   I just started a Blog. I wanted to document stuff about the house and have a place to dump my Photographs. I just posted a topic about palms. Check it out. Here's the link: http://freakofnaturezzz.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html I have a bit of a vested interest though-- I will eventually like to include posts of specific palms that I will be planting. My palms are all just seedlings though and I was hoping that other forum members could share pictures of fully grown examples of those palms. hehe

   Anyone got any information or pictures? I am interested to find out more about this palm. In particular habitat and photos of seedlings, juveniles and mature plants. I understand that this one may be close in appearance to Dypsis ambositrae and that young plants share the distinctive colouration of petiole and rachis. cheers Richard

    big sabal frond

    I trimmed my largest sabal yesterday, one frond, the lowest one. I am not big on trimming, but this one was laying on another palm planted underneath. I've posted pics of this sabal before, it has a 2'-2 1/2' trunk thick trunk that is about 2' wide also. The sabal was marked blackburniana, which we know isnt a recognized species. Fronds are kinda large for palmetto and its a fast grower, so Im thinking domingensis, the fruit and flowers are very similar to the domingensis as described in many articles.Here is the pic with yours truly at 6'1" or so holding it. This one has a relatively short petiole, the latest emerging ones are more than 1' longer with even a bit bigg…

    I've been trying to get a hold of some Mauritia flexuosa seeds for the last couple of years. Just recently, Robert in Trinidad sent me a packet of seeds and last week Don (Amazondk) brought me 6 more seeds. Three of the seeds Don brought with him had already started to germinate and have grown fast over the past week. Here's a couple photos of them. I'm excited to finally get the chance to grow some of these beauties. Thanks to Robert and to Don!

    Did you ever notice if Dypsis leptocheilos have white markings on the leaf base as well as the trunk ? One of mine has, check it out. I used to think this was lastelliana as it had no label.

    This year five trunks are in bloom but the bee population is similar to a Queen's when flowering. At first I thought a wayward queen bee had made a home there and a hive was developing. This hasn't happened before. Normal?

    Jubaea Dissapointment

    I mentioned in another thread that one of my Jubaeas is blooming for the first time. The palm is probably about 40 years old, and is a strict growing one with a very thick trunk. The spathe opened this week and Patrick Schafer was here today to emasculate all the male flowers. Another friend brought over a very tall extension ladder to reach the spathe which must be 35 feet above the ground. When Patrick reached the inflorescence it only had about 10 female flowers and all the rest were males. Normally, a Jubaea inflorescence would have around 100 female flowers. Patrick felt it was not worth fooling with so he cut off the entire inflorescence for the pollen. I have an…

    I was downtown today and I just happened to have my camera. I took these for my friend Kris, and for other filifera fans, to give a flavor of the washingtonia filifera, a true desert palm. First in the parking lot on central ave, I noticed a fairly short overtrimmed washie with a thicker than normal trunk for a young tree less than 25' tall. Sorry about the exposure, it couldnt be helped.

    This little Hyophorbe v., one third the size of all the rest, I never paid it no mind, since it's a runt, that is until today, when I was moving stuff around, and spotted it's deformity, sorry the last photo's a little out of focus, I still had the camera on macro, but you get the picture, but this is where it sat, for at least the last ten months, they did not move one inch or were they covered up, during the two nights at 28.4, they had many larger potted trees around them, for wind protection, they are 24 months old, seeds came from Cal., Ed

    At the suggestion of one of the board members, I have repeated this post from "basics for beginners" in hopes that someone knowledgeable about this subject would have a better chance to see it. I have 5 two year old coconuts that seem to be doing well here about 1/4 mile off the beach in south Texas. I have read that coconuts like to be "fertilized" occasionally with seawater, mainly for the chlorine in the sodium chloride, and other trace minerals but I have no idea if the source is reliable. I have seen some of the excellent expert opinions from the veterans on this board and I would like to get your opinion on this matter. Thanks for your help

    Diggin up a Trachy

    I have a Trachy in a spot where I need to get some screening happening. The trachy has no trunk, but about 10 leaves on stretched petioles and the base of it is about baseball size. I bought a 10ft high Rhapis humilis with a root ball about 2'6" ft [ 700 mm ] in diameter to put in its place. So, if I dig the trachy...... am I putting it to death, should it go back in a big pot, or in th ground somewhere ? CHRIS
