hey everyone! I have a quick question- i have a double trunked xmas palm..... its about 10 feet tall and in a 65 gallon pot, it was transplanted into the pot about 3 weeks ago; It suffered some cold damage alot of brown spots and lost some fronds from a cold snap few weeks back. it got down to 39 degrees and rain for about 2 hours outside (i was working and couldnt bring it in)....but lately... highs have been at least upper 60's low 70's and at night dropping into the mid to upper 40's low 50's.....when is a good time to leave it out for good? and what temp range should i stay away from? Due to the size of this guy bringing it in and out of the garage is a real head…

outdoor potted Veitchia merrillii w/criters?
by cdenunz- 0 replies
Hi all, new here on the forum. I own a couple of potted Veitchia merrillii, (1 triple and 1 quad) they appear to be thriving well here in St Augustine FL, I would guess around 1 new complete frawn on each trunk every month. However, I found some criters and not sure if I need to treat of leave alone. I took a couple of pictures to share. One looks like a white spider mite and the other a lady bug of some sort ( but not youtr typical FL red and black lady bug). From what I read about these palms is the danger is the Red Spider mite..not sure. The brown on the leaves was there when I purchased from the nursery in Fort Pierce, FL. I have been taking good care of them …

Moving all my palms :O
by phatmiata- 17 replies

So the wife and I have agreed to buy her parents place so that they can retire (in 5 years or so). So now I will have to dig up all of my 80+ palms & tropicals and replant them at the new place. The BAD news............... I will have to sell our house in this crappy economy in the next 5 years and hope we can find a buyer. And i will lose my shade from the huge laurel, and live oak trees. The new land is loaded with Orange Clay, rock hard baseball field orange clay, yuck. (it was an orange groove about 15+ years ago) WTH can you grow in this clay? Its hell to dig a hole in too, my foot is already aching and I only planted two palms yesterday! …

Variegated Licuala grandis
by Really full garden- 9 replies

About two years ago i found a pitiful L.grandis in a field of hundreds. It was very variegated but the foliage was burned.(the growers had it in morning sun).I bought it for about five dollars and took it home for some TLC.I was on a mission to save this palm.I gave it a new pot with my palm mix and placed it in bright shade - no direct sun.It soon started to put out a spectacular variegeted leaf 50- 50 green and white. After about six weeks the white part of the leaf started to die from the outer edge inward until just the green part survived.I thought lack of humidity but this was during our rainy season and our humidity is 90-100%.Every fourth leaf is a solid green leaf.…

Hello All, A few months ago an Australian forum member posted a topic and photos of his method of encouraging stilt roots on his Physokentia insolita. I bought a small one last Saturday and while it has a couple stilts I would like for it to grow more. But I have been unable to locate that specific topic even though I used the Search function. Would someone please post a link to it? Thanks.

Flowering for the first time!
by RainForestt Robert- 4 replies

While watering palms this afternoon I noticed that my Pinanga crassipes has put out its first inflorescence. It is one of the few palms that I have grown from seed and flowered (99% of my palms are in pots). Sorry I can't post any pictures, the lens on the camera is broken and I have no back-up. Hopefully I will get my hands on a cheap point and shoot soon. I am quite excited. I hope that this first inflorescence does not abort. The palm is in a 3 or 5 gallon pot, can't remember which, and was germinated about 5 years ago. Overall height is about 3.5 feet. Here is an old photo of a new leaf ................... Robert

Give Us Your One-Liner 1 2 3 4
by Phil- 138 replies
- 7.1k views
OK. How about a thread with significant one liners that you've heard or thought of regarding palms, palm collectors or palm related activities. The only requirement is that these one liners must be true or not true, near correct or totally false, somewhat factual or all-together wrong, or something along these lines. And, they cannot be insulting or critical of another. You don't have to say whether or not they are coorect. The reader must decipher which ones to believe or not believe and which ones to laugh at. It could be fun. I realize that some might think this trivial and other's might think this is a travesty for valuable server disc space. Indeed, they migh…

