Palm Lifting Sidewalk.
by Paul The Palm Doctor!- 8 replies
Do you agree that a large Canary Date palm had to be removed out of necessity (without notifying homeowner first) because it lifted sidewalk at one corner 2 1/2 inches, and was considered a needless hazard (probably resulting in numerous legal actions & suits,) by our planned community's homeowners' association board. They also said root trimming would only be temporary and the sidewalk would crack over and over, wasting the community's maintenance funds. The Canary Is. date palm was/is about 17 ft. tall with 10 ft. of clear trunk. The tree has already been removed; sod was placed where the tree stood (and now the sidewalk is "back to the way it SHOULD look!" Ha…

Cold-frame Greenhouse Question:
by osideterry- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
Now that it's cooling down, I've actually finished off by putting plastic on the back of the screen door to up the daytime temps. My greenhouse is in shade until about 1pm, and so the palms can handle the half-day of sun (with 30% shadecloth). I'll keep monitoring the highs, and prop the door open during Santa Ana events. Now for the question... My daytime highs are 10-20F higher in the greenhouse, but the morning lows are roughly the same as those outside. Is exposing your palms to a possible temperature range of 35F to 85F in the same day bad for palms? Do palms like Dypsis saintlucei, ambositrae, etc. go more or less dormant when the lows drop into the 40s, even if …

One of my Kentiopsis has a robust second stem growing from beneath the soil line. I haven't seen them do this before. How common is it for them? I washed away a couple inches of soil to see what was going on...

Will these germinate?
by Palm Guy- 3 replies
Hi all, Found 8 coconuts lying on the road where we normally dump the trash. They seemed a bit green to me but 4 out of the eight had the sloshing sound and all are quite heavy. Also most are a bit smaller than I would expect from an Atlantic tall. Will these guys germinate? Cheers, Mike

Update on those path palms
by Walter John- 14 replies
Even in dry times, these guys have kept their composure thanks to plenty of mulch to retain what rains do come along. These are the plants I've grown in an old rose bed and where recently I built a path which won the path of the month award. It was the only entrant and I still had to bribe the judge. My wife is so demanding some times. I refer to these plants as the "path palms". Not a palm, but a pandanus Carpoxylon on the left, Dypsis pembana on the right (starting to rocket away) Dypsis carlsmithii Wadda ya want Max ? Dypsis prestoniana

Watering with fish tank water.
by Zeeth- 15 replies
- 1.8k views
So I've got a 30 gallon natural planted tank, with no carbon filtration, only bio filtration. I've been watering my Kentia with water scooped from this tank for about the past month, and I've noticed that it has picked up growth quite a bit, throwing out a new frond, with a second new one a week or 2 from opening up. I thought this was pretty good growth for a month. So is it beneficial to water it this way? Keith

(its the yellow teeth that always gets me about these little bastards.)

what's this palm?
by MattyB- 11 replies

I collected about 100 seeds off of this palm growing at my neighbor Bob's place. He said it's supposed to be Butia x Syagrus. It pretty much looks like a shade grown pure Butia to me though so I have my doubts. But germination was horrible. I only got 1 seed to germinate! I'll post the pics of the baby below so you can see.

Eye on Bactris
by Gileno Machado- 19 replies
- 3.4k views
This Bactris was germinated from seed that came from the Amazon region some years ago. I remember that it took a real long time for it to sprout and the ID label is unfortunately missing, so I'm not sure about the species. Looking at my old notebook for arriving seeds, it could be either B. maraja, tomentosa or setulosa...any guesses? It's the only individual I have...and one of my favs... I'm growing several Bactris here, including glassmanii, pickelli, setosa, gasipaes, ferruginea, militaris, acanthocarpa, etc...I'll try to post a few pictures soon. Anyone else growing these needle beauties? PS: pot size: diameter ~ 30 cm (+ - 12 inches)

The other day I was going through some of my old photos I burned to a CD backup disc. Since I had just recently made a post about a particular Livistona palm I had (I think the response consenses was it was a mix), I thought I would post the two below photos to show how well the livistona has grown, compared to other plants near it. In the below photos, both taken from approximately the same angle/position, etc., but five years apart, there is a Syagrus schizophylla to the left; unknown Livistona in center; and a Pandanus utilis to the right. The photographic evidence suggests the unknown Livistona out grew the syagrus and pandanus (LOL!).

I just bought a Chamaedorea elegans for $1 at the store, i figured I'd give it a try for that price. What's some info about this? How well do these do inside, and do they do any better as individual plants rather than bunched up like it came? Thanks, Keith

Obviously the wet part of the big island of Hawaii based upon Bo's post in the Bluest Palm Thread But where else do these have a chance outside their native range? Anyone having any luck with this in the foggy, cool, but not cold parts of California? Any chance of this one making it in hot, humid Florida? Thanks for any input.

Manacaria & Copernicia My Neoveitchia Storckii was copletely stripped of leaves in the 300 Km per hour winds of Cyclone Larry in 2006, it is still recovering This plant was sold to me as Manacaria Martiana but I am unsure Manacaria_Seeding Dypsis Ceracea was what I bought this as. Arenga Hookeriana, Pelagodoxa Henryana, Pholidostachys sp, and others. Copernicia Macroglossa Pholidostachys_Sp ?? Oenocarpus_Sp still has the remains of stripped leaves, three and a half years after the Cyclone but is beginning to seed, can anyone identify it for me Thrinax_Sp Calyptrocalyx Kerriodoxa Elegans, los…

The Beautiful Euterpes 1 2
by amazondk- 42 replies

I got a bit inspired while looking at Euterpes in the cold hardiness thread on Euterpe olearcea. The eutepes are such graceful palms that I never get tired of looking at. Here in my area they are one of the dominate plams in the landscape. The euterpe precatoria is the standout and a native. And, people plant the Eutepre olearcea all over the place and they have also escaped from cultivation around the city. You find little spots in Manaus full of palms. This spot is a vacant lot next to a stream through town not far from my house. I drive by here all the time and decided to go take a few pictures this morning. You can see the contrasts between the towering Eu…

Cocoid Opinion
by buffy- 18 replies

From what I've read, both of these have similar cold tolerance. I'm in the process of picking my centerpiece cocoid hybrid for my pool area. I would prefer the most elegant of the two. Obviously, I'd love to see Dick's opinion on the matter, but several of you have seedling large enough to opine. Both of these came from the dedicated hands of Patric. Which of these shows the most grace?

Today as I was walking by my Archontophoenix alexandrae palm, I noticed a hole with a big amber colored sap bubble in the trunk, about 7 feet up (2.3 meters). The hole appeared to be about 1/2 inch in diameter (1.27Centimeters). I found a small diameter stick on the ground and poked it into the sap like stuff, cleaning it from the hole. The hole didn't appear to penetrate more than 3/8" (1 CM) into the trunk. This is a first for me. This has never happened with any of my palms. This happens to be one of my favorite palms and I don't want to risk losing it. Tomrrow I'm going to get a ladder (the hole is over my head and I can't really see inside it) and a paper clip…

This'll drop to the bottom fast, but I've just noticed since I'm out here in Orlando for a few days, WHAT'S UP WITH ALL THE 'HURRICANE CUTS' FOR THE PALMETTOS!!!!!!!!!??????? What are they thinking????? I can go down the street to a non-landscaped area and the palmettos look so much healthier and just overall better than the trees at my "resort". Washingtonias, I can understand because they grow so fast. But why palmettos?????? Sigh...... Well, just venting. Sorry 'bout that. Pat
