Australian Cycads
by Brian Bruning- 4 replies

I saw a couple of pics on the internet of Livistona mariae and some cycads growing in a desert palm valley in central Australia. Can anyone identify the cycads? They'd be good for Palm Springs since the climate is about the same.

Basic soil mix for palms
by tank- 10 replies
- 5.9k views
A nurser recommended a local source for premixed soil. I was planning on buying 2 yards and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the mix. The ingredients they have are composted peanut shells, pine bark fines, composted cow manure, sand and topsoil. I can provide any additional stuff for them to mix. I was assured that the composted cow manure had been tested by IFAS and has a very low salt content. The typical ph of most of their mixes is neutral or just slightly acidic, according to them. The nurser primarily gets the soil for cycads and may have a little faster drainage than I want for most of my plants (he thought this as well). His mix: 50% Pine Fines …

I bought this as a C. microspadix but it looks pretty robust (individual trunks), not knowing much about Chamaedorea's is this a true microspadix? I have aquired a few species of Chamaedorea lately and this is really nice genus, especially for a smaller yard.

Who is attending PSSC Meeting in Orange County
by palmaddict- 4 replies
Just wondering who from San Diego might be attending the PSSC meeting in Orange County on March 21st. I was planning on attending but family issues are forcing me to fly to Sacramento for the weekend. The meeting includes a trip to Ralph Valez's place which is quite special based on the previous photos. I have arranged to purchase a 15 gallon P. sunkha from Perry in Northern California and was planning on going up there and bringing it back in my truck. Unfortunately I cannot attend now. Is there someone going up there with a truck from San Diego who could pick it up for me. I would be happy to chip in for gas and would come to your house to get it. I would estimat…

I am stretching just a bit by putting this in "Discussing Palms" but assuming you would use them, or someone like them to take pictures of your palm gardens, I am going for it. This is quite innovative. I plan to get them to shoot my garden if prices are reasonable. Looks like a local service, but now that you know that this kind of thing exist and what to look for, there may be someone in your area doing the same thing. http://www.louisianahelicam.com/index.html

Why won't it open??
by palmislandRandy- 8 replies

My dypsis madagascariensis has a frond that started to open then stopped! (the middle one in first pic) Three more have come out since it started, and have begun to open already. I've twisted, torqued, bent, massaged, whispered to it, screamed at it, but it remains tightly closed! Will it stay like this?? ?

It is done-- too
by Gbarce- 25 replies

Crazy weather we have been having over here lately has had a pretty bad effect on me and I have been suffering a variety of minor ailments for the past 2 weeks. I have had runny nose, sore throat, a fever for a couple of days and am just left with an annoying dry cough for now. I was totally bed ridden for a couple of days but mostly lethargic. I felt a lot better today so I did something this afternoon. Just like BSman's thread-- guess what it is. Sorry but I don't get to meet other Palm talk members over here much so no one else on the board knows.

Leu Gardens is on Wheel of Fortune this week
by Eric in Orlando- 1 reply

Watch "Wheel of Fortune" this week as Leu Gardens is featured on it. Back in early Dec. "Wheel of Fortune" filmed for a week at Sea World and came out to Leu Gardens and filmed with Vanna White and some cars to be given away. One area they filmed at was next to the Palm Garden. The local station had a special on showing about them filming and in one shot you can see a Syagrus schizophylla, Syagrus botryophora, and Dypsis madagascariensis "Mahajanga". In another scene ishe is walking and you can see a Caryota gigas in the background. At Sea World they filmed by the dolphin lagoon and you can see all the big coconuts. I was out there last week and they are still green with …

Different Butia capitata
by kelen- 3 replies
Here in my city of Canguçu (south of Brazil), I found this butia capitata different. It produces huge inflorescence and fruits of different color. In despite of fruits don't have a fibrous pulp, the "mucilagem" is very hard and horrible taste, very acid. I never saw other specie in my city, only B. capitata. This is really different to me.

Emerging Leaf Constipation
by JimR- 21 replies
- 2.1k views
I have two small T. princeps that I got from Ruud several years ago. They have been kept in pots and have grown slowly but regularly. Now, one of them seems to be in trouble. A new leaf has emerged only up to its lowest fronds. The petiole has not emerged at all. However, the fronds have opened nicely, but are sitting jammed down against the stem. There has been no further growth, and no new spear has pushed past. It has been in this state for about 2.5 months now. It appears healthy otherwise with no obvious signs of illness. Its brother continues to grow normally. I tried to get a close-up picture of the problem, but it did not come out well. Thanks

Can anybody tell the difference of the hardiness between a Butia ordonata and a Butia capitata. Are the ordonatas effective more frost resident or are they just about the same as capitatas? Marcel
