Ravenea hildebrandtii and R. robustior
by kristof p- 7 replies
- 1.4k views
are there people who grow these two Ravenea species? i would love to try them in the garden. the R. hildebrandtii because of it's dwarf size so it can easily be protected during the winter (this is like the P. roebelenii in the Ravenea genus). R. robustior i want to try because i've read that this palm has seen a temperature of 20°F(-6°C/-7°C) without damage! this would make it almost as hardy as a CIDP (the leaves)... unfortunately i've never seen R. hildebrandtii seeds or plants for sale

Hemithrinax seeds purchased in early 07'
by www.dadluvsu.com- 29 replies

After reading the description and looking at the figures on pgs. 228-229 in GP2, I am no longer confident that the seed purchased in early 2007 are in fact Hemithrinax... The seed I received were 3-5mm in diameter. Anyone in agreement that these seeds do not match the descrip in GP2? Or better yet, have a clue what these seeds are?

This one is about a little more than a year from a floribunda 4". I have another about a year older in the ground and its not much taller , but much thicker and not as much color. Its leaves spot from the cold before almost anything else I have, say low 50s. otherwise it grows fast and stays deep green.

Nice Butia Mule Comparison
by pg6922- 4 replies

I thought this a nice comparison of forms. If I could have some how got a Queen in the pic... Anyways, I'm always on the look out for the less than ordinary. Also in the neighborhood a quite large Licuala Grandis. The tallest I've seen in the ground in SW Florida. I am not too fond of the way the mule looks and its giving me second thought about planting mine. PG

Question for CIDP fans
by newtothis- 3 replies

I was in Corpus today and noticed alot of the trunks look pinched (for a lack of better term) in multiple spots and have huge fungus like growths on them. Is this telling of inconsistent watering or fertilizer neglect? Is the soil or zone they are growing in wrong? I've seen great pics of nice trunks and trimmed pinapple crown base and this is what I'm hoping for. If you are growing one how can you keep the trunk looking healthy?

And Komi my heart felt thanks & love to you... they germinate very easily in our hot tropical climate and many germinated and have been distributed to like minded people here.only few i have retained for my personal c…

Palm-y Interior Space Too?
by Paul The Palm Doctor!- 4 replies

I can't help it! When I look outside and see all those beautiful palms flourishing outside the window of my home, the subliminal messages from my brain tell me to make the interior look tropical, too. Little by little, palm rugs appeared, palm wastebaskets, soap dishes, glasses, palm fronded ceiling fans soon followed! Then, palm stencils made their way home from Home Depot; bath towels festooned with coconuts found their way into my shopping cart eventually also! I've given up resisting; I'm a palm deco slave, and there doesn't seem to be a cure! (I don't want one anyway!) Has this palm-y power of suggestion attacked any of you, too? Share your addiction, if you…

So i made a trip over to the local Home Depot today to pick up a few bags of soil for some spring plantings.. well every once and awhile you get lucky and find a Royal or a Teddy, to the more common triangle and kentias. Well today i say they recieved a new batch of goodies and had 4 teddy's. as i was checking them out i noticed one tucked away in the back. i moved the other three and noticed it had very similar leaf structure but was a tad different and had some other coloration on the base. i felt around in the soil and noticed a heal on this guy. i was blown away. So what it is im not to sure but it looks healthy and i threw it in a 15 gal right away. Here is she: …

I planted a Dypsis ambositrae.
by cfkingfish- 6 replies

When I had my nursery up here in Venice, I had purchased D. ambositrae seed back when you assumed you were getting Fakey, but I liked Fakey, so it was okay. One of the dealers I go the seed from had told me this was the real deal, and I tried to keep those separate. When I moved, it was hard for me to keep things well organized, as I was happy to even have a place to keep my plants. Anyways, I planted this out yesterday hastily, and it seems to grow more like the real D. ambositrae (slow), and is not as leggy. What do you guys think? I put it well drained in full sun because if it is the real deal it will need the drainage, since it has requirements similar to that of D. …

Rhapidophyllum hystrix

I have a Rhapidophyllum that does a sex change from year to year. Generally it's a male plant but sometimes it will have both sexes on the same inflorescence. I noticed this year it's produced a nice seed crop. They usually ripen for me about this time of the year, and you can tell when their ripe by the putrid odor of the fruit. They smell like something I can't mention here and the fruit is soft to the touch. I learned years ago that the seeds should be chilled for about 2 months to get good germination. After cleaning the seeds and letting them dry for a few days I put them in moist sand and put them in the refigerator for 2 months. I did an experiment by chilling …

Roystonea regia habitat pics
by jayfro6- 31 replies

If you've driven south of "Alligator Alley" on State Road 29 in Collier County, you can't miss the stand of royal palms that is accompanied by baldcypress, red maple, and a few tropical species such as gumbo limbo. One of the managers told me awhile back that the area, including the Fakahatchee Strand, was logged in the 1940s and was pretty much left to regenerate a new forest on its own. This is the largest area of natural or naturalized, whichever theory you want to believe, Roystonea regia in the state. I am a forester and I was doing some surveying in part of the strand so I grabbed a few pics. The underbrush doesn't thin out in there too much, but it was a lot …

To water or Not to water

I just went out side and the rain drops put a smile on my face. As expected some areas below my little canopy (big red banana and big howea) were wet and others dry. This means not all of my palms are getting equal water. I must know what you big canopy owners do...Keep the sprinkles on to ensure proper water for all palms or just let the canopy direct the drip? Gosh its nice not to run the sprinklers though

And I managed to identify them all by myself (with a little help from Floridata) ooohh. I'm gonna have so much fun... Thanks my friend!!! //Ciczi

As I posted in another thread, we moved a few months ago to a new house on a MUCH bigger lot. We had been in our previous house for 7 years, palm obsessed for about 5 1/2 of those years. We're keeping the old house/garden and will be renting it out. One unexpected benefit of this process is that we've spent the last several weekends cleaning up the yard, pruning, raking, and taking all the crappy kids toys to the new house, and just generaly making the garden looked the way I had intended. I have my fingers crossed that we'll have renters in there within a couple weeks, so I went out with my camera today and documented what my last 5 1/2 years of obsessive gardening h…

Roystoneas of Bermuda
by Palm Guy- 5 replies

Hi all, According to one of our local botany books there are only 2 species of Roystonea on the island, R. Oleracea and R. Regia. While taking a drive around various locations of the island I have come across some different looking Roystoneas, perhaps R. Princeps. Sorry for the poor quality pictures we're still in the midst of a cold front so it was overcast for much of the day. Also, why do many of the Royals seem to throw new yellow leaves in winter? I've noticed this on many other palms but Royals are the most noticeable. Anyone else notice this? First up, the possible R. Princeps. There were about four or five of them with the same look witin 100 yards of ea…
