ok Jubaea can be worth up to $40,000 what is the next most valuable palm that you could grow to full size over a period of 20 - 30 years and sell for a small fortune?

Pritchardia choice
by Zeeth- 6 replies

What would be a good Pritchardia for a 10a (but preferably 9b) climate, which grows fast and looks tropical. I am germinating Pritchardia pacifica seeds, but I heard they are 10b, so I have doubts about their long term survivability here. Thanks Keith

Tese are two of my syagrus romanzoffiana collection. After two hardly windy nights, this one on the left lost one good leaf. Two new spears are still perfect. This leaf (too young) has broken, i think, because of its lack of flexibility. The other palm has more flexible leafs, when wind attained. I dont know why. Maybe different sub species.

I've been 4 times to Puerto Rico and sure enough, I've visited the magnificent El Yunque rainforest, situated on the mountain that goes by the same name. As many of you probably know, it's an extremely humid, rainy and shady forest, considerably cooler than the coastal Puerto Rico (in el Yunque you may feel cool and sweaty at the same time!), and it's home to prestoea acuminata palm, which is literally abudant in the lower and middle elevations of the mountain. My last visit was on August, 2009 and from the many pictures I took I'd like to share with you the nicer ones.

Ugliest Palm? 1 2
by tjwalters- 1 follower

The Halloween Palm thread got me to thinking... A queen can be scary when neglected, but has the potential to be a beautiful palm. Surely, though, there must be some palms that, even when grown well, are less than attractive (albeit beauty is subjective). Any thoughts on what is the ugliest palm even when well-grown?

Great Cool Palm Climates of the World!
by Jonathan- 11 replies

Just for a bit of fun - and because its raining outside - I thought I'd hop on the net and download some climate information for various locations at the cool frontiers of palm cultivation. I've put this info into some climate graphs that may interest those of you living in these places, or similar climates. Cool_Palm_Climates.pdf My criteria for selection was basically that there had to be a realistic chance of growing a selection of palms beyond the bomb-proof staples like Trachies, Butia and Washies. I've not included inland climates like Phoenix that are generally hot, but with cold, short, sharp winters - I'm more interested in low summer heat climates, with oc…

I missed the AUSSIE Rat Pack by a couple of days it seems, they visited Daishys place in Babinda about 15 mins drive from my place it would have been great to meet them. I had a bit of a drive around the North Queensland area of AUS Myself, to catch up with some palm guru's like Daishy, and Bill Beattie to name a few, unfortunately a number of the people I used to buy rare palms off have sadly passed away in the last ten years like Jill Goetze. Anyway it was good catching up with those that I could and I thought I would share some of my finds. I will post some other…

Actinokentia divaricata

I got this palm over five years ago. It has been slow and isn't holding as many leaves as in the past. The first picture below is from 2005 and it had four leaves with a new one emerging. It has been in the same pot in the same location except for a few days in the garage some winters and I fertilize with Nutricote twice a year. The last few years, it has been holding only two to three leaves - as shown in the three other pictures below taken today. Several weeks ago, the two older leaves were green and healthy looking. As the newer leaf emerged (a nice light red color), the oldest leaf began turning brown. What could be causing this?

Magellan palm link

i have been reading about the portuguese explorer Magellan.he was hacked to bits in 1521 or thereabouts on the island of mactan in the phillipines, but accompanying him on his journey to circumnavigate the globe was someone whose name may sound familiar: Antonio Pigafetta. Pigafetta took a poison arrow to the forehead in the same battle but managed to survive. he stayed on board ship the next day when 30 of Magellans crew went to feast with some fillipino "allies" & were all slaughtered. think about that the next time yer invited to a party.

I was looking on the RPS site and noticed a beautiful new Dypsis listed. It's called Dypsis ampasindavae and grows in the Northern region of Madagascar and on the island of Nosey Be. Anyone have any info on these palms? Are there any in Cultivation? Any other palms come from this locale? Here is a link to the RPS site. http://www.rarepalmseeds.com/shop/DypAmp.shtml

Palms of Southern Asia, 20% off thru January 31
by Dave-Vero- 1 reply
Palms of Southern Asia by Andrew Henderson. The Princeton University Press website is a bit confusing because they're holding a sale; Henderson's book isn't on sale, but the Press is offering "20% off on all cloth titles and 10% on all paperbacks through January 31, 2010." "To receive your discount at press.princeton.edu, enter P03888 in the catalog code box during checkout. Your discount will be applied when the order is processed." Annoyingly, the discount doesn't show when you place the order, and it may take a day or so to get confirmation back from the Press.

Here are some images of C.humilis "cerifera", T. fortunei, S. uresana and B. brandegeii. The first images are in 2005 and the most recent is 2009. 4 years of growth. I know they are planted too close together, and some are being croweded out, but when you only have so much space... you do what ya gotta do. You can barely see the small cold hardy palms in this bed Four years later... voila Another view from 2005 and Today Here is a better image of B. brandegeii

Classic Chambey

After all the PRAs of late, you'd think I would have a break from palms, nah, not me, same with a couple of other ratpackers I noticed. Anyway, back to this thread, I have a new Chambey leaf opened and as is traditional with us here on the palm board, I feel the need to present the event for all to see. Moving into the redness. one more time

Winter protection
by PalmGuyWC- 35 replies

Are you prepared for winter? If you grow palms, unless you live in the tropics, you are probably growing some marginal palms for your climate. It only takes one freezing night to wipe out or damage some of your prized palms. Are you ready for that unexpected early killing frost? It's probably already dark before you get home from work and it's supposed to freeze that night, and in a frenzy your rip your linen closet apart looking for old sheets. You look for a flashlight and the batterys are dead. It is already cold and your shivering, and your cursing yourself for not being prepared. Has this happened to you? Now is the time to avoid the last minute panic. I only hav…

Coccothrinax Argentata
by pg6922- 7 replies

Of all the Coccothrinax, this is one of my favorite. I picked this up at a local Native palm sale and have had it in the ground for almost 15 months. 2 things I have noticed: 1. This C. Argentata is exceptionally faster growing than the other Coccothrinax I have and it carries alot of leaves. and 2. It seems way too young to be sending out inflorescence. I have not have many years of watching Coccothrinax grow so could some of you palm veterans of coccothrinax shed some light on this for me. Thanks, PG This is the C.Argentata when I planted it in August of 2008... This is today October 31st 2009
