First Online Multimedia Palm Magazine 1 2 3
by Dypsisdean- 91 replies

It's been a while since we discussed the possibilities of publishing a Palm Journal type magazine online. I've been working with some revolutionary software that IMO makes a real nice web presentation in a magazine format. In addition, it allows for the addition and integration of several multimedia features such as audio and video. This first edition has almost 30 pages of articles, photos, games, slideshows, etc. Below are some Low-Res screen captures of the cover and contents page. The feature article is on "Palms in Habitat." There's Jeff Marcus' new slideshow presentation of his exploration to Madagascar, recently given here in Hawaii that includes new photos and…

Mom shows C. seifrezii who's boss
by MattyB- 6 replies

Uncle Glenn gave us this Chamaedorea seifrezii about 20 years ago. I dug it up and moved it to this spot at least 15 years ago. It receives no special care other than water once a week. The larger canes grow up and above the protection of the eves, burn, and eventually die off. I told Moms she should clean out the old dead canes, and prune back the taller ones that are only going to look ratty by the end of summer. So she went to work. Here's the high quality stills, as Kris would say. Getting to work Here she is doing her best impression of Dr. Darian in Madagascar. I'm joking, just let it go. I mean no disrespect.

What's it called? How can I rid my precious soil of it's life sucking wickedness!? It takes over with alarming speed and if it had it's way would kill off any plant in it's path! It flowers at a very small size and speads rapidly needing only a moderate amout of moisture and nutrients to thrive... It even grows on concrete! What the heck is it?!

Hello! I did an inspection round in my garden today because of the bad weather last weak. I found this on my P. roebeleenii. What is it? I suppose it's a begining to a flower? In that case *yahoooo*, because it must mean that my P. roebeleenii likes me (and my basement during winter). //Ciczi

Lucky Palm

Grower here has lots of these coming on for sale and has coined a common name . Big Box stores like our Bunnings want a fancy label . A few visiting Asians were attracted to his larger plant in the garden . SO will this new name be accepted by general population ? Who makes up names like Majestic and Teddybear ? Am I making any sense through this fog of tequila from last nites birthday drinks ? I have just planted a few on the bank in front of my house , maybe I will get lucky . Pictured a nice one growing at Phils Palms & Pots in Mareeba .

Seedlings, juveniles, and adults
by John Case- 5 replies
When does a seedling become a juvenile plant and a juvenile become adult? Is there a line of 'demarcation' where someone can definitively state that 'this palm is a juvenile'? I would like to throw out the first defintions for fodder so the more experienced palmists can rip them up. The first transition from seedling to juvenile is when the plant leaves change from the seedling 'strap' from to the typical form. The transition from juvenile to adult is when the leaves achieve adult size. While it is clear that a palm must be an adult to flower, there are so many environmental reasond that a tree will flower or no flower, that it is not a reliable key to the achie…

Trachycarpus fortunei

Hello! Well spring took off and rainy, windy and really cold weather came instead. We have 11 degrees Celsius... brrr. Now to my question. I have a seedling from a T. fortunei and the little fellow has four long small leaves and number five is coming along great (seedlings is about a year and a half old) . But my question is how long will it take before I actually get a "real" palmate leaf, I mean a leaf characteristic for T. fortunei? What do you guys think? BR Ciczi

I love the look of palms with drooping leaflets. Euterpes come to mind immediately. Can't recall the name of this palm that I photographed in habitat here in Trinidad. What are some of the other palms with drooping leaflets? Euterpes are some of the most beautiful palms.

LY in West Florida
by Zeeth- 4 replies
How far north in Fl has LY been known for the west coast? I'm particularly curious about Manatee and Sarasota county. Also, how far east can they be grown in these counties? As for Manatee county, I've noticed that the closer to the gulf that you get, the more common they are. When you get into Parrish they are virtually non existent except for certain micro-climates on lakes. Would they grow as east as Myakka state park (which is more south than Parrish), or would the distance from the gulf be too much? The 2 questions are connected, as the less resistant Jamaican tall happens to be the easiest to grow this far north.

Palm Maintenance - SoCal Style

So My neighbor asked me for my tree guy to come over and trim his 60' Washingtonias. I figure I would snap some pics of him in action. It took him less than 30 mins to trim four of these monsters. By the time I came back with the camera, he was already done. Here are a few pics of him in the basket. His crane can reach 90' out when it is fully extended. Michael has been trimming Ralph Valez' yard for the past 20 years!

Differing opinions?
by John in Andalucia- 14 replies

The PACSOA website describes Pritchardia remota thus: "These are small palms, 4-5 metres high.." A similar description on the RPS website describes Pritchardia remota as, "a moderately-sized palm, reaching a height of about 10 m (33 ft.)". That to me, is a big discrepancy. Which is nearer the truth, or is it a case of somewhere between the two?

I bought this palm as an oddity (there are rare around here) and figured it might not really grow all that well here. Boy was I wrong. This thing is really turning out to be a real looker! It flies with heat and water. The grow rings are getting ridiculiously far apart. If you look closely in the photo of the trunk, you can see where the new rings, which are still hidden under the old bases) are going to be. I placed this palm in a fairly protected spot in my yard near the house where it would get protection from intense sun and cold. I also have covered this palm on nights where I think it might get into the low 40's or below. So far so good and I hope I can …

Advanced CIDP in tubs
by chris.oz- 11 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi, I have found a supplier who does large CIDP, with 6 ft of clear trunk, in rpoot control bags or big tubs. So clearly this wouldhave to be lifted into place by crane, but I need some advice about ground preparation. One person advised putting a bag of animal manure directly underneath the palm, covering with some soil then planting. Can these be palnted any time ofthe year? What about drip irrigation around the trunk ? The soil is sandy and appears to be very acid. maybe I need to sweeten the soil.
