13 Palms planted today
by Jeff in St Pete- 11 replies

Now that the rainy season is here again, I'm starting to plant many of the palms that I germinated from seed in the last couple of years. These were all oversized one gallon plants (except the Bentinckia) that needed to go in the ground or be moved up to larger pots. I opted for planting them. 1 Euterpe oleracea 5 Archontophoenix tuckeri 1 Raphia taedigera 1 Iriartea deltoidea 1 Socratea exorrhiza 1 Dypsis pembana 3 Bentinckia nicobarica I planted the Iriartea and Socratea next to each other so I can see the differences in them while they grow. I'm having camera issues so no photos yet. I'm hoping to buy a new camera when I go to the states next week. …

Newbie seeking advice on date palm
by KA7AOK- 4 replies

I have a beautiful eight year old palm that for the past two years has been yielding small but plentiful dates (or maybe they are seeds). My questions are 1) Are they edible? 2) Do I have to do anything to make them edible? (Avondale is a suburb of Phoenix.)

Thrinax radiata
by Al in Kona- 2 replies

Below pics show what I believe to be a Thrinax radiata in our garden. Would you agree? It recently was loaded down with an abundance of white seeds making it look quite interesting. Do many other palms have white fruit like this? I know Trithrinax does.

Found this in a community pot of Phoenix sylvestris seedlings. Luckily I noticed before a grub could develop. Seems early to be seeing these already, but it was a warm winter here.

I have been doing a lot of work in the back so far this spring. I didn't realize how much work it is to build a garden until I got a couple of weeks into it. I have put more plants in the ground than I ever have. I don't have much of a plan but it's starting to come together. I still have an enormous amount of work to go. Here are a few pix taken late this afternoon. C. macrocarpa Coocothrinax miriguama P. hillebrandii

Metroxylon vitiense...

Hello! I was thinking of putting a Metroxylon vitiense in a somewhat protected spot at the garden i am making in Pyrgos...Tempratures in the region(not this particular spot,in the general area...) rarely fall below -1C or -2C but every 20years or so,we experience the odd -3C that burns the foliage of the citrus trees at the huge plantations cultivated there...Would this Metroxylon live after such a freeze(no snow, just a few odd grains that melt as soon as they reach any object...)so that i could have it fruiting at some point? At what temprature does damage begins for it? Thank you very much in advance!

Problem with Phytelephas
by Jason in Orlando- 9 replies

The newest leaf on my P. macrocarpa has rapidly died. It dried up, but remains green. Is this likely root rot, or some other issue? It was not left outside during the recent freeze we had here, but brought inside. Not sure if the dry air inside could have caused this, but nothing else seems to have suffered. Thanks in advance for any help. Jason

A new question I am asked.

When people have come to pick up Tahinas from the nursery, or just talking in general, the question of Tahina spectabilis cold hardiness comes up. Since their native strand is northeast of Mahajanga in Northern Madasgascar, one would think they were fairly tropical. They do have a few things going for them. They withstand a season of relative drought, so they have a natural resistance to stress of sorts. They are Coryphoid, and most all palms in the Coryphoid family have some bit of hardiness. Their closest relatives are Kerriodoxa, then Chuniophoenix and Nannorhops. All of these are pretty cold hardy. I had five seedlings in a place where I was working that …

Jack and Lindsey arrived early this morning, got some windy sea water exercise yacht racing, about to have a barbecue, just arrived from the Livistonia australis forest pictures attached of the palm, pictures from Jack camera's. Jubaea growth versus Butia, etc
by PalmGuyWC- 9 replies
- 1.3k views
Sometimes we look at things but we don't really see them. I was making a comparison today between the growth rates between Jubaea and Butias. Most of my palms were planted between 1974 and 1975. Jubaeas have a reputation of being slow growing, and it's true, the first 10 or 15 years they do grow slowly, but once the trunk reaches it full girth, they speed up considerably. Once they have a few feet of trunk, they grow even faster. I would estimate abouy a foot a year or even a little more. My Jubaeas are almost twice the height of the Butias that were planted about the same time. It stands to reason as Jubeas grow to be much taller palms than Butias and they live to be …

Christmas Palm Shocker
by oliver- 13 replies
- 1.3k views
When I first got the palm bug about 7 or 8 years ago, one of my favorite's was the "Christmas Palm" being sold in this area by a single nursery specializing in unusual stuff for South Texas. I bought 10 or 12 and planted them in various areas. All have done very well. I am frequently asked about them and have always told people that they were Christmas Palms or Veitchia merrillii. A few started flowering last year, and this year, I am getting quite a few, what appear to be viable fruits. On a recent trip to the Carribean, there was a tree labelled as a Christmas Palm, and I was shocked to see that the seeds looked completely different. Do I: a) have something differen…

Pseudophoenix questions
by Palm Guy- 33 replies
- 3.6k views
Hi all, I'm currently growing three Pseudophoenix species (lendiniana, sargentii and ekmanii) and have a couple questions. 1. How long till they flower? 2. Which ones can handle full sun at the 2-3 leaf stage? I'm thinking of throwing the sargentii straight into full sun. It has 2 leaves at the moment. 3. Can they handle somewhat wet cool winters? ( about 4-5 inches of rain when temperatures only go as high as 72-74 F and sometimes as low as 55-48 F. Temperatures are more regularly between 69F-60F) Mine have done beautifully on a covered porch but they haven't seen overhead watering as yet. They've survived the cool weather with no damage just concerned the comb…

ID Arenga species
by Walter John- 3 replies

I bought this palm from a local market and it was labelled Arenga engleri. I planted it as 2 footer in a 200 ml pot and it has grown rather large in 4 years. It doesn't seem to be engleri. I have sought ID before I know, I thought I would post an ID seek again as there are way more players on the board now, I would like to give them a shot at guessing this species. One of the lower leaves measures 3.6 metres.
