Sabal Palm Help - Arizona

Hi All, new member here. I’ve had this Sabal in the ground for two years now. After it was originally planted, it suffered a good deal of transplant shock but it eventually settled down and had some new growth pop up. I know they are painfully slow growers, so when it went through another summer with minimal growth, I didn’t think too much of it. However, the new frond that opened seemed to be very stunted. It opened pretty much at the base of the trunk. Then, over our “winter” I noticed the other new growth that wasn’t fully opened yet was starting to dry out and turn brown. When I inspected it, I was able to pull it right out without any effort. I noticed a faint smell …

ID help please - small palmate
by John Eve- 3 replies

Can anyone help ID this small clumping palmate? Grows to about 3 metres. This was shot in Rajapreuk Gardens, Chiang Mai, Thailand. I found a few old seeds that I thought would not be viable, but in fact I now have one shooting, and thus would like to know what I have. Thanks, John E, Hua Hin, Thailand

Xmas palm health

I bought this palm from a nursery this week and planted it a couple of days ago. It looked like this when I got it. I asked the lady what was wrong with it. and she said she didn’t know. What is this and is it recoverable? It was only $100 so I thought I would try one. There are no bugs and no mold spots. It’s my first palm. What is your advice?

Tortoise and the Hare

After doing some spring cleaning I noticed how much faster one of my livistona decora was growing than the other. Transplanted them at the same time and one is SLOW but pushing new spears and one grows faster than the weeds! Both get equal attention and same exposure. So interesting how variable they are with one growing maybe a foot and the other having grown probably 3+ feet. First picture is from today. Second is from when they were planted last April 2022. Third is at the nursery.

Nanotek 2000

I'm hoping to get some feedback from anyone who's used a product from Nanotek to treat Red Palm weevils or coconut rhinoceros beetle. I'm natural skeptical about claims from manufacturers, but someone reached out to me stating this product was amazing. Not much online, but if you've use this or any other Nanotech pesticides and had positive results let me know. It does sound too good to be true, but also bordering on a scam. Let me know

Dypsis mirabilis

Surprising you don’t see more posts about this Madagascar palm. Tall, thin, colorful, and fast growing, a small grove looks especially nice. They are variable with pinnate or entire leaves and lightly clumping. What’s more to ask for, although I have no idea how cold hardy they are. Tim

Can Chamaedorea tepejilote and Chamaedorea microspadix live in the same space for some time?
by idontknowhatnametuse- 16 replies

I got some seedlings of Chamaedorea microspadix (Over 14 seedlings) and Chamaedorea tepejilote (3 seedings), they still don't shoot out their first leaf, I planted them in 2 different pots, in a slightly bigger and deeper pot I planted 11 palms, 8 Chamaedorea microspadix and my 3 Chamaedorea tepejilote, since both of these species like the shade, can they live in the same pot for some months? I plan on transplanting the Chamaedorea microspadix into the ground when they are more developed and the Chamaedorea tepejilote (I hope its the clumping form) will go into a big pot when they start putting out pinnate leaves. The palms are planted in coco coir and it's practically sp…

Russian Palms at Their Limits 1 2

Hello Palm Lovers, While it is well known to many that lots of palms grow in Sochi, Russia, it is not the only place in the country where palms are found. If you head up the coast from Sochi, there are many palms up to the Crimean peninsula and on it, most commonly windmills, and there are also some palms a bit inland, in the city of Krasnodar. And I also found some windmill palms in the city of Derbent near the border with Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea. My first question is are there any further north locations on the Black and/or Caspian Seas where there are palms, and if so I would love to know. I know it's not Russia, but my other question is does anyone know if …

Backfilling with sand
by Palmfarmer- 2 replies
As long as the bottom of your planting hole drains fairly well backfilling with sand might be a good idea? I would imagine to roots expanding out faster, avoiding transplant shock and getting established faster. Reason I got this Idea was from Gary from Laguna. He said that when they planted the palms at LAX they backfilled them with sand and it was supposedly very common to do when planting palms at mass.

I have a Japanese palm that quickly deteriorated in 2-3 days. I owned it for close to a year. Produced a couple of leaves in its time. I water weekly and never let it sit in water. It gets plenty of light in the area. I did add miracle grow palm feed about 2-3 weeks back. Calculated at half its recommend dose

I’ve grown a fair amount of fruit trees but Euterpe Edulis is the first palm I’ve tried growing. I tried a year ago at starting one of these but I put it in a spot that was try much full sun and it died pretty quickly. In January I planted another young Euterpe Edulis palm and the leaves are starting to brown, see attached image. Is this likely an artifact of the cool/dry season? What else might cause this? What is a typical routine for planting and caring for a young palm of this species so I might do better moving forward?
