Help AQIS have my seeds!
by Jonathan- 18 replies
- 1.4k views
The lovely folks at Australian Quarantine Inspection Service in Sydney have nabbed my seed order of Ceroxylon parvifrons, Hyphaene coriacea, Pritchardia hillebrandii and Dypsis onilahensis from RPS and want to heat treat them "at 60C until pericarp is dry". Will the seeds still be viable? I really fear the worst for the Ceroxylon in particular....if I'd realized the pericarp was still attached I probably wouldn't have bothered, knowing how strict our import regs. are. What a bummer getting 4 species with pericarps on in one order! They havn't done it yet so any advice or thoughts on how to deal with this? Cheers, Jonathan

Borassodendron machadonis
by PalmatierMeg- 11 replies

Hello palm lovers, Last week a fellow Palmtalk member (thanks, Sean) messaged me about a shipment of Borassodendron machadonis to the HD in S. Ft. Myers. Yesterday I ventured out to see them & ended up buying one. It gets large but is slow growing. The fronds are a lovely emerald green, could be mistaken for Licuala fronds. Very cool. This morning I took some photos, even though the wind was gusting (yet another cold front on the way). Enjoy, Meg

Pest or disease?
by quaman58- 13 replies

Hey all, I previously posted some images about this issue I have on Phoenix robellini. There are 4 plants affected & it is getting worse. These plants are probably 12 years old at a minimum. The crowns are sparse, there are numerous unopened fronds. At first glance it looks like an awful scale infection. But upon close inspection it does not appear to be scale. There's a gritty, coarse residue that covers the new fronds as they emerge. I simply can't see anything alive in it. The leaves and petioles develope a brown/ orange spotting. I'm pretty sure it will ultimately be fatal. I know that Phoenix are "a dime a dozen" type of palm, but obviously having an unexplained…

Snapped a photo of this palm in Ecuador and I have no idea what it might be and have never seen anything quite like it. Interesting growth habit. There were several others in the river town of Coca. I'm sure someone can ID it. Tim

toxicity of palm fruits
by Geoff- 5 replies
I know Arenga an Caryota fruits are pretty toxic with all their oxylates... but I just read several sources saying the fruits of Chamaedorea seifrizii are very toxic. Yet I can find nothing actually written about their toxicity other than these general statements. Does anyone happen to know if this is the case? The reason I am questioning it is because one of the sources was claiming the leaves were toxic, too, and I know that's false.

My Pinanga Coronata (old kuhlii) threw a tipple new leaf colour display. A few years back I had it as an indoor plant and the main stem was to tall to fit in the house so I cut it off and the suckers power on.

Hello all, I have acquired some fox tail palm seeds and I would like to plant them. As you can see they are green, are they too young to germinate? I've cut one open and it looks fine to me. Should I plant them now or wait till the seeds dry? If its ok to plant them now what type of mixture should I use? TIA

Chamaedorea radicalis (tree form)
by buffy- 20 replies

Phil at JungleMusic sent me a wonderful large Chamaedorea radicalis (tree form). May I add it was fabulously packed and shipped. Well anyway, I'm looking at this beauty and notice two spear-like meristems measuring 18" tall and 6" tall shooting up close to the main meristems. I didn't think C. radicalis was a clumper. Does this perhaps have some C. microspadix blood?

Phoenix questions
by mpiodi- 30 replies
- 1.7k views
I learned meanwhile in Palmtalk that ID of Phoenix is always problematic. However, growing different Phoenix in my nursery and my yard I would be curious to get a clearer idea what I have. Can you help me? The first one is already a bit advanced in age. It recently thinned it out, removed some of the nomerous suckers and got some painful stitchs by its terrible spines. Is this a (pure?) Phoenix reclinata? What do you mean?

A stroll along Ft. Lauderdale Beach at sunset

I rushed over to Ft. Lauderdale beach (about a mile away) to take some shots of the year's largest and most spectacular full moon...but it was shrouded in clouds most of the time. Here's some shots of the beach and my (and Mark Heath's!) most favorite palm, the coconut.

Sabal palmetto

Just thought I would do a little spotlight on this often ignored native of Florida. I have collected some pictures of this palm growing in various habitats and will add more as I find it growing in different areas. Feel free to add your own pics of Sabal palmetto. I'll warn everyone that this is going to be pretty photo intensive and not for the faint of heart (or light of bandwidth) and there will be some pictures that may not have sabals in them just for the heck of it. Probably could have put this in the travel log section but...meh... On Tampa Bay at EG Simmons park in Ruskin: Picture of Tampa I think: Beach?

What seeds are these?
by Gileno Machado- 13 replies

I've been looking for seeds of these 3 species for a long time and I had no idea what they looked like. Their size and shape are very distinct. The bigger ones and midsize are from the same genus. The smaller ones come from the same common habitat. Anyone would like to take a guess? (smaller coin, 50 centavos, is apox. same size of american nickel, for scale) Thanks

My drive to work includes an infected Coconut
by TikiRick- 15 replies

For weeks now, I have been driving by this coconut palm growing in a field alone. It is surrounded by grass and weeds and it first caught my attention when it started dropping it's seed prematurely. This is one of the first signs of lethal yellowing....abortion of premature seeds. Secondly, the lower fronds began to yellow. Frond by frond, it was in a steady decline to the textbook sign of Lethal Yellowing...the fronds holding at 10:00 to 2:00. These pictures were taken about 6 weeks following when I first noticed the seed abortion. I will probably take another 4 weeks or so until the entire remaining fronds are dead and the crown collapses. Unfortunately, we sti…

I have started experimenting with different types of palm seeds, mostly the phoenix genus. But what I noticed there is always a big difference in growth between a few seedlings from the same specie, some germinate easily and grow very fast and other germinate very difficult and their growth is much slower. Does this also mean these seedling will also become faster growing palms later in maturity or will the slower ones just catch up?

Jeff, while I am sure your wrapped up at the TPIE show, I did take time from hanging out at my subtropical palm paradise and while prowling around I found an old palm journal in a super fat stack of amazing ultra original palm journals from as far back as vol. 1 issue 1. seems to me you mentioned you were looking for a certain lil some something, ring me up and let me know if this floats your boat!! meanwhile I will be lounging in my armchair basking in the glorius spring like weather we have here in The magical RIO GRANDE VALLEY, which is in TEXAS, and while not as palmy as south florida or madagascar is still a really swell place to lounge in a big comfy armchair …

Pruning palm roots before repotting
by titus- 3 replies

Hi, I just achieved from a nursery: 2 Roystonia 2 Phoenix Can. 2 Washintonia Robusta Sizes aprox.: 11 FT Palms will be located in pots on a terrace of our Penthouse, so full sun and/or shade available (we live in Caracas, Venezuela, South America) My cuestion is: as the palms were deliverd in rather small pots I noticed that their rootsystem has been developed following the shape of this narrow pot and leave hardly space for good soil around them. So can I prun the roots of the palm before transplanting them into bigger pots (4 FT high, 3 FT wide) I would be very pleased to read yr opinions. Thanks in advance, Regards, Titus
