Why do I care?

Carpentaria is not a common tree here in Sarasota. There was one very nice looking one, about 25 foot tall, towering over a little community on my way to drive my daughter to school. Had no noticeable damage following the cold weather. Didn't see it this morning on the way there, then on the way back was definitely gone. I drove into the street and there it was laying on the driveway, cut down into little pieces. Maybe they had a good reason, maybe it was diseased. All I know is it wasn't my tree and I still care. If I saw someone there I'd probably ask - "Why did you do it?" Please tell me - am I crazy?

Here are my palms! I think most of them will recover. The ones that look like they won't recover are the Archontophoenix tuckeri and cunninghaminana 'illawara', and perhaps the Arenga pinnata. All of the palms were fine until Sunday night. The next day they were all toast :'( It was so cold here that retention ponds were frozen over, fountains had piles of ice a few feet tall, and some of the ice stayed for over a week! Last year, there was no damage on most of the palms at 29.7 F. The only ones with a little damage were the Arenga pinnata, Ravenea rivularis, Hyophorbe verschaffeltia, and Wodyetia, Caryota, and Chamaedorea plumosa. The only palm that died was Dypsis psa…

Occasional freeze vs. occasional hurricane
by sarasota alex- 10 replies

Recently came across this Spring 05 Newsletter from MBC. http://www.montgomerybotanical.org/media/N...g06_newsltr.pdf On page 3 it says that Katrina/Wilma combined killed 3.2% of all palms and damaged 39.4% (almost 2 out of 5). It was also implied that Andrew was even more destructive. I haven't been through a hurricane since I began collecting palms, but have recently been through a couple of sub-freezing nights. To someone who's been through both, which one would you say is more devastating to a palm grower in Florida?

My B.m. started a nice green straight from the nursery greenhouse. It's been in the ground for a couple of years and now is a sad yellow. Is this a defiency of nitrogen, iron or something else?

Wodyetia seed germination
by Dewayne in Ticolandia- 2 replies

In Costa Rica foxtail seeds germinate rather well at sea level, but slowly and poorly at 900 m. above sea level. I see that Rosebud Farms recommend germinating Wodyetia seeds on benches heated to 30 degrees C. With oil palm we break dormancy by heating moisture adjusted seed at 38 degrees for about 40-50 days. When the moisture level is raised the seed germinates in a flush in about 10 days. Heat treated seed can be shipped around the world and easily germinated by the client. I wonder if Rosebud Farms or some other dealer of Wodyetia would be interested in determining the pre-heat requirements for this species.

Cape Coral ,FL Freeze Report
by pg6922- 9 replies

Howdy Yall, In the almost 8yrs I have lived here, this is by far the coldest it has been. In my yard it was below 32 degrees F for 2 nights in a row. 30.2 degrees F at 8:45am was my lowest recorded temps. I had frost on my windshield and ice in buckets of water and puddles. It was so cold during the week prior I didnt even bother to cover anything. Sooo, the results in my yard were not as bad I thought. The Veitchia and the Pritchardia Pacifica got hit the worst but most everything else just a little damage. Its amazing how the Veitchia got hit so hard but the King Palm right next to it was unscathed. Although in North Fort Myers, I saw large mature Coconuts…

Here are some images in my garden after the recent arctic blast that dropped temps to as low as 15.8°F in my central city Dallas location. We have recently had mild weather with one day last week at 65°F. I've tried to include images during the freeze and the ones I took today for comparison. More damage may continue in the weeks to come. during the freeze This is the aftermath... not too bad for C. microspadix B.armata and C.humilis Today after the cold

Trachycarpus princeps growth performance.
by garrytsen- 6 replies
- 3.4k views
A friend raised me a very interesting question that some Trachycarpus princeps have small ,broad and stiff leaves whereas others have soft, slim and long ones. I think there are a dozen of factors affecting the growth performance of T.princeps. 1. Nutrition. more nutrition T.princeps is fed with , the broader its leaves are.Nutrition makes a big difference in this respect. The seedling I grow separately in a pot has broader leaves than the ones growing in the same pot altogether. Very interesting different look T.princeps demonstrate under different conditions. It is noticed that some seedlings are bluish with little white stuff even on the upper side whereas others have…
