Dypsis cabadae / Cabada Palm
by OverGrown- 2 replies
I have some Dypsis cabadae that came as four planted to a 4 inch pot. They are holding approx 3 fronds each and will be repotted soon. My understanding is that they are a naturally suckering species but can take long to do so. My concern with keeping them as multi planted quads is that once they sucker it may begin to look too clustered. I'm considering separating some to grow as either individuals, doubles or triple. What is the prefered aethetic/planting of these palms? Thanks!

Hi allz - Verena decided to buy a further and new palm, the in the subject mentioned Syagrus ruschiana. Not at least because it looks a little bit like a Lytocaryum. A friend of mine bought a couple of Joeys and a Kerriodoxa from Bill last week and would like to hear some advice about growing them in Lake Worth. How much light and water, what is their hardiness, and growth rates? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Special thread for Jeff Rood, Shon , others...

Well, since I passed final, I can do a bit more yard work which I've been itching to do... Anyway, the gangly, upright frond on my "Dypsis prestoOCWSurley" has bothered me for a while, but until I had more open leaves, I left it alone. So today I did it. The subject. Please note, I have always said I trim when the fronds are "brown and down". I think I will modify that to "brown OR down" Please note the subject is most definitely not down. But it is mostly brown...there's still some green, so I was very hesitant.....

Even after our unseasonal warm weather my poor old Bismarckia is as dead as that old german warship ! ( , the spear is rotten mush and there is no part of the palm that is alive so far as i can tell . A cool wet winter 70 days of measurable rain, very overcast and temperatures between 50 -60 Day ,32f was my lowest overnight ,yeah not that cold but chinese water torture for Bizzy ! good news is there is realestate for another big palm , i have seedlings of Brahea armata, pogos syagrus abreojos, Becariophoenix alfredi, sabal palmetto 5 gallon ,or 10 gallon butia capitata. It is an allday sun sheltered from wind position . I would have planted my parajubaea…

My little Coconut is growing up
by pg6922- 20 replies

Howdy Yall, As with many palm lovers, my favorite palm is the Cocos Nucifera. Being able to grow this palm is a real treat and even though there are so many down here in SW Florida, I try to never take them for granted. This is the story of my first coconut that I found floating in the water. It really is amazing how fast they grow in the right conditions. My little coconut is now showing its first signs of reproduction. Truly a fascinating palm. I dont think my Veitchia Arecina is even this quick...amazing growth from seed to a little over 2 years. 6-9-2007 10-22-09

Insolation
by AJQ- 6 replies
- 1.2k views
I was wondering what the effect of Insolation on our palms was when the Skies were Overcast? Whilst I appreciate that us mere mortals can still get badly sunburnt from the UV's, even on overcast days. (My father can testify to that, as he got badly burnt in Singapore many moons ago when he was in the Navy.) Do the same UV's cause similar damage to our Palms too? Or are they subject to a different sort of radiation that is shielded by cloud cover? The reason I ask is that this Summer, or lack of one, has been pretty much overcast for about 3 months, with constant rain and virtually no sunshine at all. The two new plantings, a Rhopie and an Archie ( illwara) hav…

Yes, a world first, a personal best and better yet, more palms to populate the planet. They said it couldn't be done, but this brave little woman faced the odds, accepted the challenge and now is proud to present to the world at large, her new baby palms. Unbelievable I know, strange but true, self confessed palmicidal murderess of many, known to most as Peachy, has actually germinated her very first seeds ever. Please dont pour accolades upon this modest head, (well okay but just a few), it was nothing really just a bit of medium, a few seeds, bit of water, you know how it is, me not being one to boast and all. I thank for the forthcoming praise in advance. Peachy

I took these pictures today when I went to work. They were actually taken in Pasadena, Texas. Here is a nice size Majesty Palm (Ravenea rivularis) about two blocks from my job. Close to the last picture I found 3 Royal Cuban Palm (Roystonea regia) Check out these old palms. There are two roads in this area that the medians are both lined with these old palms loaded with seeds.

Townsville City Council has developed botanical collections in three separate gardens which together form Townsville Botanic Gardens. The three gardens are Queens Gardens, Anderson Park and The Palmetum and all three are internationally recognised. Having focused on the Palmetum under a separate thread, here's a view of Anderson and Queens parks, mainly Queens, a wonderful smaller park just a couple of blocks back from the strand. ANDERSON PARK

Port Hinchinbrook Calyptrocalyx

In the Travel Log section there is an old post about a garden in Port Hinchinbrook Port Hinchinbrook Thread that I helped landscape with my mate Mike (Newcal). It has now been two years since we did the work, and everything is growing well. Some of the most impressive palms there have been the Calyptrocalyx that we planted down the side passageway next to the house. These are such underrated palms and should be more widely planted... Pritchardia Gaudichaudii

I was at the book store over the weekend and picked up a palm book called: "Cultivated Palms of the World" by Don & Anthony Ellison. Very high quality pictures in it. Anyway, I was looking at a series of pictures on Pritchardias when I came across the Pritchardia Gaudichaudii. It had very erect fronds and looked quite different from the other Pritchardias. Is the name a synonym of another palm? I tried googling it and did not find much about it. There were some references to P martii, but the picture I saw did not look like any P martii I've ever seen (which is not much...). Thanks in advance, Joe

After we went to the Townsville palmetum, we had a quick shower and met John Dowe at his favorite Chinese restaurant for dinner. After sharing some of his knowledge, he showed us his completed coloured manuscript for his soon to be published new book, Australian palms, wow, what a reference book it is going to be, Pictures and natural growing locations of every known Australian palm, pictures of their flowers and all sorts of details, Now for those like me who look at Livistonia and try and remember which one is which species , having pictures and simple explanations for anyone to follow really appeals to me. 300 hundred pages, years of research in the field and molecu…

Dypsis Albofarinosa

An old leaf fell off of what I think is Dypsis Albofarinosa and this is what I found. Looks like I might get some seeds! This palm has aborted a few times but this time it looks like it may pull it off! I'll keep you all posted. The crown on this palm gets super glaucus a few weeks after an old leaf falls off.
