Archontophoenix purpurea

Phils info in his thread got me wondering if what I has is really A. purpurea as it was labeled when I bought it. It definitely has ramenta on the trunk and petiole, but none to be found on leaflets. Here are the shots.

Seedling Care
by carolinapalms- 9 replies

I potted several seedlings about 4 weeks ago. I was thinking about giving them a little Alaska Fish Fertizler. The bottle states that this should be used during the growing season. Is it a good idea to use this now? I believe that some people on this forum have stated that this product contains Humic Acid. Is that correct?

Hey Guys and Gals I am visiting Hawaii for the first time in a couple of weeks and am looking for any tips on gardens or cool palms to check out while I am there. I will be visiting Oahu, Maui and Kauai. Unfortunately I am not going to the big Island and will not be able to checkout Bo's garden or any of the other awesome gardens of the famed Leilani estates. I am going with my wife and 3 yr old so no hardcore backcountry. Thanks in advance. Oscar

Hello! I recently got some Prestoea acuminata var. montana seeds which actually all came germinated but were already starting to show problems...I potted them all up individually in plastic water cups(with holes drilled on the bottom) and with another plastic cup underneath to keep things clean as they were all destined for my windowsil.I watered them all up very thoroughly and positioned them on my windowsil, where i keep my most tender palms that germinate in winter, for their first winter.I also keep there any small palm i want to give special attention and to date, hadnt lost any palm placed there.Anyway,in the next few days, most showed some spear browning and it was …

I moved
by Matt in SD- 34 replies

I think that anyone that might have noticed I haven't been posting much probably already knows what's been going on, but we finally took the plunge and moved to a bigger piece of land. My wife and I (and kids) had been looking for a couple years, but were also not totally sure we really wanted to move. We spent 7 years at our old house, 5 ½ of those obsessively landscaping. I really love what is now my “old garden”, but we were already running out of space. We also wanted to move closer to work and my kids school, and wanted a bigger house. So we lucked out; bid on a ridiculously priced bank owned house and got it, and then there was no turning back. Moving has be…

I knocked off work early on Saturday, so had a spare hour up my sleeve and decided to do one of Dave's drive by photo palmalogues... These photos are of palms in my local neighbourhood on the Gold Coast hinterland, taken from in the car. We live amongst small hills, which give good coastal views People don't even put their watering cans away...that's a real slow way to water your acreage... Archontophoenix are very popular garden trees here These are Alabangs Looking in the other direction over the local mountains...variegated Metrosideros Foxtails are popular as well As are Royals and Golden Canes Moving further up t…

Foxtail
by Big Tex- 24 replies

I noticed today there is about a 6" vertical split in the base of my foxtail's trunk. I'm not sure how this happened or even when. Is there any thing that I should do for this? Perhaps the 90w spot light I had at the base to protect it from the cold got the trunk too hot?

I am interested in buying this palm, but I can't seem to identify it. It does not have a heel. The new emergent leaf is supposed to be a "deep wine" color. Here are four pics of the palm, I hope someone can identify it for me: Thanks in advance, Joe

Separating young Washy's
by Musi- 12 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi All, I am new to this palm thing and started with my first bunch of palms, Washingtonia Robusta's and a few Canary Date Palms. I bought the Washy's in a 5 trunk pot, they were about 3 to 4 years old and 60 cm / 23 inches high, I separated them by hand and repotted them each in new pots. And now after about one and a half week they still seem to be green and strong, although some have gained more yellowish color on the lower leaves. How long do I have to wait before I know for sure the Washy's survived the separation?
