Pinanga phillipinensis
by Shon- 8 replies
I have a Pinanga phillipinensis planted from a 7 gallon last year. To shade it out I was using another palm in a pot that was going in the ground this Spring. In yesterdays crazy weather in San Diego the potted palm blew over despite having rocks set up to avoid that very thing from happening. It blew over the Pinanga snapping the main stem in two. The other suckers are all fine but if the main stem is gone will the palm die?

Unarmed Med Fan Palms
by buffy- 16 replies

I have a palm that I bought from David Glover at Tejas Tropicals as Trachy sp. We're both a little curious about it. At first glance, it looks to be an extremely unarmed Med Fan Palm. The hastula detail looks non-descript and a little cock-eyed like I see in the Meds in my collection. The leaf is thicker like a Chamerops. And it also suckers. That said, it's way too small to be a 3.5 year old Med. Fan Palm. This thing is almost completely unarmed, similar to the armament of the Trachys. It looks very similar to the pictures posted by Tobias Spanner. So I either have a unarmed Chamerops or a suckering T. nanus. Any thoughts?

Planting some container palms
by carolinapalms- 2 replies

I have several palms in containers that I was thinking about planting this weekend. Most were planted as seedlings in 1 gal containers about a year ago. I generally like to plant out in the spring in order to establish a root system before the winter; however, I have too many palms in containers. I would like to get some in the ground. Question: I have two more hot months left before the Fall/Winter. Do you think that is enough time for the roots to establish themselves before the cold weather? These palms are cold hardy (Trachy F., Needle palms, Sabal Minor, etc...)

Loxoccocus rupicola
by PalmatierMeg- 34 replies
- 5.4k views
Hello to All, I've had several chances to purchase a Loxoccocus rupicola seedling at a not-unreasonable price. But I have hesitated because I know little about this palm. Will it survive SW FL's hot, humid summers, dry, cool/warm, windy winters and nutrient-poor, sandy alkaline soil (even with enrichment/fertilizer)? I will be able to provide a spot for it in my shade garden on the bank of the Isabelle Canal. But I don't want to devote time/space to it if I have to watch it die a miserable death. I do have some compassion. Expert opinions welcomed. Thanks.

For many, this may be as close as you will come to visiting this garden. It is a rare and unique place with a story (or should I say, 'many stories') surrounding it and the man whose vision and hard work created it. We should all appreciate the Darians willingness to let us get a peek into what is their life's work. Six different Palmoramas - THE DARIAN SUBMONTANE PALMATUM

spent some time with Dr Darian. to say his place is jawdroppng -would be an understatement. his place would be considered a world class botanical garden by any standard, and for sure one of the most impressive residences in southern califrornia. the place lacks nothiing - huge spectacular rare palms, perfect landscaping, and its huge in size really huge for southern california -

Hello, today I receive a Ravenea Rivularis... 3 palms in one pot. The Rivularis are about 120 cm tall. I am not sure, shall I splitt the Plants each in one pot or not? I can't imagine that they growth healthy together in one pot. But, how does the palms react when I may hurt the roots? Here is a photo of the plant even after a rain shower And the 3 trunks: I am looking forward to your answers. Have a nice day! Sandra

Desmoncus

I've been growing Desmoncus orthacanthos and Polyacanthos for a few years now, germinated from seed. These are probably the strangest looking palms I have in cultivation. No visitors to my garden believe they are actually palms... I like the cirri at the end of the leaves, in mature specimens, and also the attractive clusters of red fruit Here's a D. orthacanthos seedling, ready to climb nearby trees:

Pinanga Blue Seed

My favorite "Red Neck" from Loozeana was wondering where I was. So here I am w/a sad story. Back in April I found this sweet palm on the windward side of the island just crying to come to Wai`anae. I could not resist the plea. Two or three days ago I was cutting down some of the scrub trees near by and boom one fell right on this poor baby. I think it will survive Good thing it is a clumping palm. Wai`anae Steve

New Guinea Highlands
by Jonathan- 1 follower

New Guinea is the largest tropical island on earth, has plenty of land over 2000m (6500') in altitude, including some mountains up to 5000m (16,000'), and is largely covered in rainforest - home to about 250 species of palms - so where are the all the cloud forest palms? I'm sure there must be others, but the only species I can think of offhand is Ptychococcus lepidotus, which acording to PACSOA grows at elevations up to 3000m. This is probably just due to my ignorance, but it seems strange that Central and South America and the Himalayas have produced so many species that will grow in temperate climates (Chamaedorea, Ceroxylon, Parajubaea, Trachycarpus, Caryota, e…

water restriction letters
by CromulentKevin- 33 replies
- 1.7k views
So just got the dreaded water restriction letter in the mail. They claim "mandatory" restrictions including only watering between 8pm-7am and new planting are supposed to be "california native". And like a list of 12 other things they claim are mandatory, which are nearly impossible to follow without redoing the entire irrigation system. Yet, by the same token they say that you shouldn't water more than every other day for 10-20 minutes - which is quite a lot more than I'm watering now anyway. . .The 8pm-7am thing is okay for the summer, but would they expect one to water at night in the dead of winter when it is freezing cold? Not being able to plant whatever plants you …

Dypsis decaryi decline
by garrin- 6 replies
I have had a Dypsis decaryi planted next to my driveway for over twenty years, and in the last few weeks more and more lower fronds are turning brown. The new growth, or the few leaves left at the growing tip are still looking very healthy (all four or five of them!). Other plants around it, including vireya rhododendrons, tree ferns, and native trees nearby show no decline in health. I have seen this in other D. decaryi plants in the area, and wonder if any of you know of something that is specifically attacking this species. My tree is over twenty feet tall, with about twelve feet of clean trunk which is now topped by about fifteen totally brown leaves with those fe…

My Areca concinna is very sick
by PalmatierMeg- 2 replies
My A. concinna & I need help. I drove home from our timeshare to check on things here and saw our second A. concinna has gone into a drastic tailspin since last Sat. First I noticed two of its older leaves and the crownshaft had turned brown. When I went out back I notice the crownshaft and trunk had shriveled. The once vibrant green trunk has yellowed and now shows vertical furrows its whole length. My shade palm garden gets irrigation 2x per week and I see indications there have been showers too, so lack of water shouldn't be an issue. All the other palms in the garden look great, including the 1st A. concinna I bought in 2008. I took some photos. Even though it …

newly planted Nypa fruticans
by Eric in Orlando- 2 replies

I have 3 Nypa fruitcans seedlings and I planted 2 out last week to try here. One is planted next to the stream in a fairly wet location (near the Licuala ramsayi in a previous post). The other is in the Garden in a sunny location with good soil that is well irrigated and stays very moist all year. I had previously planted a Nypa here in a swampy location but it died last summer, I think it got shaded out. The 3rd one I have will be kept in a container and placed in one of the ponds until it gets too big.

I'm doing a feature article on nurseries and greenhouses for the PalmMag Online which will include some Palmoramas and slideshows. I thought I would post one of the first Palmoramas for those who have never been inside of Jungle Music's huge greenhouse of palms and cycads. I took six panoramas and only covered about a tenth of it. STEP INSIDE JUNGLE MUSIC'S GREENHOUSE
