ant killer (contains Orthene) and it worked. What is recommended ?l

Chamaedorea in Chiapas, MX
by Mike4284m- 4 replies

I backpacked through the Yucatan and Chiapas this summer with my sister and a few seeds somehow followed me home. Since I haven't managed to kill them yet I thought it might be time to look for an ID. I have a guess, but I also have a severe lack of knowledge when it comes to Chamaedorea. Any ideas? These were everywhere around Palenque.

Value Question about Jubaea chilensis
by Mr_Christopher- 18 replies
- 1.9k views
I have four Jubaeas that are about 6-7 years old that I have been raising since they were straps. They need to go in the ground within the next year. I don't have any place to plant them so I'm looking at selling them. They're way too big to ship (I think the pots are 45 gallon, could be 25) so I'm limited to selling to someone in north Texas (or nearby). Can anyone give me a reasonable idea of what these are worth? Thanks Chris

Florida State Tree Disease Update

DNA finds suspect in dying palm trees By Jessica Vander Velde, Times Staff Writer Published Tuesday, September 23, 2008 9:36 PM SEFFNER — After weeks spent genetically sequencing a mysterious disease that's killing Florida's state tree, the results are in: The deadly Texas Phoenix palm decline has found another victim. Researchers suspected it was killing sabal palms, but they weren't sure until the DNA results returned. Palm decline was found in Florida palms in 2006 and was previously known to kill Canary Island date palms, edible date palms, wild date palms and queen palms. Sabal palms affected by the disease have been found in Hillsborough, Manatee and,…

Potting up sizes - US style
by John in Andalucia- 5 replies

I see that a lot of nurseries move seedlings from liners to 4", to 1 gallon & 5 gallon etc. What is the volume at 4"? Is that a 4 inch square/diameter pot? I´m buying pots soon, and here in Europe a 4 litre pot is a fraction over 1 gallon. That´s fine, but what is the intermediate size? Thanks.

Dypsis decipiens
by Tyrone- 10 replies
- 1.5k views
I've had this D decipiens growing in a pot for a few years now. I bought it labeled as Ravenea robustior, and it was scale infested, and a tad unhappy. A couple of years ago it decided to split into two plants. Now it's moved so far sideways in the pot, it needed to be planted. So that's what I did out in my front yard. The mulberry tree will be removed next year to give it pride of place. Eventually the lawn will be removed, and we'll put up a front wall, and paving to make a front courtyard style garden, which D decipiens will be the centre piece.

I have six of these wonderful palm seeds and the first has just popped. What size tap root can I expect? I have my Bizzies in 18" tubes and wondered if the same would do. Any advice on cultivating P. henryana from seed would be most welcome, as I haven't grown this palm before.
