I personally feel all the pain our Floridian brethren are suffering right now. You folks kept us Californians hopeful with your kind thoughts and prayers in '07 so now's the time we reciprocate.

Here are some images in my garden after the recent arctic blast that dropped temps to as low as 15.8°F in my central city Dallas location. We have recently had mild weather with one day last week at 65°F. I've tried to include images during the freeze and the ones I took today for comparison. More damage may continue in the weeks to come. during the freeze This is the aftermath... not too bad for C. microspadix B.armata and C.humilis Today after the cold

Trachycarpus princeps growth performance.
by garrytsen- 6 replies
- 3.4k views
A friend raised me a very interesting question that some Trachycarpus princeps have small ,broad and stiff leaves whereas others have soft, slim and long ones. I think there are a dozen of factors affecting the growth performance of T.princeps. 1. Nutrition. more nutrition T.princeps is fed with , the broader its leaves are.Nutrition makes a big difference in this respect. The seedling I grow separately in a pot has broader leaves than the ones growing in the same pot altogether. Very interesting different look T.princeps demonstrate under different conditions. It is noticed that some seedlings are bluish with little white stuff even on the upper side whereas others have…

The Palm Journal - Issue 193, all about Pritchardia
by Al in Kona- 6 replies
Recently received my copy of Issue 193 of "The Palm Journal" published by the Palm Society of Southern California. This issue is devoted exclusively to the genus PRITCHARDIA and has got to be the best information put out to date on these palms. Don Hodel wrote two feature articles in this issue filled with color photos on every page. IMO, it's a must for anyone interested in Pritchardias. The beautiful front cover photo shows Paulen Sullivan's Pritchardia woodfordiana. However the name, P. woodfordiana, does not appear again anywhere else in this issue. When I Googled this name, it says this Pritchardia comes from the Solomon Islands. It also says this may just …

Pine Island, FL
by tropical1- 20 replies

Ok, after this last deep freeze I think I want to take plunge and buy some land on Pine Island. Does anyone on the board who lives down there have an opinion of what to look for in terms of a good palm growing property. I have heard the north end was warmer but during this year it seemed the temps were higher on the south side by St. James. i assume also that the damage out there was minimal this year. K

After reading another thread where someone said Medjool Date Palms (Phoenix Dactylifera) grow slow, I decided to post this and show everyone how mine have grown. These are planted in my backyard here near Enterprise in Southeast Alabama in the United States. I purchased these from TyTy nursery (somehow I had a GREAT experience with them?) in late May 2007. This first pic is of one of them (at center left) from a week or two after it was planted (the other one is almost identical both then and now). This second pic is the same palm from only 2 years and 3 months later. Keep in mind we have some extreme high humidity and some pretty low temps during the winter …

Santa Marta is the name of my future home and I began planting a few palms during our last rainy season. We have had incredible winds as a result of the cold front that caused so much damage in Florida.I wanted to see how these recent plantings are coping with minimal care. The normal temperature range is 65-85F with rainfall near 150+ inches falling March-December. There are mists and drizzle infrequently during the dry season Jan-February. Fuego Volcano - this is an active volcano. My farm is on the ridge at the base of the volcano Areca triandra Caryota obtusa - gigas Licuala lauterbachii

Hello to all my fans, how you doing Jonas ? After waiting and waiting and praying, we finally received some good rains so I got down and dirty and dug up some palms for the journey north to my new place. Here's some photos. A half a metre of potting mix I picked up in the Toyota ute, here it is after several usages. Carpoxylon, Dypsis carlsmithii and Dypsis prestoniana ready to go. Nice orange crush colour appearing on these two Dypsis mentioned above. carl preston

Post-freeze Care

Now that the weather is returning to normal , what extra care does a cold recovering palm need? A little extra water? Less water? Fungicide? Trim off all necrotic fronds? Do nothing? You get the idea. Any help from the more experienced would be appreciated by many!

Hybrid Cocoid report
by PalmGuyWC- 2 followers

This will be my last Cocoid hybrid report for 2009 unless something dramatic happens, like a severe freeze. Patrick Schafer was here this week collecting the late maturing seeds for 2009. We had a late, cool spring in N. Calif., almost a month late, so everything is a little behind this year. Some of the late blooming palms, mostly Syagrus, have only partially mature fruit and, now that cold weather has arrived, the imature seeds will quit growing until warm weather arrives next year. While Patrick was here he put shrouds around the fruit to protect them from frost. Patrick has asked me not to be specific about any hybrids as it's always hit and miss, and he doesn't li…

Okay, as we all know (DFW palm nuts) we are about to be hit with a nice cold refreshing breeze out of Canada (15F - 17F) it's only going to be this low at night, I have no idea how long though . I'm not sure what I will need to protect, currently I have a 2ft trunk California (its a true California), 2 butia's, 1 Texas Sable , two meds, and two windmills and a 3ft trunk Mule Of these which do i need to protect, I know the Mule is at the top of the list, but what else? I plan to wrap the mule in christmas lights and a plastic tarp around the trunk area, any other suggestions or any tried and proved protection ideas? I have to say that this winter has been the worst since…

After seeing the temps drop, I hustled and brought a lot of stuff I never thought I would inside. I wrapped everything I could wrap with what I have. I also took some pictures today of plants that have done great but may be their last day. I feel like Liam Neeson in Schindler's List at the end. Some things are 100% on their own....and I can't replace them. Definitely won't be sleeping tonight.

SFPS Holiday Party Auction Palms
by Ken Johnson- 4 replies

I promised Paul D that I would get some pix of this yearly PRA but was surprised when they asked me to be the auctionier. I did stop long enough to snap these three Dypsis. I told the crowd that I would post them here so the Californians could see them. The perception here is that Californians are crazy about Dypsis and that here they are not apreciated as much. This may or may not be true but some of the crowd got a giggle from the story and may lurk here to see what's up and if we get real lucky they will post some pix of Dypsis and other palms in thier gardens! That is Claud Roata from Action Theory holding the palms. He and many others donated about 100 palms and 1…

lets talk about palm prices 1 2
by trioderob- 1 follower

lets talk about the general subject of palm prices - was at a nursery on friday and was thinking about costs,,,,,,, how much the palms were and how much the price go up as the palm size increased. so many of the smaller palms were $60 -100 on the smaller (not seedling) sizes but the really nice size plants were $600-1000 these palms had many feet of truck so what this thread is about is how you guys and gals view the high costs of the larger plants. do you see the high prices as fair because of the time and grief the grower went thru or do you find the prices of the larger palms to be excessive ?
