I have a few P. rupicola X reclinata.... and one is fruiting heavily for a few years..... I tried to eat a few and they taste like a date, just not as sweet.... A friend has been growing plants from these seeds and have gotten some nice looking palms.. The first picture is a male tree and the picture of the seeds are the female tree.... They are fast growing trees and have both taken 2 nights at 18F..... The male got about 50% burn and the female got about 1/3 burn, but the female tree is in a more protected spot.... The seed ripen in spring and the picture was taken a few days ago...

For the last few weeks every time I watered my Baronii a hummingbird would fly off. I got curious and looked a little closer at the Baronii and this is what I found. Here's a pic of the host. This was taken about August. I tried taking pics this AM but due to the sun I couldn't get a good shot. I'll try again tonight.

2 years ago I went to the area around Curitabamos in Santa caterina to see the wild populations of Butia erisopatha, a truly phenomenal sight. I returned last week to find that where previously stood these 100 year old palms, were now planted the vile Pinus for pulp. All destroyed as fas as you can see. This crime has spread across much of south america. The pulp industry is so powerful it seems immune to the laws made to protect the environemnt and these trees.

Palms & hydrogen peroxide
by PalmatierMeg- 27 replies

Hello everyone, I've been researching care of my bat flower (Tacca chanterieri) and I came across the following advice on the Veseys website: "When watering, occasionally add a cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water. The extra oxygen will kill fungus spores, prevent root rot and encourage roots to grow." Will that same practice work on potted palms & seedlings (impractical for planted palms)? Rot and fungus can be real problems for small/young palms. Has anyone tried this? Please weigh in. Thanks. Meg

I have pics from a non palmie freind who is concerned about her P. reclinata growing in tampa. individual trunks have been declining one by one and existing growth is not vigorous, this clump has been fertilized regular with a standard (probably Lesco) and other than standard esthetic sucker pruning. has previously had no noticable problams, Ie no Ganoderma conchs. I did attend Dr Monica Elliots lecture on Texas palmetto decline, but not well versed on diseases so any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Apart from the obvious colder hardiness of the Theo, what other differences between the two of them? They both sucker but is one more prolific than the other? Are the trunks similar or does the Theo have a thinner trunk than the Dacty or is there still too much varability? Which is the faster grower of the two and by how much? Regards Andy.

When Jeff was moving from Tampa he sold some of his palms to good homes on this board. If you bought some he may want to see how his babies have all grown up. I bought some from him and here they are. Archontophoenix maxima To give you an idea on the size Archontophoenix myolensis Archontophoenix tuckeri Jeff pulled this out of the ground it looked a bit sad and had very little root structure but it did not care at all.

This is my Licuala grandis that I purchased from Fairchild in 2005. Although it is a slow grower it is a beauty. After 4 years,it is finally making a small trunk. I will have to wait 40 years for those 12 footers they have at Fairchild. Here it is as taken this morning. I do not see any cold damage: It would be great to see other Posts of this Palm as I cannot get enough of it.

Here are some pictures of Adonidia merrellii frond defects, any idea as to what the problem is? They are about 3 years old and this the first time this has happen to otherwise healthy Plants. Is it under/over watering, RSM or some sort of fungal infection? How do I stop it? Regards Andy.

Florida Freeze 1/21 & 1/22
by Tag- 30 replies

I wanted to share my observations from this last cold event. No pictures this go round, just observations. This last freeze was the coldest I had experienced in Jacksonville as a palm enthusiast. Prior to this event, the coldest my yard had seen was 26. The last two years, our low was only 28. The morning of 1/21 I was forecast to hit 29 by NWS, 27 by Wunderground, and 30 by Weather.com. As such, I did not protect anything. I woke up that morning to 27. This was supposed to be the coldest of the two nights. During the day, the forecast plummeted and I went into panic mode. NWS now had me forecast at 23, Wunderground 22, and Weather.com 23. After work, I protect…

Butia yellowing
by chevsen- 8 replies

I have a few 25 gallon butia capitata that are showing significant yellow new growth. The old growth looks great. I bought these about a month ago and have not been able to get them all in the ground until yesterday. While in their containers, all showed slight to moderate yellowing on new growth, which I assumed was due to a nutrient deficiency (manganese perhaps?). Anyway, these palms were subsequently stressed with approximately 14" of wet snow on December 17th, followed by a 21F night and several mid-20's nights thereafter. Because of the recent cold weather in the high desert of Southern California, they have been in average temps < 40F since the snow (this i…

Of course you do, it's my old wheelbarrow turned Rhapis mobile garden unit. Now here's the thing, I was considering taking this along to our upcoming annual Palm and Cycad show here in Brisbane. Do you think it would be worth while ? I'm not convinced and I would like some feedback please. It would be placed near the entrance with all the display plants. Do you think it might make a worthwhile addition ? And in one corner of Wal's WOL I have a small Dypsis planted, tis a D.remotifolia and growing nicely.
