Its planted in a good very well drained mix in a tall pot and is in a sheltered area of my the garden that recieves filtered light i give it a weak dose of liquid seaweed and powerfeed every month but alas is rather dormant . Any ideas . our climate here should be perfect with little temperature extremes ,humidity above 60 % most of the time cool summer nights winters between 50 -60 summers 65- 80 f . Like SFO . Baby Palm planted

So I got some seedlings of D. decipiens about 4 months ago and planted them in pots until I knew where I wanted one to go. Recently I just had an area in my yard open up (between my pond and swimming pool) where I decided I would like to plant it. The area is a bit moist since the pond (its a liner pond) overflows a little bit so I dug the hole deep and put in granite rocks and pea gravel (1 bag each of 25 lbs). The soil that was in the pot I let disperse itself among the gravel since it wasnt extremely well rooted in the pot (i think it was too wet) but I didnt pull any soil away from the roots. The heel is now not in any soil but in direct contact with the gravel and gr…

I have a medium sized howea inside my home, for two months ago. It is trunked, yellow and a little green. Has 5 leafs and a new spear coming. Light enough. Humidity enough. But recently some short signals of whar i think it is this disease. I will upload photos in 24 hours. Do you find apropriate the treatment to be copper sulfate? And must i cut the only leaf affected? Just in the trunk, behind old parts of old leafs already cut, some spors, pink coloured. Thank u

Planting Palms : "your papers please...." 1 2

Urban Rainforest Steve warned us this was going to happen......check it out: from The North County Times newspaper, November 14, 2009 issue: Installing or replacing landscaping is about to get more complicated and potentially more expensive for some property owners in San Marcos. The city is developing an ordinance that would require the landscaping around new homes, apartment complexes and other developments to be drought-tolerant ---- if a developer is installing the landscaping, if the landscape area covers at least 2,500 square feet and if the project needs city approval. The proposal would also apply to new homes whose owners are putting in the landscapin…

Please help pick a palm

Just cleared space for another large palm in front of my house. So come March I need to plant something. My wife's been pushing hard for Ravenea rivularis (she is in love with them). I have two problems with it: 1) another pinnate palm would not look good with 2 queens, 3 pigmy dates on the left and a Butia capitata with 10' fronds on the right; 2) I don't want another palm that's all over the neighborhood. Finally I was able to convince her to get a fan palm, but still need to pick one. The requirements are below: Location requirements: long-term zone 10a survival must tolerate full sun for much of the day soil doesn't drain very well size limitation (anything bigge…

I have what I believe to be an Amazonian Starnut Palm (Astrocaryum huicungo) seed. I have no idea what this palm looks like. I cannot find any photos on the internet. Can someone post a photo of the seeds and the palm. I would also like to know more about the palm itselg, like it's size hardiness, etc. Thanks

Rusty's neighbor is doing some construction which forced Rusty to dig a few palms that were on the neighbors side of the property. In the spirit of giving Rusty played Santa and gave it to Aaron (Bags). Aaron was actually away at the time so Rusty and I took the liberty to plant it for him. I really hope it pulls it off, its late November but so far temps haven't been too cold. Here's a few pics.

Confirm of Palm Id

Well my big Caryota is finally seeding and I imagine I'll get a few more months of enjoyment before it becomes Tiki wood. I think that this is a C. no but I just want to make sure. This palm was in my garden when I bought my house, so I have no idea of its origin or what it was sold as. It is about 25' tall. Its hard for me to get a good shot of it since its kind of right in the middle of my jungle, but if there is not enough info in the two attached pics I can try to get some better shots. Now here is a really strange occurrence. Right across from this palm is a large (18') C.mitis clump that has also decided to reward me with seed as well. The death of this clu…

Kopsick Palms
by Zeeth- 26 replies

Tomorrow I'm going to Kopsick in St. Pete. I'll bring my camera, so if there's anything you haven't seen in a while, let me know and I'll try to snap a pic. Are there any exceptional palms there I need to go see? I've been there before, but I only know what's really rare and what isn't to a certain extent. My 2 main goals are to get seeds or seedlings from their African Oil Palm, and see if the 2 coconuts have any fallen coconuts under them. Are there any palms there that are seeding, yet rare in Florida? I'll try to make a travel log post when I go. Thanks for any tips Keith

