I know Chamaedorea radicalis can take quite a bit of sun, but I'm wondering if any one is growing it in full sun away from the coast. I'm about 12 miles from the coast in south Orange County. Thanks!

i was not entirely sure my B. decumbens seedling i planted out as a germinated seed last year in June survived this winter, it looked undammeged but i did not know if the speer was ok... now im sure it has survived...it is even growing again, the little speer i could see just before winter has grown a little and i could pul it now but it wont come out and is of a nice green colour. infact it has no damage on either (two + the little speer) leaves it has...for protection it had some fleece over it during the coldest nights and a plexi plate placed against the wall kept it somewhat dryer but that plate blew away on some occasions and it did rained on the seedling...the wett…

I thought I would share this with you guys. What a shame!!!! Dear Friends, If you have already seen these photos, please forgive me, but I have been having a lot of trouble sending out these pics. some of you got them and most of you didn't. Hopefully this time you will get them. About 2 weeks ago, some one threw a molotov cocktail at my palms in the parkway and as you can see, burned the 'hell' out of them. Pardon my language, but I thought the word 'hell' was most appropriate at this time. In my city, all the palms in parkways belong to the city, so this morning, without my calling the city, they sent down a crew to trim the burned fronds and throw them into …

Howdyall: Who among you (or people you know) have grown any Corypha species in Southern California? I'd think they would be a tough grow due to their tropical origins, but . . . . . Pictures would be wonderful.

Archontophoenix Alexandrae

I bought this at the local big box hardware store and looked great when I brought it home. Well after spending 1 1/2 months at the homestead (only across the street from the store) it looks like a casualty of our recent wild fires, I like flame kissed steaks, but not palms. I am thinking either it got too cold or it wasn't ready to be outdoors. For reference I did see some cold damage on my foxtails, Royal and Foxylady, but nothing like this. It is still alive and is the subject of my Wisconsin to Queensland project (later post) but I hesitant to put it in if it's going to look like this every time we hit 36 F. It is still alive, as I measured one of the new fro…

I left the pool water running for 3 hours
by osideterry- 15 replies

So I noticed the pool water 2-3 inches low, and turned the water on. Then I took my son to the dentist, grabbed lunch at Carls Jr, went to Vons, etc. Came home to see a lot of extra water on the patio. I've almost done this several times, but always caught it before it overflowed. Being the first time to actually overflow the pool, I had a chance to see just how level it is and what part of the yard would get the most soaked. The pool is darned level, but just low enough to really flood things in two places. Those being where I have an Archo alexandrae, and a bed that has an Arch cunninghamiana and a Pandanus utilis. All things considered, this might have done more…

Gilenos threads have gottn me to go back through old photos and scan pictures of palms predigitally taken. S. sancona photo posted earlier was one.. This is S. macrocarpa --- I think I identified by seeds but took 10 rolls of film (during 3 week trip ) so it was harder to organize back then. Photo was taken on the road to Governor Valaderes ( I cant remember the citys name) but we were driving from Diaminitina to Rio trying to see as many Syagrus species as possible. Best wishes, Ed

Basic soil mix for palms
by tank- 10 replies
- 5.9k views
A nurser recommended a local source for premixed soil. I was planning on buying 2 yards and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the mix. The ingredients they have are composted peanut shells, pine bark fines, composted cow manure, sand and topsoil. I can provide any additional stuff for them to mix. I was assured that the composted cow manure had been tested by IFAS and has a very low salt content. The typical ph of most of their mixes is neutral or just slightly acidic, according to them. The nurser primarily gets the soil for cycads and may have a little faster drainage than I want for most of my plants (he thought this as well). His mix: 50% Pine Fines …
