Planting Dypsis Leptocheilos...

Hi, I'm new to the forum--what a great resource! I purchased a couple of 25g Teddy Bear palms this weekend and was wondering if anyone could offer advice on how these should be planted. This is my first time planting a palm, and I want to make sure these survive! I live in east Fort Lauderdale, FL (about 3 miles from the beach)--I would say our soil has a mostly sand-like quality and drains very fast. The palms are already potted in fast draining sandy soil, so I don't expect that it will be too much of a shock for them to acclimate to this location. Should I amend the backfill with anything (compost, manure, iron, magnesium, potassium etc)? There will not …

Starting new coconut sprouts
by Zeeth- 5 replies
Well, I picked up a green malayan sprout about a month ago and potted it it. The leaves dried up the next day and about a week later whole sprouting part came out of the coconut, along with a terrible smell. I dumbed the mix out, purchased a Jamaican tall and potted it up with palm potting soil. The leaves dried up the next day also, so I brought it inside, put it under a 100 watt full spectrum fluorescent bulb and a humidifier and tried to keep the room above 80 degrees, watering with bath temperature water (warm, but not very hot). It's slowly coming back out, with a growth rate of about 1cm per 24 hours, rising slowly. Why do they automatically shrivel up as soon as I …

Fastest growing Beccariophoenix
by Zeeth- 5 replies
Which type of Beccariophoenix would exhibit the fastest growth speed for Bradenton, Fl? Frost is rare enough that it isn't too much of a worry. It's the farthest north that coconuts can reliably grow in Fl if that gives anyone a perspective on the climate. Also, are they faster in full sun, partial sun, or in the shade?

Butia or ....?
by mikesgirl93- 6 replies

Hi, new here...tried to look at pics and decide, but I'm not even an expert picture looker when it comes to palms. If you have a sec to indulge a newbie, please see if you can ID this palm. A friend that landscaped our place rescued this palm from a languishing yard and replanted it in ours after bringing it back to health in his own. So...it's been planted at least three times! We've had it about two years now. The landscaper called it a Butia...but after looking around here, I see there's more than one species! Any chance you guys/gals could ID this one specifically? If you need more info, please let me know. I just want to take care of it properly. It's abo…

I have had/seen that the more ground dwelling Syagrus dont like to produce much in the way of fruit here, although they will flower constantly like a S. romanzoffiana. I have gotten 3 seed off this S. vagans. Anyone else had this issue?

New Palm Article
by Phil- 4 replies
Group, I thought I'd share with you a new article I posted at my website recently. I wrote this because many customers at the nursery, especially new people, don't really have a good concept of how to do it. I cover all aspects of the process including selection of species for one's area, soil evaluation, acclimation (if needed), drainage, fertilizing, watching for growth, etc. I understand that this may be minimally remedial for many of you, but I think there's always something new to learn, even for me. I hope you like it. Phil Link to article: How To Plant A Palm Tree

New fronds are always exciting. Fresh and (hopefully) still completely perfect. The rain in our area many times adds a different dimension with tiny raindrops on the new fronds. Here are a few. First, the underside of a Verschaffeltia splendida (and a volunteer plant at that!)

HELP! termites in pots
by southlatropical- 9 replies
- 1.5k views
I have all my potted plants (mostly palms) lined up along the fence of my dog yard. I discovered termites in the pots and under the ground. The area is a strip about 3' wide by 20' long. What is the best way to erradicate these things? Imagine if I had started planting things out, effectively 'farming' the termites all over my yard and around the house.

This palm hates me It's slow and never over winters well. I have no canopy. I really want this to go to another home. It's a bit of a novelty for this area so I just don't want to cut it down. It stands about 5' and could be easily dug. I would love to keep it but this yard is small and I can't 'hide' it away. It's sad state is always front and center. Any takers for this freebie?? It used to be a beauty when I bought it from Frank T over at the USF sale now...not so much Right of sabal trunk in front of wamin (sorry no close up, camera batteries died..)

Chamaedorea oblongata
by Kathryn- 12 replies
- 3.9k views
When I was in Belize in 2004, a guy who worked at the hotel gave me five Chamaedorea oblongata seedlings that he propagated. They were probably a year or two old at the time. I gave two away and of the remaining three, one mostly stays indoors and the other two are outside is sheltered spots. One of the outdoors plants had some damage from the cold and the other didn’t. The first inflorescence had just emerged on the inside palm, which is pictured below (I brought it outside to photograph in better light).

As many of you know the Palm Society of Southern Calif. had its meeting and annual spring sale this last Saturday and I managed to take a few pictures. Did anyone else out there take any pictures? I didn't see to many cameras. Considering the crappy weather, we had a great time and the turn out seemed to be better than last year’s event. These pictures were taken before the event began and below is one of the early birds, Ralph Velez.

by Palmarum- 27 replies

The Rare Event 2006: On the evening of October 29th, last Sunday night, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden held their third Rare Event fundraiser. It is an enthusiast's auction that features some of the rarest and most exotic species of plants around. The higher echelon of Fairchild members are invited to this prestigious event, along with members who were kind enough to donate plants. It began around 5:00 pm, with a full open bar and an unending supply of hors d'oeuvres. Jeff & Andrea Searle and myself were invited to come, due to Jeff's donations to the event, and previous ones made to the garden. As I was taking a few photos, one of the garden's volunteers mentio…
