I have a Kentiopsis piersoniorum in the ground now for 3 years and it is rated as being a fast palm but man is it sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow for me. Looks fine, just not putting out new leaves as fast as I would like. Any of you have the same experience? If you are growing this whether in Hawaii, New Caledonia, Australia or where ever lmk how yours is doing, Thanks, Jeff

New purchases.....

I finally made it by to meet Clark and pickup a few rare palms from him. They are pretty small but very hard to find and very fairly priced. I picked up the following palms from him: Kentiopsis magnifica, Moratia cerifera, Dypsis "highland mealybug" & Dypsis "cote de este". I put them all in a 5 gallon container with crushed rock in the bottom of the container and put it on top of a saucer filled with crushed rock so when I water them, the excess water drains to the bottom where the rocks are. Then, as the water evaporates it will create a micro climate and increase the humidity around the palms Here are a few group shots of them. Thank…

Hello all- I'm pretty new into palms, been interested for about five years now. I live in the Mojave - high desert area where temperatures range from 10 to 110, which is why I am into the cold hardy palms. My current project in cross pollinating one of my Capitatas with a Queen. I have found and followed information that I found all over the web and have successfully harvested my first batch of Butyagrus seeds this fall. Dan

landscaping a lenai
by amazon exotics- 3 replies

We really enjoy landscaping in small planters around a pool or in a lenai because all of the palms and plants have to have a lot of color and character. The only drawback is, you have to use palms that won't get too tall and can take some sun (in some cases). Licuala grandis with Dianella tasmanica Lytocaryum wedellianum (not our best specimen, but the homeowner liked it) Another L. grandis, Chamaedorea ernesti-augustii, Allogoptera arenaria, and Ptychosperma hybrid

Shipping palms from Thailand - how should they pack them?
by Juan-Carlos- 10 replies
Hey everyone!! So I am getting a few seedlings from Thailand - I got two 12" seedlings a while back and they arrived in poor condition, the leaves where bent on one of them and the leaves where already drying in the box on both Those didn't make it. The shipper had shipped bare root, the roots where covered in Hormone and water soaked cotton, the small "root ball" wrapped in plastic. The leaves where not covered with anything and it was in a flimsy box. I suggested he ship in sturdier box this time, and that he maybe wrap the palms with paper. I also sugested he use foam or some other packing material to cussion the seedlings inside the box. How would y…

Palms in natural habitat
by Gileno Machado- 8 replies

I've done some research along the coastline of Sirinhaém in search of naturally growing palms in more remote and still undevelopped areas. Here's what I found, located some 6.5 Km (4 miles) from my property there. The area belongs to the municipalty and it is not environmentally protected yet, unfortunetly. Young people still do wild camping there in the summer and during holidays. The vegetation consists of small bushes among the sand dunes. The wind is strong and the soil very poor in nutrients, submitted to eolic erosion. Salt spray is eternal... Here's the site:

Manicaria saccifera ... Any tips?
by Juan-Carlos- 9 replies
- 4.7k views
Hey everyone from Sunny Miami Florida! I need Germination Tips!!! So Saturday afternoon I found a Manicaria saccifera seed the drifted to one of our many beaches. I am looking forward to growing this species - But can not find any information on germination methods. I have only one seed so you can see why I want to do things right! If you know anything about germinating this species please post!! Furthermore, is this a rare species? I found a couple sites saying that it is rare, but in reality many common plants are sometimes labeled as rare - do I have a gem here or just another weed? LOL!! Kindest Regards, -Jc Miami, Florida

Nypa fruticans yellowing out
by Mike4284m- 8 replies

Anybody growing Nypa out there have issues with yellowing? Mine are 1-2 years old and all are showing some degree of yellowing on new growth. I was afraid to fertilize them when they were small but I finally added some palm fertilizer with minors and some added magnesium. I guess we'll see if that helps.

First off, let me just say that Bo & his wife Karolyn are two of the nicest people you could ever meet! They were very warm & inviting and eager to share their home & garden with us. Thanks again Bo!! With that said the pictures shall commence! There are over 20 pictures that I will post so I am not going to name each species. Some will be obvious to most of you and some won't. I'll fill in some blanks per request and I'm sure Bo will too as I'm not sure of all of the species & I don't want to get it wrong First off, Bo, me & his two dogs Orville & Wilber

Serenoa repens. Why it's so slow?
by Alberto- 1 follower
- 1.8k views
For me Serenoa repens is very slow. I read it needs a kind of Rhyzobium that helps it grow in the poor sandy soil were it is native. Is it because of this specific lack that mine are slow or is this normal for this palm? How cultivated palms grow outside natural habitat? Here is my best performing Serenoa that is now +-five and half years old. They are growing in sandy acid soil.

Trachys at 4000 feet (1219 meters)
by realarch- 10 replies

I was in Volcano, Hawaii a few weeks back and saw these Trachys in a friends yard. You don't see many palms in Volcano so I was surprised to see how many and how robust they were. Made me think of Banana Joe's posts a few weeks back. I'd like to find a Ceroxylon for them to see how it would do. It's usually pretty chilly at night and they probably get close to 150" (3810 mm) or more a year of rain. Tim
