Wild Florida Palms

I have long loved Florida native flora, especially palms and orchids. Here are some shots I have taken. I took these photos of wild Roystonea elata a few months ago in the Fakahatchee Strand (western Big Cypress/Everglades). The palm at the base is of course Sabal palmetto. It is hard to get scale from the shots, but these are huge. There are 100s, if not 1,000s of them in this area. Here is a shot of one with a Florida native Encyclia tampensis (Butterfly Orchid) growing on it: Some Sabal palmetto:

freezePruf 1 2

Just came across this product for sale, and it says that Dr. David Francko is the inventor, so I assume that this is the product that we have been waiting for? http://www.liquidfence.com/FreezePruf.html they are taking orders now for a release date of Sept 1. I wonder if this is the only company selling this ? If I understood the directions correctly, it will last up to 4-6 weeks? I wonder how much coverage one gallon ready to use will provide? Those of us with a lot of palms in the ground may use a lot of it!

I've just got some B hapala and B veillardii seeds in from RPS and have germinated both species in the past, but never with great success. Maybe I'm missing something. So if any have some info on how to germinate these, I'm all ears. How have others germinated these before? Best regards Tyrone

I have a single female Ch. radicalis which fruits in the absence of a male. Infertile/sterile fruit. I have read that this is normal for them. Can this happen with Ch. microspadix too? I took some seeds (mature round red fruit) from a big old microspadix in an isolated building area with no obvious/probable chance of being fertilized with anything, and after cleaning and planting them in the usual recomended manner, and a yeay later --- not one strike. What is probably going on here?

Cocos nucifera dwarf red spicata

Calling all photo fanatics: it's time for a photo gallery. Yesterday I went to an open house at a small nursery east of Naples, FL. At first, I didn't find any palms (getting harder to find more exotic species). Then, I noticed this Cocos nucifera designated as "dwarf red spicata". Okay, it's not really red but the trunk, petioles and rachi are a vivid shade of yellow-orange, much more vibrant tha a yellow Malayan (these photos don't do this palm justice). So, I bought it - my third coconut in the last couple months. Last evening we planted it in the front yard where it can receive the attention it deserves. I took this first set of photos after we unloaded our newest …

interesting quote that was told to me by a professional horticulturalist at major public tropical garden over the weekend. the premise was that with 83f days all year and rain every other day - you could put a stick in the ground and it would turn into a tree in no time. he indicted that in hawaii a gardener was someone who cleaned up the unwanted plants and weeds - there was no hobby aspect in getting things to stay alive there. I have been to Hilo myself years ago when Hawaii had the solar eclipse. it was in the mid 80s and rained every other day for 2 hours after the rain it was bright sunshine all afternoon and hot. when I go to RSN and they have ne…

Got a handfull of palm seeds from Cuba. Anyone have info on the perfect temperature for germinating Coccothrinax, Thrinax, and the like? I'm guessing the hotter the better, but how hot is too hot? I don't want to cook them but I want to keep them as warm as possible to get the best germination percentage...

Dypsis cabadae / Cabada Palm
by OverGrown- 2 replies
I have some Dypsis cabadae that came as four planted to a 4 inch pot. They are holding approx 3 fronds each and will be repotted soon. My understanding is that they are a naturally suckering species but can take long to do so. My concern with keeping them as multi planted quads is that once they sucker it may begin to look too clustered. I'm considering separating some to grow as either individuals, doubles or triple. What is the prefered aethetic/planting of these palms? Thanks!

Well, since I passed final, I can do a bit more yard work which I've been itching to do... Anyway, the gangly, upright frond on my "Dypsis prestoOCWSurley" has bothered me for a while, but until I had more open leaves, I left it alone. So today I did it. The subject. Please note, I have always said I trim when the fronds are "brown and down". I think I will modify that to "brown OR down" Please note the subject is most definitely not down. But it is mostly brown...there's still some green, so I was very hesitant.....

Even after our unseasonal warm weather my poor old Bismarckia is as dead as that old german warship ! ( , the spear is rotten mush and there is no part of the palm that is alive so far as i can tell . A cool wet winter 70 days of measurable rain, very overcast and temperatures between 50 -60 Day ,32f was my lowest overnight ,yeah not that cold but chinese water torture for Bizzy ! good news is there is realestate for another big palm , i have seedlings of Brahea armata, pogos syagrus abreojos, Becariophoenix alfredi, sabal palmetto 5 gallon ,or 10 gallon butia capitata. It is an allday sun sheltered from wind position . I would have planted my parajubaea…
