germinating medium
by Peter Pacific- 4 replies
I am fairly new to germinating seeds but I´ve had a modicum of success with 28 species in my makeshift greenhouse. Out of necessity, I have a question for the experts...Can you germinate palm seeds in a sand/coco fiber mix even though when the plant matures requires a rich humus laden soil to prosper? I live on the beach and just received a new order of Iriatea deltoidea, Welfia regia, Pseudophoenix sargentii and Mauritia flexuosa seeds. Usually the seeds are germinated directly in pots, it´s pretty warm and I usually have no problems. Can all of you out there offer some comments. Thanks, Peter

Caryota urens unirrigated in SoFla
by www.dadluvsu.com- 2 replies
I have an immediate landscaping need and have some nice Caryota urens. The only hangup I am having is the location has no irrigation and never will. I am NOT gonna drag a hose out to them, I'll forget. So the Q of the day is, will this palm survive in SoFla w/o irrigation? (I'll be planting ones like the larger of the two.)

Socretea Transplanting
by Dypsisdean- 2 replies
I will be moving a small (4 feet tall) Socretea. I learned from Trinidad Bob's question about transplanting Verschafeltia that at least that stilt rooted palm is not an easy mover. Is that the same case with Socretea. Does anyone know? And in general, are stilt rooted palms harder to move? I could see the problem with moving a large Socretea or other palms with massive arial roots, but as a rule are they touchier than "regular" palms?

How to tell the difference between
by MattyB- 17 replies
- 2.3k views
Can anyone shed some light on how to tell the difference between young date palms and canary date palms? At what age does P. dactylifera show blue green? Pictures and experience would be great. I was given 9 Phoenix sp. and I have no idea what they are. I'll get some updated pics later. Here's a pic of one just after planting about 18 months ago. They are much darker green now I assume from fertilizer. Thanks for the help. -Matt

Chamaedorea dammeriana
by John in Andalucia- 14 replies
- 1.5k views
A customer has come back to me looking for info on Chamaedorea dammeriana, so I wondered if anyone can enlighten me. It is not a species I would normally stock, but I had some left over from a personal request by a previous customer who, after bugging me to satisfy his collection, is now buying direct from my supplier. Such is life. So is anyone growing this species? Some photos would be great, as I could direct him here for the visuals.

Cyrtostachys renda
by RainForestt Robert- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
After the biennial in Costa Rica I ended up with a lot of C. renda seeds. For some reason as much as we tried to give them away on the party bus there was not that many takers. Collecting the seeds was fun, as you can see from the photos below.

Christmas Palm
by buffy- 2 replies
I have a pair of Christmas Palms that I've grown from seed collected at a resort in Belize. These guys just stay yellow. I have about 3 dozen other palms growing in the same half peat / half perlite mix in the same place in the yard, and only these guys suffer. I also have kelp meal dusted on the surface for the last several months. They also seem sensitive to direct sunlight with the tip burning. What gives?

Kentiopsis oliviformis
by JimStPete- 9 replies
- 1.1k views
I was finally able to buy two Kentiopsis oliviformis seedlings from a local dealer. The seedlings are about 5" tall. Is there any reason that I need to keep them in pots or can I just plant them out in the yard? I'm fairly new at dealing with seedlings but I've always found that Palms do much better and grow much faster when planted in the ground (even though they are doing fairly well in the pots right now). I'm worried because the potting soil seems to stay wet for long periods of time. I removed the 'tray' from the bottom of the pots to make sure they never stand in water and drain quickly. They are in 1/2 day sun right now (filtered through the pool screen). …

more palms killed
by Eric in Orlando- 29 replies
- 1.6k views
In the past week we have had some more palms killed here at Leu Gardens. The bad luck started last Oct. when a nearby tree took a lighting strike. I posted photos of this event which then killed a Caryota rumphiana and a gigantic Arenga pinnata and some smaller Calyptrocalyx. A 35 year old Attalea rostrata had all the leaves but one die off and I'm not sure it will live, I hope the bud puts out new growth. It also damaged some others including this Salacca magnifica, luckily it seems alive. It has one green leaf and the spear is pushing out. Then last Friday, a huge Quercus laurifolia, Laurel Oak fell. I hate these trees as they are short lived, get rotten insi…

Raphia farinifera irrigation
by Jasen- 5 replies
I am considering trying my hand at growing a Raphia farinifera, but before I take the plunge I wanted to know a bit about its irrigation requirements. I understand they enjoy boggy conditions, but I was wondering if twice per week lawn irrigation would be enough to keep them happy. By the way, planting would be in Broward county, zone 10, with rocky fill and sandy soil.

New Cold Tolerant Palm
by amazondk- 8 replies

As a change from life on the equator I am spending a week in Great Falls, Montana with my parents. To my surprise the weather has been snowy and cold since my arrival here on Monday night April 27. While out on the street today I found some cold tolerant palms planted next to a local establishment. Maybe if it warms up I can see if I can find some seeds.

Pytchosperma info needed!
by plantapalm- 1 reply

A friend of mine has some really cool stuff in seed right now and has given me dibs on anything I want. I am like a kid in a candy store every time I go over to his house. I have a lot of pictures but I have not asked if I can post any yet. I collected seeds from a palm labeled Pytchosperma robustior. I have checked the Kew list and did not see it listed. I googled it and found other accounts of the name listed just no usable info. Is this an acceptable name or a syn for something else. Thanks Michael Here are the seeds on the palm. No good picture of the palm though, sorry.

Caryota Removal
by OverGrown- 11 replies
Has anyone actually gone through the trouble of having a Caryota (urens or gigas) removed? I'm curious as to what's involved? When the time comes its is more than likely that I will have a professional come remove it. I've read about cranes and bobcats but is using a chain saw useless? Also, are they more likely to fall over in strong wind as opposed to other palms like kings and queens? I'm thinking about taking the chance and planting the specimens I have to enjoy their beauty now and deal with removal later. Input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Peter

Hi, I thought I'd ask outright as I cannot find any specific threads about my query. Anyway, I've just got a Golden Cane which is about 6ft with about 5 stems and a foot of slender trunk. Are they ok to transplant? I did get plenty of the main root system but some didnt come out? I've taken off many fronds to reduce shock and is currently soaking in seaweed emulsion. Advice appreciated.

Dear Friends Today morning i got my copy of Palms March 2009.After going through the article on Medemia Argun_page 9 & Discovering Africa's Newest Palm_page 37 was totally out of the world experience, since they happen to be one of my favouriate palms,so the topic was very intreasting to me. Beautiful stills of Dungul Oasis in Egypt & Comparisions between various Borassus species was fentastic..And i like the presentation of these articles too. And the print quality is very nice since my copy did not have hi gloss finish to its pages inside.so i was able to read the articles without eye strain & fitigue. i hope this feature is retained even in your…
