Self-watering pots for growing palms
by Mindaries_Perth- 1 reply

Hi guys with all the fuss with water restrictions all over the place, I was wondering about your thoughts and experiences with growing your interim seedlings/smaller palms in these self-watering pots ? Do they infact do really well in this setup ? They've been around for awhile I guess but how effective are they for growing palms ? I like the idea of the plants regulating their own water intake by the process of capillary action from the water reservoir in the bottom tray out into the drainage holes. The potting mix has to have good porosity in order to bring the water up I guess ? I also like the fact that you can fertigate at the same time. The only probl…

Which retail nurseries in LA County or further north offer a consistent, reasonable selection of palms for the palm-growing enthusiast? By reasonable selection, I mean a nursery that might have a selection of dypsis species, for example. I am aware of all the great choices presented in San Diego and Orange Counties, and when I need to I can get down there and also can order over the internet, but am wondering whether anyone is aware of consistent walk-in, retail sources further north.

I'm looking for someone local, that knows palms well enough to know which ones will thrive on the beach in the Florida panhandle. I'd like someone that will oversee the installation project, order the palms, get the crew and equipment necessary to install them. Any suggestions?

Another Palm Mission..
by DippyD- 2 replies

I know we should leave reviews in the growers guid however this is still a PRA, and deals with how the palms are grown and how happy they are... I have a little list than i am trying ot hunt down and figured i would check out to see what kevin has since i have heard great reviews from people... the first couple palms i grabbed not only when i picked them up where they rooted into the ground but where rather large in size for size of the container... this was a repetitive problem if you would call it with everything i grabbed. so a idea of my list was a few nice dypsis species that grow well for us here in socal. about 10 of those...he had just about all of them,…

Real Soil in Pots
by Palm Guy- 18 replies

Hi all, I'm experimenting with different types of potting medium and have found that the palms I have in real soil are doing much better than my "florida mix" which is comprised of bark, coir, peat, sawdust and humus. I don't use pure soil but mix it with Pro-mix for the beneficial fungi. Does anyone else incorporate the real stuff in their pots? Cheers, Mike

Trunking Sabal Uresana
by palmaddict- 6 replies
This Sabal uresana comes from seed collected in habitat about 15 years ago. An acquaintance collected it while on vacation in Baja Mexico. I purchased the plant as a 15 gallon and it has been in the ground for about 4 years. The plant has an overall height of maybe 10-12 feet and already has a petiole length of 6 feet which means its going to have a huge spread as it grows. It seems to finally picked up speed as it is trunking. An overall shot.

I purchased this palm 8 yrs ago as a 1 gal seedling. Today it stands with 8' to crown shaft. The palm flowered in 2008 for the first time and set seed. I have waited for the fruit to ripen and they have now ripened, but the fruit color is yellow (V.merrillii = red fruit) so what do I have? I will take a few pics this weekend.

Well, it is a little early, but at some point you just don't care. All of these plants made the entire winter in pots on the front porch so they can't be any worse off in the ground. First up was this pot of Chamaedorea klotziana which was split into 3 clumps like the pictured.

I took a trip to Old Myakka yesterday morning on my bike after hearing of serious carnage. Apparently it hit the low 20s twice and many nights just below freezing. Here is what I found: On the way out, there has been these foxtails grown from one gallons about 8 miles east of I-75. They are definitely goners now. You can see I am out in the middle of nowhere, it looks like Iowa. Syagrus cearensis: Borassus aethiopium:

Plenty of showers and rain here today so I thought I'd have a look at the palms and as usual I am always impressed with the wet look. My favorite as always with the wet look is Dypsis cabadae, what might yours be ? Here's some photos of a few different cabadaes in my yard, the rain is clearing now.

Rainforest Palms
by Jeff in St Pete- 23 replies

This morning I drove out into the country to visit my friend who owns a spice farm. After talking and catching up for a little while, we decided to walk down through his property towards the river where it turns into dense rainforest. I've posted photos of this area before but today we walked a lot deeper into the forest and I found a few more palm species that I have never seen there before including Neonicholsonia watsonii. Unfortunately the lighting was bad and the photos didn't turn out. But here are some of the palms we saw today. Cryosphila sp. This palm is right at the entrance to the forested area and we've walked past it many times and never noticed it.…

systemic pesticide during host dormancy
by palmazon- 4 replies

Not trying to trigger a firestorm of controversy here, but a couple of weeks ago the warm temps in Southern California spawned an explosion of scale and mealybugs on Ashton's palms; my initial impulse is to drench the planters with a contact pesticide, then apply Bayer's systemic - the question is will the host plant assimilate the chemical now we're below 50f?

Chamadorea linearis
by Peter- 19 replies
- 1.4k views
I was at Leon's nursery today and he showed me this Chamadorea. He thinks he got seed from either Inga or directly from Lyon's Arboretum in about '99. It has an ivory colored trunk, mottled crownshaft, about 24 pinnae, and is an overall fabulous palm. He only has the one, and it has already been sold. Has anyone seen these around? What a great palm!

Veitchia ID
by Daryl- 2 replies

I always thought this was V.joannis, but not everyone agrees with me. How does everyone here differentiate between the commonly grown species in this genus? This palm has done it tough over the years, growing on the edge of a hot dry slope with no supplemental watering, then getting fried 18 months ago in our cold and becomng totally defoliated. It is certainly quite a tough customer. regards, Daryl

Aussie rules for Livistona in North Florida
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 20 replies

After one hard freeze this winter, I'm surprised to report that all of my Australian livistonas are flying through without incident. The same can't be said for the lowly L. chinensis. Whereas L. drudei, L. nitida, L. decora (formerly decipiens), and L. saribus have little to no evidence of the cold, my common as weeds L. chinensis look rough. They aren't going to die, but they are going to look ugly for a good while. I just love winter!
