Factors affecting cold hardiness
by Zeeth- 10 replies

There are certain factors I know of, such as proper fertilization, but what are some others? Are palms better able to take cold if given more CO2 rich air? What exactly makes palms like Butia and Jubaea so hardy, while coconuts fry at the first sign of frost. Your opinions? Keith

I am finishing up all the Beccariophoenix articles on Wikipedia (I'll go ahead and add it all to Palmpedia when I'm done too) and for that I would like a good picture of Beccariophoenix alfredii. Preferably relatively old and 5+ feet tall, habitat pictures would be great also. Thanks, to see the article on B. alfredii that I have written, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beccariophoenix_alfredii I wanted to add a B. alfredii picture, as well as a B. madagascariensis picture (which I already have) to here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beccariophoenix and in the Selected Genera section of this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arecaceae Thanks for any help, …

Advice on CIDPs - Is This A Good Deal?
by Joey Powell- 4 replies
Okay so I visited a local area nursery today and was able to get a deal? on two decent sized Canary Island Date Palms. Keep in mind these are not common palm trees here. We are a zone 8a/8b, and you just don't see them this big for sale anywhere around here... As you can see these sustained some damage during the recent freezes, which were unusually cold (lows of 15 and 17F) for our area. I had been looking at these back during the last two summers there...they did not look like they were extremely healthy. I think they would have fared much better if they had been given nutrients (palm fert, magnesium) and regular watering and were healthy. So the deal i…

Scotts Miracle Grow "Shake & Feed" Fertilizer
by BlufftonSC- 11 replies
- 1.6k views
I'm trying to put the big freeze behind me and move on to more positive things... like the palms growing again (but not so much the removal of a couple hundred burnt fronds about a month from now). Has anyone had success with the Miracle Grow "Shake & Feed for Palms"? If there's something better and just as convenient, I'd like to know. Because of the part sandy/part black "dug out of the bottom of the lagoon" soil in my yard (very weird), a lot of my palms are suffering from potassium deficiency as well as the need for heavy fertlization, so that's a big consideration. Thanks!

I don't know if this has been stated yet in any of the (numerous) cold damage reports or not -- it seems that this cold event really reinforced the fact that the cold tolerance of a particular palm species cannot be determined by temperature alone (and this comes from someone who is "always asking" in the hopes that the cool/unusual palms I want to grow will make it in my yard). You just can't determine how such a long cold spell (with very little warm-up during the days) will impact a palm as compared to a typical freeze event here (one or two nights and then temps in the 70's a couple days later). Although, since I planted a lot of stuff this past summer and was REA…

Hello, I don't often post but I need some advice - how hardy are Ravenea rivularis? I have two, both in pots but one is out growing its pot. Either I repot it or put in into the garden. They are both out doors. I'm in Melbourne, Australia.

Mauritia flexuosa
by Peter Pacific- 23 replies

The Mauritia seeds were planted last year and started growing like a rocket. Then I started to notice one with yellowing leaves so I moved it to the shadehouse, even though I thought these palms liked the sun as long as they received plenty of water. It has since declined and now I noticed two others in another pot with the same problem. The get watered everyday and get fertilized periodically. I have not dug them up to see what's happening with the roots. Can anybody help me? Thanks, Peter

While reading a post of Ken Johnsons wanting to see "storm movies" I thought I might give it a try. I should have filmed earlier with more light, but oops! And the storm is coming. Lets see how this works.... From my deck looking south, then west. 2nd try. 3rd try.

Adult Ravenea Glauca
by BeerPlant- 7 replies

I figured I would start with a new thread on this. I was contemplating planting my porch R. Rivularis but now think that R. Glauca may be the better option for my zone which is in West Central FL just east of Tampa. Can any one show me their adult plantings and also can you comment on its hardiness? How low of a temp can it take? We really got hammered lately as our marginal palms all took a tough beating even with heat lamps. Even my D. Decaryi is now showing stress. Thanks, Bill

We need to exhibit some patience right now. There are no guarantees based on appearances. Some palms will recover, some will not. But there are a few rules that have served me (and plenty of others) well over the yrs. For heavily damaged (defoliated palms): if it is a crownshaft species (Adonidia, Wodyetia, Archontophoenix, etc.) I go right to the copper treatment, don't wait but a few days. These palms are notorious for harboring bacteria in their buds which often results in the collapsing of the meristem as the weather warms up. Sometimes these palms will suffer little to no foliage damage yet the bud will rot anyway. Always follow the label but generally speaking y…

This has been one tough January. Palms, bamboo, orchids and bromeliads (mostly under canopy) that were completely undamaged by the last two winters' 27-degree lows were heavily damaged this time. We had almost two weeks of cold, with most nights being subfreezing with frost. The afternoon of 1/9, temps stayed in the 30's, with light sleet, and by midnight it was 26.5, with a low of 24 or 25 degrees in the early morning. My A. phalerata surprised me with how well it did with no protection (and no canopy.) I can't find any damage at all. Here it is, shortly after planting (probably June) and the other was taken yesterday (10 days after the lowest temp.)

A friend of a friend snapped this image in Dana Point. The quality isn't that great but I figured it was palmy enough to share here. I hope everyone in CA is starting to dry out a bit. We have received about 8" and counting here in the foothills behind Carpinteria.

Brazil biennial
by Peter Pacific- 3 replies

For various reasons I will not be going to the biennial with you guys and I am really depressed about that (not to mention I'm turning 50...damn!). Aside from the full occupancy, and a partner who doesn't have much interest, another reason was the passport issue and mine expires in March...when I went to the embassy in Guatemala City they told me my valid passport can be no newer than six months (I thought it was three). I am still planning a trip to Rio to see a couple of the same sights you will but I wanted to be part of the group. Bueno, that being said, I can't cry, but, what I can do is ask that you take tons of pictures. This trip will be an outs…

Palmate vs. pinnate
by palmmermaid- 16 replies
- 6.6k views
Last weekend I was helping teach a naturalist class and someone asked if all palms really want to be pinnate instead of palmate. We were looking at young Sabal palmettos that have costapalmate leaves which eventually turn into palmate leaves. Any thoughts or scientific evidence of this? Are the older species palmate and the younger species pinnate?

cold damage compared;Caryota maxima,ochlandra, "Himalyan"
by Eric in Orlando- 7 replies
- 1.2k views
Here are some photos comparing cold damage on 3 species of Caryota; Caryota ochlandra, this palm is nearly 50ft tall and just started flowering. Its above tree canopy so got the brunt of the cold, no damage at all !!! , you can see the papayas in the foreground were defoliated and Clusia nipped at the tips Caryota sp. "Himalayan", this palm is about 30ft tall and recieved some light damage. Those are dead leaves on the bottom that it has held onto for over a year, the bush palm to the right is C. rumphiana x mitis, with some burn. Caryota maxima, this is the tender form, it has always been the most tender Caryota here. It is about 10ft ta…
