Here is the first xButiagrus with a green trunk. And the second xButiagrus with a brown trunk And my Butia x jubaea. I got all 3 from from Palmsrgreat. All were supposed to in the ground in August, but a couple of hurricanes got in the way. I put them in less than a month ago, but they should still get in a couple of good growing months before winter sets in. Actually, I can already see some growth.

I've heard a few varying opinions as to whether this palm tolerates and/or thrives in really hot conditions. After drooling all over Steve in San Diego's beauty last week I'm wondering whether it's a good choice for me here in Woodland Hills. Is there a consensus out there?

Palm ID Please???
by pg6922- 3 replies
I know these ID's can get old, but I cant for the life of me ID this clustering palm. It was $5 at Lowes and I bought it for an indoor palm for our workout room. Anyways, its not D lutescence and I'm pretty sure its not Carpentaria. Ptychosperma Sp. maybe? The one pinnate leaf has veitchia qualities. Can someone please ID it for me. Its probably so obvious that I'm just missing it. Thanks PG

Major Dypsis event
by bgl- 16 replies

Jeff Marcus asked me to post these photos. His largest Dypsis sp. Big curly (which he bought from Mardy Darian many years ago) has just produced its first inflorescence. Which means we're hopefully on the verge of getting an ID on this palm. When John Dransfield was here two months ago he believed it to be "a form of Dypsis prestoniana".

Foxy Lady help
by Bags- 9 replies
- 1.1k views
I planted this foxy lady this summer from florida and it is splitting at the base. You can see every individual leaf base splitting. There is no sign of any fungus and I have been treating it with fungicide. My question is has anyone had this problem? and if so what was the cause, did it out grow it and is there anything I need to do to help it along? Thanks for the help, Aaron Here are the pics.

Macarthur Palm (Ptychosperma macarthurii)
by Big Tex- 1 reply

I am having problems with my Macarthur Palm (Ptychosperma macarthurii). It has been indoors since we bought it in March. It sits by a large window that gets lots of morning direct sun. It has done very well until the last month. I have changed nothing so I can't imagine what is wrong with it. A fungus perhaps? Anyone have any ideas?

Pritchardia napaliensis
by Phil- 4 replies
About seven or eight years ago I visited National Tropical Botanical Garden on the Island of Kuaii. I was cruising along looking at Pritchardia and suddenly in front of me was a Pritchardia that appeared to be suckering. I got up close and indeed it was. In fact, all the plants they were growing in the ground were suckering. I immediately found Melanie Chappin (research fellow there at the time) and discussed this with her. Here's a single trunk fan palm that is suckering! This has never been described. She told me that the plants on the grounds came from several seed collecting trips to the native locality and they had noticed this behavior on almost all of them. …

Roystonea regia 'forms'
by Daryl- 13 replies
- 2.2k views
Over the years I have seen thousands of Roystonea regia. There appears to be quite a lot of variation in the species. The trunks can be different, but also the leaves. I know that the soil, water, climate and fertiliser affect their growth and appearance, but there seems to be different forms, regardless of cultivation conditions. I know there are quite a few species of Roystonea, but usually in Oz the only ones commonly cultivated are R.regia and R.oleracea. Do we have other species growing here that have been incorrectly named at some point in time or are they really just variations of the same species? Here is a photo of a form that has short stiff leaves, with …

Has Anyone Removed a Mature C. Obtusa?
by joe_OC- 13 replies

So I have been going back and forth on planting a couple of C. Obtusa in my backyard. It would definitely create a very dramatic effect to the yard, BUT I am concerned about the issues of having to remove it when it dies. This is what I have gathered: They do not live as long in S. Cal They are prone to falling The wood is very hard to cut A crane is needed for removal Is this accurate? Please correct me where I am wrong. Thanks in advance, Joe

Nicely grown D lutescens

Dypsis lutescens has always been one of my favorite palms and I had many clumps of them growing in my FL yard. They are very popular palms in Costa Rica and are planted just about everywhere. These clumps have all be trimmed up, but I think they are nearly perfect specimens. Love the powdery looking trunks