Curving Royal Palm
by Keith2- 17 replies
- 1.6k views
I put in a few 24 foot Royal palms in December. It has been extremely dry since. They were all watered in well for the first two months. They are all doing fine, but one is developing a strange curvature. The entire green part of the tree is starting to lean. It looks a bit like Free Willy's fin. It's not browning out (any more than the others) and it's getting watered the same. Is this something to be concerned with, or ?? Pray for rain in SW Florida. Thanks for your help. Keith

Hiding in the bushes

Howdy Yall, With the mulch and birds down here, I am always pulling out volunteer palms here and there(mostly washingtonias). Today I decided to trim up an Xora bush that had gotten a little out of control. I was going to remove the whole bush, but decided to trim up one of them and see how I liked it. To my surprise, hiding inside this bush was a huge amount adonidia volunteers. I will be removing all of these and have no plans to pot them up so anyone that might happen to be in the area, you are more than welcome to have them...if not, vegetation pick up is on Monday. Anyone else feel bad about throwing away these little guys? PG bush on the bottom r…

Frankenstein's shade/greenhouse
by PalmatierMeg- 6 replies

Anyone who lives and tries to grow palms and tropicals in southern FL knows that a shadehouse can be a necessity during our 8-9 month summers. But just try to find a home-friendly, economical shadehouse anywhere, even on the internet. For every shadehouse I found, I saw 9+ greenhouses. Greenhouses don't cut it unless you want stewed palm seedlings for dinner. We found a 6x6 foot greenhouse (what else?) at Harbor Freight in Ft. Myers. My husband decided he would build a 6x6 shadehouse using pvc pipe and shadecloth by the yard from Lowe's. We even lucked out on a sale of economy grade shadecloth for $0.34 per yard closeout. But when he priced the pvc we realized the com…

Carpoxylon question
by quaman58- 26 replies
- 1.8k views
Hey all, I know a lot of discussion has been given to this one, so forgive me for asking again. All past posts seem to lean toward the "it won't grow outside in SoCal" line of thinking. But I haven't heard anyone say that they "tried it & it died" either. Because of it's origins, one might assume that it just can't make it here, but there have been plenty of suprises out there that have been contrary to assumptions. (Dypsis pembana comes to mind). Any outdoor experiences, good, bad or otherwise here? As for me, it's taking more & more willpower on my part to walk past them when I spot them in the nusery! I'm a sick, sick man.... Bret

Alloschmidia glabrata
by metalfan- 3 replies

This palm is one of those palms in my greenhouse that has just made venturing into trying to grow palms worthwhile. (It and my Salacca magnifica LOL). It has been such a fast grower, has not had pest problems, has never looked ratty, and is developing the most beautiful banding around the lower trunk as in grows. I planted it pretty much right at the entry door so you see it when you walk in. Its getting very nice leaves now that are separating. Hard to believe it was less than a foot tall 2 years ago!

3 - Pseudophoenix species
by Al in Kona- 7 replies
- 1.3k views
Since there's been some interest here recently about Psedophoenix, I thought I'd share the three species that are growing here in our south Kona, Big Island up-slope garden. Pseudophoenix sargentii was planted in ground as a blade of grass about 15 years ago. It grew so slowly the first 3 years that I was literally ready to pull it out and dispose of it, thinking perhaps it just didn't like it here. I guess it wasn't a priority item since I was very busy digging holes and planting many other plants at the time. Well, in its 4th year I noticed some actual visible growth so I left it alone. Each consecutive year it did speed up in growth so it saved itself! The be…

Hyophorbe l. setting seed

Hey all, I posted a pic of these a few years back. They're in the central S.D. area; they must be quite old. I happened to be driving by today, and had my camara, so I snapped a quick pic. Actually, they looked better today than I remember them looking; especially since they're in an industrial park, and the maintenence seems marginal, at best. They're probably all 12 - 14 feet tall. Wish I could beam them into my yard! Bret
