Incredible Fall Lighting
by TikiRick- 9 replies
What an incredible day weather-wise in South Florida today! Fall is my favorite time of year...lower high temperatures and a reduced angle of the sun....very conducive to photography. As I was loving the fall day, I spent the day trimming the front garden in the setting light. Here are some shots.... And you will see, the day ended on a wonderful note from the postal carrier! A gift from India!

Does anybody remember the guy from Houston he was selling his place to finance a move to costa rica or somewhere?? I want to say he was going to try and manage a "garden" for the Houston palm society or something?? He had some big palms in the ground and I think I have a buyer for a couple of his big braheas. I just cannot for the life of me remember what his name was. Thanks Tad

Coconut growth rates
by ruskinPalms- 12 replies

My coconut has really taken off this year. I felt that it was only an average grower over the past couple years. Maybe the roots have reached down to the water table now? Anyway, I am curious how fast other people's coconuts have grown. Coconut May 2006 (with a royal and A. cunninghamiana in the background...)

Always enjoy the bloom time of the A.cunninghamiana in the backyard. The inflorescence is at eye level so it's interesting to watch the progress. I've taken these photos over the last few months and always enjoy the colorful show. The first couple of shots of the emerging and developing spathe. Tim

Archontophoenix cunninghamiana

Bought this little palm last fall on eBay. I potted it and promptly forgot it on the porch for our first freeze. Then it got blown off of the porch and stayed out of the pot roots exposed for a day. I planted it too early in the spring and it caught another light freeze. Just as it started to grow, spring winds tore it up so bad I had to mummify it to that t-post. So, it starts growing and looking good and here come the hurricanes. Again, I mummified it to the post. And yet here it is looking great again as it prepares to face its first full winter. Like the Energizer Bunny it keeps going and going. I am betting it will make it, at least till we have a "bad"…

Synchronicity

Howdyall, snapped this pic about a week ago. I was just struck by the elegant way all of the spears in the picture (well, almost all) point in the same direction, same angle, etc. Like a bunch of ballet dancers . . . .

Post Pix of your Prized Potted Palms 1 2

I sadly realize living in SA that I'll have to keep stuff in pots and move 'em indoors in winter. I've only got A.myolensis seedlings (5) on their 4th leaf, and a 3 leaf flamethrower seedling. I'd like to see picks of other "tropical" palms kept in pots in residential yards, the bigger the better! Tell it's age, what size pot you will stop repotting, what you will do then, etc. Scott

I prepped for cold season... Moved every pot and block and swept underneath... There was about 60 gallons of lost medium, fert, and leafy discard laying on the ground fabric, the prefect place for disease, fungus, and weeds to flourish! What palm activity did you do this weekend?!?

So, the topic desciption pretty much says it all. I want to plant something out of the ordinary for my locale. Tree or Palm will do, but probably tree is best in this location. I am in Zone 9a. The area is in full sun and can stay wet for long periods particulary in winter. It does dry out in spring and fall, with summer varying, but will always have a shallow water table in general. Soil is clay/loam. This part of my site is on the south side, so wind tolerance/shielding is a plus. Now, who is up for a challenge?

Hey all, There are 4 of these in a planter area that have served as a great filtered light nursery for seedlings. Earlier in the year, I noticed a definite decline in these 4 palms. Sparse crowns, numerous unopened spears & yellow spotting on many fronds give the palms a very anemic look. I think the trouble may have started post 2007 freeze, with a scale infestation I failed to notice for a while. (They're overhead so it's a bit hard to see up there without a ladder). Anyway, I've treated them with insecticides--repeatedly. Anyway, all thoughts appreciated! Bret The overall crown The base of the crown; note the spotting on the petioles Closeup of the…

Should I worry about my palms hybridizing?
by SD_Iconoclast- 8 replies
- 1.3k views
I have several large CIDPs in my yard and I have been using them as a source of seeds. I was just about to plant several other Phoenix species (sylvestris, Dactylifera, Rebelinii) with the intention using them for seeds too. Then I read all these references to "hybrids". Now I am scared. If I plant other phoeninx species in my yard, will I not be able to count on the appearance of the plants that grow from my seeds? Will I get rebelinii sized plants from my CIDPs? Will I get CIDPs from my Dactyliferas? Is there some reference material that explains what I can expect?

by _Keith- 4 replies

Here is the first xButiagrus with a green trunk. And the second xButiagrus with a brown trunk And my Butia x jubaea. I got all 3 from from Palmsrgreat. All were supposed to in the ground in August, but a couple of hurricanes got in the way. I put them in less than a month ago, but they should still get in a couple of good growing months before winter sets in. Actually, I can already see some growth.
