Pritchardia seedling yellowing
by John in Andalucia- 1 follower

This is my treasured P. martii that I grew from seed, sent to me by Wai`anae Steve last Christmas, and on the right is how it looks today. I had a thought in the back of my mind when I noticed the tip of the oldest leaf, because the yellow colour looked quite intense. But I just thought it was dying back. Now several weeks later and it has spread, even to the tip of the emerging leaf. The yellowing is punctuated by translucent spots. Can anyone help on this? Should I isolate it from my other greenhouse palms? Will it die if left unattended? Thanks, everyone.

Palms planted between 1866-1884
by swamptreenelly- 7 replies
- 1.1k views
This park was deeded to San Jose by the Overfelt family, pioneers who settled here in 1866. There are 5 jubaeas, Brahea armata and edulis, queen, Butia, Phoenix, Trachycarpus, Washingtonia robusta and filiferas. John Rock's Nursery was close by and he offered these palms for sale. This would be a great place to have a palm meeting! Nelson

While I don't have all the fabulous palms and exotics that the majority of you grow, I substitute with other stuff and still can create a pseudo exotic look. Here's a couple of snapshots from today...it was too nice outside this morning not to take some photos. The tiki hut is a work in progress.

Archontophoenix purpurea
by peachy- 14 replies

My A. purpureas are about 2 metres tall and have been in the ground for 2 months. I grew them in pots, mainly under shade. The crownshafts are still light green, and the leaves are lighter than a normal archontophoenix. Is this a sign of a colour defect or just a symptom of being grown in too shade a situation. Alternately, are all their crownshafts green until they reach a certain age ? They are now growing in 80% full sun. Any information is apprectiated. Peachy

I finally took some time to upload photos. I love looking at everyone's personal paradises on this forum. Here's a couple shots from my Z7/8 yard. It's been a dry summer here. Here's a trachycarpus "Greensboro" planted as a strap leafer. One of my larger washingtonia filibustas. The view from my deck. A trachycarpus wagnerianus in the foreground. ...more to come...

Calyptrocalyx, Licuala, Socratea seedlings
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

On Sunday we drove Rt 997 north from Homestead hoping to visit the many nurseries. Most were closed but one large one had just opened. We drove around it in a golf cart, saw hundreds of coconuts, foxtails and small P. sargentii. While going through the shade house I spotted a line of seedlings: Calyptrocalyx, Licuala and a mystery palm (to me). The owner had forgotten her inventory book so couldn't tell me for sure what they were. I took a chance and bought one of each. Last night she e-mailed me their names. Calyptrocalyx albertsiana. Can't miss that new red leaf. Licuala aurantiaca. It should develop gold/yellow trunks/petioles Socratea exorrhiza. This is a sti…

30 year old Chamaedorea elegans houseplant
by Eric in Orlando- 17 replies

I visited my grandmother in Illinois last week. She has a potted Chamaedorea elegans on her porch that is nearly 30 years old and over 6ft tall. She brings it inside during the winter. We brought this to her from Florida, it was one of those tiny palm-in-a-box plants tourists take home. I've watched grow all these years.

Allagoptera arenaria
by Justin P- 17 replies
- 2.7k views
Hello everyone, I spend a lot of time viewing this site but I do not post too often. I picked up a 3 gallon Allagoptera arenaria about a year ago for $12 and have fallen in love with it. I will post a photo of the palm when I get home. It is a nice double trunk and has about doubled in size since planting it. To me this palm looks a lot like a cycad and has wonderful coloration - both traits that seem popular among collectors. As it seems pretty hardy, I am wondering why I do not see more photos of this palm. Any thoughts or comments? Would you mind sharing photos of your Allagoptera arenaria? Thank you!

I got ~100 of the seeds a while ago, that were misidentified. I am looking at the Dypsis gurus for an ID. Note the fiber starting at the base of the petiole. Reddish emerging leaves. They maybe Dypsis dransfieldii.
