Neighbors present
by Gileno Machado- 24 replies
- 1.4k views
Our neighbours from France/Spain are back in Sirinhaém for a few weeks now. They've seen and enjoyed my palms and really wanted to diversify their pool landscape, as they had planted only a few more dwarf coconuts in line last year. Their garden gets a lot of direct saltspray and some sand during the storms, mainly in the winter.

What Attalea is this
by brodklop- 4 replies

I picked up a few Attalea seeds from Townsville a year ago. A.butyracea and A.cohune where clearly labeled but a 3rd one the label was illegible. I know this is a hard ask, but can anyone tell from the seedling and the seed what it is. The seeds of the others where a fare bit smaller. seedling 1 year from seed collection till now. I had 2 but 1 died.

California Cocos.... 1 2

I've been away from the board for awhile, but wanted to share some pics of my coconut. It's been outdoors coming up on two years. I really wanted to get in in the ground this year - even have a southern facing spot ready to go - but wasn't able to coordinate with others to help me out (it's planted in a whiskey barrel with pure sand - gotta be 400 pounds or so). Anyways, took these pics a couple of days ago. It's done really well this summer, I've had it on a drip system and it's really been happy (wish I had a red sneaker for scale) - I've cut back the water this week and will probably shut it down soon. This sucker has to get in the ground this spring.... anyon…

Basselinia deplanchei trip
by MatNC- 34 replies
- 1.5k views
Hi all, As I already said you in another topic I hiked few days ago near Tontouta (International Airport) to take a look at some Basselinia deplanchei. This was not an easy trip. It took me 5H20. I walked just 9Km but climbed 900m. After 30min I already took 250m in elevation and just 1Km. Under full sun. No forest here. nothing to eat and was short in water (2.7L when I start) when I came back to my 4x4. I was walking on a very old track created for a very old power line. And everything was not used since 70's. I was hiking on little rocks rolling under my feet. definitely not comfortable. Coming back to the car via this track was not the most easy too. here is…

Plantskydd

Newbie here with my first post, wondering if anyone has any direct experience with Plantskydd? Here's some background. I am about to undertake a border planting of butia capitata at my property in Yucca Valley, CA. This is a Mojave "joshua tree woodland" plant community and is unfortunately rabbit central, something I did not fully appreciate until I transplanted some w. robusta volunteer seedlings a few weeks ago. Anyway, I returned one week after the transplant (I don't live there full-time) to find no evidence of the washies other than dried portions of roots that had been pulled up. Not a frond or stem in sight. I found droppings that match those of desert cotto…

I have a friend in Fla. who is a nursury man, but not a palm person. He sent me seeds of two palms he could not identify. Here are three pictures of the first. Any idea what it might be? He sent more seeds than I can use so I'm willing to share. Wai`anae Steve 01.bmp 01b.bmp 01c.bmp

Strange Place for a Palm Tree
by Wai`anae Steve- 6 replies

While exploring the middle section of Makaha Valley (O`ahu) a few months ago one of my friends found some Phoenix palms growing on what looked like what use to be a man made mound. They are on the south side of the valley at about 800' elevation in what today is the middle of NO WHERE. A little higher in elevation are some rock walls and terraces which we have not really explored. There are 4 palms planted quite close together and from the size I'd guess they are over 50 years old. Here is a picture. It's a "long" vertical panorama.

Splitting Dypsis ?!?
by palmcurry- 11 replies
- 1.1k views
Recently I was in San Juan, PR and spotted these palms outside a walgreens store. I am 99% sure that they are Dypsis because of the petioles but then again the trunks look more like another species. I've never heard of Dypsis palms splitting and having multiple crownshafts. But I'm still a rookie. Have you ever seen this splitting in palms before?

8A/8B Palm Heaven
by buffy- 2 replies

OK. No pictures yet. I'll take some tomorrow. I'm in the process of developing my little Mecca of sorts. I live in the Piney Woods of East Texas, so therefore, we have upland pine forest down to cypress swamps. My little piece of heaven is in the middle of town (not a city, just a town). My neighborhood was built in the 1930s and is all original old growth pine and hardwood forest, undulating through small sand hills. Looking down using Google Earth, you can barely make out any houses. The lots are good sized at 0.5 to 1 acre. My lot is on a the side of a hill. The property has 30 feet of elevation change. The soil is rich sandy loam covering red/iron ore clay. I could…

Bismarckia Beach

Here is a nice specimen of Bismarckia nobilis at EPCOT, next to the Mexican pavillion. There were White Ibis lounging underneath. I thought this was a prime specimen. Here are 2 tall specimens at EPCOT. The 2nd photo was taken in Nov. 2004. They had just been planted a few months before then got beat up by 3 hurricanes in Aug. and Sept. 2004. The smallest has since died and the other 2 have grown rapidly.

Palm Hearts

I was munching on a delicious salad today and was pleasantly surprised that it had ooooooo so magnificently flavored hearts of palm within it. This got me thinking, what other great parts of palm could I endeavor in? I really love the acai berry which tingles my tastebuds and I can't wait until I get to try the sago palm meal when I visit the highlands of new guinea. Any of you guys have any other secrets about palms to eat? After that salad all my palms look like tender little morsels just waiting to be mowed bruda cuz, Ken

Bismarckia nobilis

Hello, Palm Lovers, One blessedly dry sunny day, I took my new camera to Cape Harbour. There I saw a lovely Bismarckia that was seeding. We have a lot of Bizzies in Cape Coral but most that I have seen don't flower and seed. I'm considering picking a few from this palm unless gardeners hack off the inflorescene. What color are ripe Bizzie seeds?
