What lurks in your palm trees?
by CromulentKevin- 9 replies

So I was doing yardwork and ended up yanking off some old leaf bases from some queen palms (mostly just the ones that came off easily). I found all sorts of horrible things in there. The most irritating thing was there was a lot of mold/mildew growth tucked in there which I hope will not hurt the palms. I haven't seen it so prevalent before, but maybe it is due to the recent heavy rains. But then of course there was the obligatory spiders, weird albino insects, and all manner of creepy crawly which lovingly managed to fall onto my face as I was pulling their homes apart. So this begs the question, what is the oddest thing you've found in your palm trees? Rats? Snakes? Joh…

When I was photographing the Ravenea xerophylla (sp?) in the center, I also got the better part of a nice, large Beccariphoneix at this garden in La Habra, California. For those who don't know, it's big, green giant Badminton birdie on the right. Show us yours, y'all!

king palms
by cencalpalmguy- 13 replies

I know those of you that live in Florida and So. Cal. probably refuse to grow these due to the abundance of them, but here in the Fresno area of Ca. we are limited due to the heavy frosts and fog of the winter and the intense heat and drought of the summer. Every yard around has queen palms, so if I were to go with a king, what would it be? Are a. cunninghamiana and a. illawara the same thing? Which is more cold tolerant? I looked on Ortanique and r.p.s. and neither site had them listed. Thanks, Chad.

I've read a little bit of information on this palm and cannot find any photos on line nor in any palm encyclopedias. I understand that they are almost extinct in the wild (in a couple of private coffee plantations) and I havent heard of this palm being in cultivation. Has anyone ever seen a C.sasimae ? Thanks

Majesty Palm (R. Rivularis) mold issue
by jasons- 2 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi all, I have a majesty palm in my back yard (I actually have 4 but only one is sick). Yesterday - I noticed that my tallest one has a black mold growing where the new spear/fronds are sprouting at the top of the crown. Could this be a result of some of the freezes/snow we had back in December? I have read that tender palms can have mold problems after cold weather or hard freezes, but this past winter was really no different than the previous winters we have had. In fact, I barely have any frond damage from the few frosts/freezes we had this year. This palm has been in the ground for several years; the trunk is almost 6' tall and it is otherwise green and he…

Butia What?
by mallett_sj- 2 replies

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out what Butia this is, she is alot darker than any of my other butias. I would say in the year that I've had it, it's really widened the trunk base also. And it showed no effect to any of the cold weather we encountered this year in the DFW area. Are their bases supposed to be so green? Thanks

T. takil seeds from europalms...
by RobG7aChattTn- 3 replies

I was wondering if anyone had gotten Trachycarpus takil seeds from europalms this year either as a new order or as replacements for last year's bad seeds. I ordered 2,000 seeds last year and they were all bad. Europalms actually contacted ME stating that their seeds were all bad and they offered replacements for this year. Well, early this year I noticed that they had T. takil seeds for sale and I emailed James at europalms. On Jan. 18 he stated that he would be sendng the seeds out "probably next week". Well, now I can't even get an email returned. Has anyone had similar problems (or a lack of problems) getting takil seeds this year? Please specify if your experie…

Coconut palms in decline
by buzzmonkey- 7 replies
Recently, over the past month or so, I've noticed a large number of coconut palms all over Broward and Miami-Dade Counties in various states of serious decline. It appears to be the effects of a pathogen other than LY. The lower leaves appear to turn brown first, and it seems to gradually spread to newer ones until the entire crown is brown and the palm dies. It does not appear to be LY for a few reasons. First, the palms aren't yellowing at all, they are going directly to brown. Second, they do not drop their fruit, which I believe is a characteristic sign of LY. Third, it does not appear to be affecting any other LY susceptible species like Adonidias and Pritchardias. …

Rancho Soleded Dypsis Score!
by ellidro- 16 replies

Every now and again I take a trip to Rancho Soledad Nursery (its about 15min from my house) and look around. Usually they have the same standard palms at great prices but today I noticed this lone soldier by a bunch of Pembana's and Teddy Bear's. The sales people weren't sure what it was so I bought it. I have a good idea what it is but wanted to hear some of your opinions. I think I really scored!

Svalbard Global Seed Vault
by Viking- 8 replies

Here are some info i have gathered on the Global Seed Vault on Svalbard in case some are interested. What is a seed vault? Svalbard Global Seed Vault is not a gene bank, but a safety-storage for preservation of duplicate collections of seeds on behalf of genebanks. The Seeds in the Seed Vault shall only be accessed when the original seed collections have been lost for any reason. The depositors will retain their rights over the seeds. There will be no way that Svalbard Global Seed Vault, or Norway can give access to the seeds without consent from the depositors. The seeds will be returned to the depositors on request. How many seeds will be stored in Svalbard…

A very generous palm society member said that if I wanted to dig up a couple of palms from their garden I could have them. Well I'm one to give it the old college try so here's some pics of the new babies. She wishes to remain anonymous so that means: don't say anything Bill Sanford since you know where every palm this side of the Mississippi resides. Bottle palm on the left Kentiopsis oliviformis on the right Archontophoenix maxima center ....but what's that new palm in the background? Here it is on the left. Booyeah!!!!! Pseudophoenix sargentii with trunk! The leaf bases look a bit rotted so there may be some funky pink rot going on but hopefully …

Palms in the rain 1 2 3
by bgl- 85 replies

After a very wet night (7.2 inches over a 24 hour period, as of 8 a.m.), it's still pouring down. Normally, the weather - rain or no rain - doesn't affect my daily routine, but when you look out the window and it's like you're staring into a major waterfall, then it's probably a good time to be flexible! So, I decided to get some stuff done indoors. Except for half an hour or so when I went outside to take a few pictures. It was still pouring down, just not at the same incredible rate. Started off with a shot of Clinostigma Cathedral (C. samoense) with the grey and wet sky in the background. The slender palm in the foreground is a Cyrtostachys, probably C. loriae.

Ok, at the risk of starting yet another mystery Dypsis thread, here's a Dypsis I got from Danny Lewis, who got it from Tropical Vibe. It was tentatively called D. honkona. Any thoughts?
