My new project - Santa Marta
by Really full garden- 35 replies

Santa Marta is the name of my future home and I began planting a few palms during our last rainy season. We have had incredible winds as a result of the cold front that caused so much damage in Florida.I wanted to see how these recent plantings are coping with minimal care. The normal temperature range is 65-85F with rainfall near 150+ inches falling March-December. There are mists and drizzle infrequently during the dry season Jan-February. Fuego Volcano - this is an active volcano. My farm is on the ridge at the base of the volcano Areca triandra Caryota obtusa - gigas Licuala lauterbachii

Hello to all my fans, how you doing Jonas ? After waiting and waiting and praying, we finally received some good rains so I got down and dirty and dug up some palms for the journey north to my new place. Here's some photos. A half a metre of potting mix I picked up in the Toyota ute, here it is after several usages. Carpoxylon, Dypsis carlsmithii and Dypsis prestoniana ready to go. Nice orange crush colour appearing on these two Dypsis mentioned above. carl preston

Post-freeze Care

Now that the weather is returning to normal , what extra care does a cold recovering palm need? A little extra water? Less water? Fungicide? Trim off all necrotic fronds? Do nothing? You get the idea. Any help from the more experienced would be appreciated by many!

Hybrid Cocoid report
by PalmGuyWC- 2 followers

This will be my last Cocoid hybrid report for 2009 unless something dramatic happens, like a severe freeze. Patrick Schafer was here this week collecting the late maturing seeds for 2009. We had a late, cool spring in N. Calif., almost a month late, so everything is a little behind this year. Some of the late blooming palms, mostly Syagrus, have only partially mature fruit and, now that cold weather has arrived, the imature seeds will quit growing until warm weather arrives next year. While Patrick was here he put shrouds around the fruit to protect them from frost. Patrick has asked me not to be specific about any hybrids as it's always hit and miss, and he doesn't li…

Okay, as we all know (DFW palm nuts) we are about to be hit with a nice cold refreshing breeze out of Canada (15F - 17F) it's only going to be this low at night, I have no idea how long though . I'm not sure what I will need to protect, currently I have a 2ft trunk California (its a true California), 2 butia's, 1 Texas Sable , two meds, and two windmills and a 3ft trunk Mule Of these which do i need to protect, I know the Mule is at the top of the list, but what else? I plan to wrap the mule in christmas lights and a plastic tarp around the trunk area, any other suggestions or any tried and proved protection ideas? I have to say that this winter has been the worst since…

After seeing the temps drop, I hustled and brought a lot of stuff I never thought I would inside. I wrapped everything I could wrap with what I have. I also took some pictures today of plants that have done great but may be their last day. I feel like Liam Neeson in Schindler's List at the end. Some things are 100% on their own....and I can't replace them. Definitely won't be sleeping tonight.

SFPS Holiday Party Auction Palms
by Ken Johnson- 4 replies

I promised Paul D that I would get some pix of this yearly PRA but was surprised when they asked me to be the auctionier. I did stop long enough to snap these three Dypsis. I told the crowd that I would post them here so the Californians could see them. The perception here is that Californians are crazy about Dypsis and that here they are not apreciated as much. This may or may not be true but some of the crowd got a giggle from the story and may lurk here to see what's up and if we get real lucky they will post some pix of Dypsis and other palms in thier gardens! That is Claud Roata from Action Theory holding the palms. He and many others donated about 100 palms and 1…

lets talk about palm prices 1 2

lets talk about the general subject of palm prices - was at a nursery on friday and was thinking about costs,,,,,,, how much the palms were and how much the price go up as the palm size increased. so many of the smaller palms were $60 -100 on the smaller (not seedling) sizes but the really nice size plants were $600-1000 these palms had many feet of truck so what this thread is about is how you guys and gals view the high costs of the larger plants. do you see the high prices as fair because of the time and grief the grower went thru or do you find the prices of the larger palms to be excessive ?