So today we were looking at the neighborhood where we intend to buy property and live, Twin Rivers in Parrish, Fl. It is right by the Manatee river, and there are 1-2 acre lots available and there is over 3x the amount of land devoted to nature trails and preserves than houses. My dad and I were walking along the trail that leads to the river, and there are 4 different areas of land that I noticed, Wetland, Hardwood Hammock, Savanna, and Riverside. I was walking along and thinking about things I could plant out here that would look good, fit into the land type, and wouldn't harm the native vegetation. Here's a list of possible things to plant in these areas, most of these…

Looking for a certain Borassus photo.
by John in Andalucia- 10 replies

I'e spent a good hour searching through threads (it's easy getting distracted reading threads about SE Asia!) looking for a Borassus photo that one of our members posted, maybe last year. It was a close-up of a young Borassus showing the orange and black of the petioles, and was immediately followed by some swooning comments. It was posted by a regular, so if you read this, I want to see it again! I meant to add, I think it was posted by one of the US members, Florida?

High nighttime humidity

Recently, the humidity has been very high at night, from 95-100%. Right now according to weatherbug it's 70.4F with a heat index of 76 with 100% humidity. It's not raining, so I guess it's fog or something? It's been going on for a few weeks, so is this good or bad for the growth of palms? Keith

Tahina spectabilis article and Google earth
by Logolight- 13 replies

I just read the article on the new Tahina palm in the March issue of Palms. On the suggestion that you may see the palm in Google Earth, I took a look. Now the article also mentions that Bismarkias are abundant throughout the area and could be confused with Tahina. So when I zoomed into the "predicted area" shown in the article, I discovered that the region is covered in what looks to be thousands of Bismarkias. It's truly amazing if they are actually Bizies. You should take a look, it's really neat! Dave

Borassus flabellifer
by PalmatierMeg- 8 replies

One of my Borassus flabellifer seeds (thanks, Kris) - regular, not Big Mama - germinated after just a couple weeks. I looked at it again yesterday and realized it had to go in the ground (no deep pot acrobatics for these babies). We picked an open spot (i.e., yanked up and transplanted a non-producing Persian lime tree), rototilled and prepared a fresh bed of earth and set this little tribble free. Kris says it won't show a spear for 6-8 months (next year's sweltering summer) so we covered it with a layer of mulch, then surrounded it with several stakes. It should have no trouble through the winter as the ground doesn't get close to freezing here. Borassus flabellifer…

I went on the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland today. Very tropical looking place (especially for southern CA), I'm not complaining but I didn't notice any particularly unusual palms. Seemed to be mostly Kentias, Kings, Queens, Pygmy Dates, etc. Did I miss something? Was this 'garden' started in 1955 when the park was built?

Is it possible to face frost threat? 1 2
by Rafael- 45 replies
- 4.7k views
In May i bought one archontophoenix alexandrae (30 cm trunked/base and 4,5 m tall), wich i show on this photo. I am still looking for one archontophoenix cunnighamiana (not easily found here), wich i know is more frost tolerant. Well, here we have maybe 10/20 frost nights a year. Half of them the lower temperature raise -4 C. I think this one will face frost strongly. However i wonder if we can do anything to face the frost, concerning to a big palm like this. Does anyone knows any method to face this problem. SOS, frost is coming in about 15 days!!!

Cone shaped seedling containers

Hello all, I am looking for Cone shaped containers. I saw them at a palm nursery and thought they were a great idea. Takes up less space and allows the roots to grow straight down. Does anyone know where I can buy some? I'm a "newbie" to the forum. Thanks Arlene

The great palm fairy mystery

Why is it so ? I have palms here that cost me a bit of money a few years ago, and over time they have started to grow and I am pleased with the results. That is UNTIL on visits to the nurseries I see palms for sale, bigger and in some cases much bigger than mine at home. Usually they are in the same sized pot mine came in and about the same prices. Do they hide stuff from me and then only put them out when they know I already have one ? How can they be bigger than mine that has been growing for years, and in a small pot too. I am convinced there is an evil palm fairy running around shrinking the palms it knows I am going to buy. Does this ever happen to you ? Or is the cu…
