Please take a look at this Iriartea deltoidea
by geonomaDude- 5 replies

Hi everyone, Recently, we bought in a local nursery the Iriartea deltoidea shown in the pictures below. There has been some wind these days and the palm is adapting from shadow to partial sun. I am worried about some burns (?) that appeared in the leaves and how the coming spear is showing. What can it be?? Here are the pics: - Adolfo

Veitchia arecina - risks of transplanting
by JeffreyApolloBeach- 9 replies

Hello, I have 3 Veitchia arecina that I want to move to a different spot. I'm planning on replacing them with 3 Royal palms. The reason I'm moving them is because they got burned by the cold events we had this winter, while my only Royal was untouched. Is the arecina very sensitive to transplant? These have about 2 1/2 - 3 ft of trunk. Thanks Jeffrey

It is winter time right? I would normally wait untill spring time to plant but the weather has been so nice and the fifteen day forecast calls for lows mostly in the high forties so I planted a few palms today. My last Foxy Lady croaked, but fortunately I have a great neighbor in Ellidro who hooked me up with a great deal on a new one. I am going to keep this one alive. Here is my Ceroxylon Quindiuense in a nice protected spot. I have high hopes for this one.

I decided to check the definition for "weed", and the first one that comes up via Google is "a plant that is not valued where it is growing and is usually of vigorous growth." Can't argue with that! And we have an amazing collection of weeds! Visitors from the U.S. mainland are usually surprised when they see begonias and impatience in our garden and I explain that those are just annoying weeds here! However, this is not about begonias, but about another type of "weed": palm trees! There's a large fruiting Archontophoenix alexandrae on the property next door (belongs to Steve and Steph since 2007- but Steve, no reflection on you! ), and we've had volunteer seedlings fr…

Cocos nucifera

Hello fellow palm lovers, This morning I had to go to the home office, which is on the second story of a small commercial complex called Cypress Square. In the central plaza is an enormous coconut palm loaded with fruit. Climbing the stairs, I reach out and touch it. Knowing many of you dream of growing Cocos nucifera, I took some photos. I couldn't get any closer to the crown without a ladder. Enjoy.

The reds have been on show in the garden at present, thought I'd share, have a look. Firstly Dypsis crinita has not one but two leaves opening in glorious red, what a bonus ! As I got closer the flash went off.

Night of the Rats 1 2

My large Chamaedorea collection and other palms like Pritchardia have been decimated. All this happened in one night. I went out the next morning to water to find mass destruction, sort of like a Pearl Harbour in my container ranch. They had mainly stripped the leaves off some palms which were up to 5 years old, in other cases they had eaten the palms down to the ground in yet others they gnawed through the stem to the growing point, but left the leaves. I have lost about 50% of my chamaedoreas. Now I am at a loss to know why, because these palms have been in my garden for up to 5 years and I had never had rat attack there, but I did get a rat attack a…

This shows what a mild winter we had. The Bizzie is untouched. Even my Abysinnia banana is standing with minor damage. The Mule looks great. Here is my other Mule. Banana look rough but are still full height. Some years they go all the way to the ground.

Dypsis Sp. " Great White" 1 2

This Dypsis mystery palm never ceases to amaze me. When it sheds a leaf base it will stop you in your tracks . It has to be one of the most colorfull Dypsis with the whitest crownshaft ever and colors of red ,purple, dark brown, tan fuzz and a black spot on the crownshaft! This thing is really blowing up now with a height of 8 Ft., a trunk base of 1 ft. and a swollen crownshaft of 10". Also it is still splitting but this is turning into a mystery within a mystery because it already has 3 rings of trunk . That would mean technicaly that it is going to branch ala Dypsis lutescens and others. I think it will have at least another ring or two of trunk before it branches. …

Carpoxylon macrosperum

Hello Palm Lovers, I think/hope I scored big at the S. Ft. Myers HD today. Yesterday Sean PM'd me (thanks again, Sean) that there were 3 15 gal Carpoxylons at HD that were misidentified as purple kings. After lunch my husband & I drove over. We knew right away they weren't purple kings but have never seen a Carpoxylon larger than a seedling. Then this stranger came over and eyed our find. He confirmed they were Carpoxylon and said he planned to buy one too. We took the largest of the three. They had taken some hits from the cold fronts but overall looked good. We also bought a D. cabadae (correct ID). So I am posting photos of our newest baby (my little Carpoxy…

Very effective squirrel, rabbit, & mole control
by ThunderSRQ- 4 replies

Nothing like a little "automatic" pest control! I first noticed these two red shouldered hawks hanging out in the yard very frequently (basically daily) about 2 months ago and, since then, have seen almost no squirrels at all (for reference, I "eliminated" 123 of them from April thru mid-December last year!), no more mole tunnels in the open area of the yard (and the yard was absolutely "infested" with them last summer), and no rabbits whatsoever (although rabbits weren't a problem for me -- except that my dogs would go nuts chasing after them). Very cool bonus -- they are now building a nest in one of my pine trees so I will soon get to watch the family thing develo…

Check This Out

I was having dinner with my brother-in-law's, brother-in-law and he mentioned he was cutting out some palms from his house. I was curious as to what it was that he was describing. When I arrived he showed me what appeared to be an upright form of green S. repens. I commented that I was not interested in digging it out. As I was backing up.....I almost bumped into THIS!............didn't even notice it at first! Geez! how old you reckon it is? He said there used to be a double header (the other a little shorter) but one just broke off one day for no reason. I told him he had an extremely old "palmetto" and not to cut it down.....he said he wouldn't. Note "Mike" in…

Phoenix sylvestris??? 1 2
by phatmiata- 41 replies

Picked these up at HD on sale of course , anyhow, the label says Phoenix sylvestris but being new to the palm world im wondering if, or how you could tell if that is really what it is when they are this small? I learned a bit already just by using the search function, but can anyone really tell from these photos? The fronds are a blueish green, and lots of spikes at the trunk, ouch. hehehe Can someone verifiy this as indeed a Phoenix sylvestris? I just would hate to wait years for this to get big only to find out this is not the palm that it was labeled as. Phoenix 1??? Phoenix 2???

Cut em or leave em?
by palmislandRandy- 8 replies

I had to have, hopefully the last one of my Queens cut down! Well the "proffesionals" missed the open space and laid it down right on 2 of my Teddies. Seems like it just brushed the crowns and only broke the fronds on one side. So should they be cut off of left to fend for themselves???

Transplanting help / questions
by Hilo Jason- 2 replies

Hi Everyone, Forgive me if this is somewhere here on the board already (and feel free to just send me a link to it if it is). It looks like I will be moving sometime in 2009 and I am looking to bring the majority of my palms with me. I have about 40 in the ground that I would hate to leave. I'm looking for some transplanting tips and advice for these guys. The majority of them were all planted within the last year, with a few being in the ground for about 18 months. Most were 5 - 15 gallons when planted. My idea is to dig them up and put them in pots that are a size larger than what they were in before I put them in the ground. So what was in a 5, will be du…