Howdy Jeff! I saw this pics while looking for your avatar photo and was curious if you ever ID'd them. This first one looks like Dypsis highland redneck/mealybug. Same thing growing next to my driveway. Long petiole, leaves at the very end. http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?ac...post&id=172

My Results so far Testing Freeze Pruf
by rozpalm- 2 replies
I bought a gallon of Liquid Fence FreezePruf, mixed it and applied it to certain plants 2 days before the cold weather started in January. It was applied in the middle of the day when the temperature was around 68-72deg. I applied it as liberally as I could trying to cover both sides of the plants leaves. I tested it on palms and other tropicals. The lowest temps they saw was 32deg for 4 hrs followed by 34deg low that lasted for 4hrs the next night. All have endured this never ending cold front and have spent 7 days of the last 12 at temps below 38 deg at night for at least 8 hrs. Obviously, not the most extreme temperatures but certainly below the zone 11 type temper…

Plant growth lights

Well, we don't all live in tropical climates, so that means starting seeds, overwintering, and sometimes just growing some palms indoors. I was just looking over the plant grow lights on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=sear...p;x=14&y=23. Lots of stuff here, with lots of possibilities. Anyone using these, particularly the newer LED stuff?

Immature seeds and cold weather
by sarasota alex- 2 replies

Do you think that seeds that are still on the trees right now would still be viable after these freezes? I think the subtropicals should to be fine, but what about the more tropical species. Also plants that barely survive, will their ability to reproduce in the future be affected?

Coconuts about to germinate
by Zeeth- 1 follower

I noticed something with one of my coconuts this week. The water inside it is slowly starting to jelly, as when I shake it I feel a lump inside it. Every day I check the coconut, and I hear less water and more lump, and today there is mostly lump. Does this mean that it's going to germinate soon? I noticed when I got my germinating coconuts from Peter Pacific, there was a lump in them when shaken, so I assumed that the lump had something to do with germination. Any input into this? Thanks Keith

I live in Hattiesburg, MS zone 8A. I have 8 large Cabbage Palms; 5 have will have been in the ground here 4 years on April 1st, and three will have 3 years in the ground on the same day. They were harvested near Homestead, FL from what I understand. They're all very nice looking, healthy palms. Our low temps have been 18, 15, then 17 degrees the last three nights. Before and after the 15 degree night it didn't get over freezing during the day here. It rained prior to the 18 degree night. It was around 20 for the low for 2 or three nights before this cold spell and it is predicted to be 19 tonight and then get back to our normal weather. Temps a few degrees under …

The Summer Doldrums 1 2

This thread is not about a specific palm, but about my entire garden. About this time of the year I run out steam and neglect my garden. It's to hot to work outside after about 10 AM. Things sort of go to hell fast. I neglect mowing, pulling weeds, and careing for my plants and the container plants look bad from lack of watering. My garden guy quit on me several months ago and I can't keep up with it alone. A group of San Francisco gardeners are visiting me this weekend and they work in fancy estates with manicured gardens. My place looks awful and I'm sure they will gag at my lack of maintainance. My solution is to have work force today of 5 Mexican guys who have work…

So, today I am looking at a high of 45 (maybe) and another low of 22 tonight, but spring is just around the corner and it is time to plan. I just checked my fertilizer stocks. I dug in a little compost where I know I will be planting a new palm this year. Its a great time for early soil prep, as you know. I even went out and visualized a new bed to go along with one that I will be redesigning. With so many losses and misc things out of the way, it will be easy to do some re-designing where needed. What new things are you gonna do in the garden this spring?

Tropical Palms(so far)

My thoughts during this incredibly long cold event experienced here in South Florida have alot to do about the effect that this inordinately long period of cold but not freezing temperatures will have on the multitude of mature and well established Tropical Palms. I took shots today centering on Coconuts and in an area that I will be able to watch closely. To that end: More: More: More:

Suggestions for compiling Freeze Damage Data
by Alicehunter2000- 10 replies
I was thinking today of what will be useful in the coming weeks for the Freeze Damage data that will come pouring into Palmtalk. I think we should have some standardized blueprint or model so that the data can be utelized in the best and easiest way. My suggestions are as follows. Low Temperature Duration of freezing temperature (# of days and # of hours) Frost or No Frost Wind speed Precipitation Measures taken to minimize damage (i.e sheets, Christmas lights etc.) Resulting condition of the palm with percent damage I would also suggest taking a picture of the damaged plant Also I would suggest that when compiling your weather related data for your partic…
