New area for palms in Madagascar
by bruno- 24 replies
- 1.5k views
Look at this magnificent landscape overflown with palms and those incredible pandanus on the front of the picture. The palms look like they are ravenea rivularis. Do you think they are? For those familiar with that variety, it seems strange to find them so far on the west coast. The massif Makay is about 130 km from the mozambique canal in the dry region of Mikea where baobabs are found. The pic is taken from my computer. I was watching a DVD on that massif and I saw for just a few seconds those palms. You will have to forgive the bad quality of the pic.

Indoor care for licuala mapu
by texaspalms- 10 replies

I replied to another post with these questions and suppose that it should be different topic instead: Since mapu is so humidity sensitive and tropical in total nature, what can be done to raise them inside when a greenhouse/conservatory is no option? I have a mapu seedling, and while humidity is no issue on the upper Texas coast, winters can see frost fairly regularly in my 9b location. Outdoors in no optoin, therefore, either. Is it possible or should I just pray?

Photo request
by John Case- 20 replies
- 1.3k views
Since I cannot afford a trip to Madagascar, I would like to ask all of you who have a photo of a Beccariophoenix (any species) to post it here. The possibility of this palm to be a substitute for a cocoid looking palm in my area excites me at a number of levels. If you submit a photo (full attribution will be given if any report comes out) please include: 1) species 2) age when taken 3) zone, adjusted for local conditions (for example, you may be in a 9b zone but the site is more of a 10a) 4) alive or dead, and condition if alive I want to collect as much information as I can. The potential for this genus is substantial in my area and I have a lot of inter…

Pollinating Chamaedorea microspadix
by PalmGuyWC- 11 replies
I have numerous Chamaedorea microspadix growing around my garden under taller palms. They will take quite a bit of sun, but look best grown in broken, bright shade. As a filler palm they give my cold hardy palm garden a tropical touch and they are very cold hardy and drought tolerant once established. They have beautiful red/orange fruit which will hang on to the plant for about two years and the fruit adds a touch of color to an otherwise green garden. For me they only bloom in the spring and mine are blooming right now. I try to place the femal plants on the outside of a bed so they can be eaisly seen. I cut off the entire male inflorescence and shake it over the…

What Would You Do?

Several blocks from my house in San Antonio (charitably Z9a, as we are towards the center of town). A Psychiatrist (insert joke here) has bought a house and appearantly paid a landscaper some real money to landscape the front yard. They have installed 2 large foxtails and a huge bottle. I just don't see any way the bottle can survive even our mild Winters, except by building a mini heated greenhouse over it. I doubt the foxtails will make it long term, but they, at least, have a fighting chance for a couple of years. I do not know the homeowner; he is new to the neighborhood. I am considering writing a (nice) letter, pointing the nature of these palms out to him and…

Maintaining palms in pots through the bleak
by Walter John- 22 replies

Dear listeners, It is nigh on winter here in downtown South East Queensland, Australia. Once again, in my usual unplanned way, I have managed to collect a pile of palms in pots and the fear of losing some weighs heavily on my mind yet again. I tell myself each year, “Wal, do not acquire palms till Spring/Summer and only acquire what I will plant”. I never listen. It seems it is the hardest thing for me to understand and manage, the maintenance of life for my collected palms in pots through those cool gloomy doomy days of late autumn through to early Spring. Over water/under water, effects of cold, shade/sun placement, diseases, the usual suspects continue to haunt me …

I gave my Mom a 5 gallon Dypsis lanceolata a few years ago. It grew well behind her pond in filtered light. Now it's up to a large 15 gallon size plant and is getting too large for the spot, so guess who gets it now? Me! Boooyeahhhhhh! Just starting to trunk and sucker.

Physokentia insolita & Linospadix monostachys
by PalmatierMeg- 8 replies
Hello to all, Today is unusually gray & gloomy here (tropical wave) but I am glad for the rain we sorely need. What we need to brighten our day is palm photos. Yesterday I was checking out some of my shade palms & noticed my Physokentia insolita opened a new frond. It has two perfectly symmetrical "windows", one on each side. Very cool. Next to it, my little Linospadix monostachys has a new inflorescense and two more little green spikes on the way. I photographed it. The inflorescense is a long, skinny thing. Beside it is its brown sheath. I hope I get some seeds.

Acclimatising in Hot climates
by Gan Eden- 7 replies

Those who live in hot & dry/Mediterranean parts of the world who grow palms, would you suggest that a good way to harden off palms grown say in shade or "softer" conditions at a nursery, would agree that planting in Autumn (Fall) is a good idea to acclimatise to summer heat and light levels of various sun loving species? I just received some new seeds and am looking for germination tips. I generally have had success with the baggie method, placing the baggies on a water heater. Is there anything specific I should do with the following? Cyrtostachys renda Socratea exorrhiza I also have the following, but pretty much know how to handle these (I think): Sabal uresana - plenty of warmth Trachycarpus takil - room temperature

G'day gang! With the high level of interest in the El Hoagies' "Aussie Adventure in OZ" via this venue's posting, it makes me wonder: how many Aussies are planning a North American palm discovery voyage within the NEXT 5 YEARS, and how many Nordamericanos are planning a trip to OZ in this same future FIVE YEAR period, for palm exploratory purposes? How many IPS members have already made the mammouth voyage? Pablo PS: I cannot wait to make the trip myself, in about three years, if my health improves!

Pestalotiopsis fungus
by palmtreesforpleasure- 6 replies

Have had trouble with 3 New Caledonian species dying, Basselinia gracilis (many times) Basselinia glabrata and Basselinia pancheri, all dying from this fungus, The common denominator was these where germinated and grown for a few years in North Queensland. It is an opportunistic fungus so when the plants are weaker (ie end of winter) It appears to attack small Dypsis as well (causes that 1/2 dead leaf look). I had some dying plants and soil samples tested at the RSBG and the soil is fine, it is systemic and attack the palm. It can be the cause of the sudden death syndrome we have all had, It is in all countries. So who knows the best way to treat it. Alliete is not succes…

In the pot or in the ground:
by John Case- 10 replies
After watching and learning for some time, I am now wondering............outside of the obvious Why would you plant a palm in the ground vs keep it in the can? Certainly, some palms that we own cannot make it in the ground where we live (Bo is the exception to this as he can grow any palm he wants outside) but sometimes I see palms in cans that look to me like they would do well, or maybe better, if they were planted correctly. I am interested in this, as I prefer to put them in the ground and probably should delay or keep them in the can. Right now, the only plams I have in a pot are 3 little Howea belmoreanas that I got as a gift. They would struggle (and pe…

when pink is red and red is orange
by peachy- 3 replies

I have 3 areca vestiara in pots, two were purchased as the red lipstick lookalike species and the third as an orange crownshaft. As they grew I noticed that the orange one (also quite small for its age and possibly not very happy) is a pale washed out orange shade while the two allegedly red specimens are a bright orange colour. The latter being strong growers and healthy looking plants. My little dypsis sp. pink crownshaft has coloured up nicely to a pretty bergundy/ maroon shade nothing like the pink that the name implies. Is this a case of being sold wrongly labelled plants or just inaccurate examples of nomenclature ? I have never seen fully grown plants of either spe…

Need info on Ptychosperma sp. black seed

I picked up a Ptychosperma sp. black seed from some where. I wish I remembered where & from whom. It's a couple years old and is a robust palm. Ready to go in the ground. I'm thinking of planting it but I can't find a pic or any info anywhere. Has anyone heard of this palm? Mine seems to be solitary.
